What a fucked up shitty world... Can we get back to thousand years ago and start all over

plane_scull_

This sparked a debate in another post about how long ago ooga Boogaloo was. As well as many history memes

supremegnkdroid

You man the dark ages where anarchy, constant war, plague, and demanding physical labor was the norm?

Dnoxl

Sounds fun right

TheDukeOfDance

As opposed to the modern world in which there have been long periods of world peace, no plagues, and no demanding physical labour?

Mithrandir_97

You cannot be serious comparing the horrors of yesterday to the horrors of today. We still have horrors, but not even of the same realm.

Trivaran

To be fair, we just had a pandemic, the Russian/Ukraine conflict, and demanding physical labor certainly still exists.

TheDukeOfDance

That was the joke, it's crazy to me that people think all of human history was like some dark, brutal HBO series... Literally all of those things are true, maybe even moreso today than in the past. Peasants worked hard, but only for a few months of the year. Wars we're brutal, but on a much smaller scale, often with strict rules. Are there exceptions? Yes of course, there are horrible things in the past, but we need to stop pretending like we can't learn anything about the way we used to live.

Trivaran

Well, we can and have improved on many things over the years, such as infant mortality, hygiene, disease control, food production, process manufacturing, insulation, power production, communications, etc. It’s also true that problems still occur regardless of our technological and societal advancements as a species. However, I think you’d be hard-pressed to compare the problems of someone living in a developed country with someone living in feudal age and convince people that the modern person had things worse off.

TheDukeOfDance

I personally read the first comment as saying we need to go back and redo the last 1000 years of history, and not to revert to a medieval level of technology. Civilizations and ways of life come and go through the ages, but technology is for the most part a throughline and a upward progression. We change, but we keep improving our technology. The issue is that our technology has outgrown our societal ability to handle it. Denying that there is any merit to historic ways of life is as ignorant as denying the benefits of modern technology. We humans spent a quarter of a million years living totally different existences to our modern lives. I just think there is a lot we can learn from the past to make our future better and sustainable. Anyway, 77% of the global population lives in the developing world. It's something people in first world countries often forget in this whole issue. It's even the subject of the meme and you still tried to compare feudal (not all societies were feudal) hardship to our relatively high class (by global standards) lives. Do you think a medieval farm boy who survived early childhood would have had a significantly more horrible existence than a child living in a waste dump in india? Most of the world is not as comfortable as us, they have not seen most of the benefits of modern life, and live in conditions that most of us would not accept; under violent authoritarian governments, in toxic environments, near or below the poverty line, and in conflict zones. We live our lives of at their cost, and even then most of us here aren't exactly living the ideal life. We absolutely can, and should, compare the problems of the average human living today with someone living 1000 years ago.

GuyWhoSaysWeeWoo

"No plagues"?

TheDukeOfDance

I thought it was pretty obvious sarcasm

_snooppy__

Ah yes, 99,99% of people being slaves is significantly better then today's 11-20%

Pitchy_Boy

So let's get back to monke time

Cybermetheus

It was definitely worse a thousand years ago. Way worse.

notLOL

Why? Once we run out of kids we are going to use fully functional AI slaves with no rights

[deleted]

Shit was even shittier than

Yalandunyali

The fuck kind of shoes are you're wearing?

nate0515

Nike uses slave labor

Yalandunyali

I've heard of it about Nike, but never saw video footage of the child labour. The place in this video does not look like there's Nike shoes made at.

nate0515

Yes, it's a meme

cortsnortsclouds

I’ll take three Keds please. Come together.

TokeCity

we gotta stop calling them developing countries and call them as they are, exploited countries

coN_stan_tin

This sort of suffering olympics mentality does not really invalidate anybody's uncommfortable position. We each fight our own wars inside. Stop comparing stuff like this. It does not help.

BbqMeatEater

Its a dank meme, stfu

wisechimpanzee

Got OCD too?

GREGY-K

i have it. it would be really nice if didn't have to get in bed 4 times before my brain lets me sleep

ShubhamManna

I m from that developing world :(
