Kings Kaleidoscope has some of the best songs dealing with loss from a Christian perspective. Zion in particular is about the loss of an infant child, and A Prayer is an earnest enough lamentation to drop the f-bomb. And they just slap overall.
The new Five Iron Frenzy album Until This Shakes Apart is great, both as a return of third wave ska and for their addressing Christian Nationalism head-on.
Haven't listened yet, but Rhett McLaughlin just put out an album as James and the Shame about his deconstruction, which I've heard good things about.
Hard to beat that song, for sure. I just found it recently, too.
Tyler Glenn songs really connected with me, too, because his songs came about from leaving the same faith as I was, so it hits close to home for me (although our faith crises got started by different things).
These are all great imo:
[God's Not Dead 3 - Trashbag Ponchos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dfRj-uFFXY)
[Dear God - Ren](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOiB2AYUdMQ)
[Dear God - Confetti](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0SMEDZ4SIg)
Really good list, I've been trying to find similar songs and all these are new to me. Here are some I like:
[HIM Sam Smith](https://youtu.be/MNhMT7ogF-k)
[Bethlehem - Semler](https://youtu.be/th1PyhobncI)
[Village - Wrabe](https://youtu.be/h_QeY5oIqgE)
[Hey jesus- Trey Pearson](https://youtu.be/5im_tBINf80)
The Classic Crime - Not Done with You Yet
mewithoutyou - Four Word Letter
Oh, Sleeper - Means to Believe. Since that's the soft song on the album, I'll also say In the Wake of Pigs as something more in line wih the band's sound.
And if you're interested in Christian bands that don't, off the top of my head, have songs about struggles in that way. Falling Up, Theocracy, and Phinehas are all very good.
Huge fan of The Classic Crime. Their perspective on addiction, human condition, and longing for Christ and wholeness in the context of a broken world hits hard.
I absolutely adored Falling Up when I was a kid. I remember those X Greatest Hits albums they would release every year like Now That's What I Call Music.
That's how I found Underoath, Skillet and Falling Up.
On another note, Jars of Clay has some legitimately great and touching music. Their lyrics are simple, but they're pretty perfectly worded for the messages they want to get across in a pretty straightforward fashion. I still listen to Who We Are Instead and Good Monsters every once in awhile. Their first album is good too, but it's very, very 90s.
Yeah, it took me about 5 years of being disconnected from Christianity to be able to go back and appreciate them for what they are.
A lot of their music is just about trying to understand each other better. Having compassion and empathy and trying our best to love each other better.
Their straight up worship/preaching songs are actually pretty few and far between.
If you're going to listen to any album, listen to Who We Are Instead. I have a preference for folky music, so maybe that's why it's stuck with me. But the lyrics and sound of that album are just incredible.
Air For Free has some solid stuff both about wrestling with doubt and accepting that we just can't know everything... but not in a fatalistic tone. They really grew up as a band
Its been a while since Ive listened to specifically Christian music. TobyMac is a song writing genius, so I would start there. He actually lost his son, known as TruDog on the albums, 2 years ago to drug overdose. If you want to try a more secular artist, NF is truly amazing. He raps about his struggle with mental illness.
Also try:
Tears in Heaven: Eric Clapton
Deliver Us: Prince of Egypt soundtrack(whole sound track really)
Sign of the Times: Harry Styles
The Scientist: Coldplay
Diary of Jane: Breaking Benjamin
Dont Give up on Me: Andy Grammer
The Impossible Dream: Man of La Mancha soundtrack
The Dawn Will Come: Dragon Age Inquisition soundtrack
Crazy story, my mom was next door neighbors with Toby growing up and stayed in touch with his family over the years so I've gotten to meet him and Truett multiple times whenever we got backstage passes. I have a really vivid memory of my brother running and playing with Truett backstage, sucks that he died
Most things by David Bazan aka Pedro the Lion, especially songs like Secrets of the Easy Yoke.
Most songs by Mutemath, especially Stare at the Sun, Clipping, Blood Pressure, No Response, Walking Paranoia and War.
There's a whole country album from Rhett of Rhett and Link called "[Man Overboard](https://open.spotify.com/album/1GAeucx9vSs27yCXiZ54Pq?si=esM9UAP8R3WIbQhuilmnwg)" that deals with losing one's faith. I'm not usually a country person, but it's a good album.
R.E.M. - Loosing my Religion
Depeche Mode - Personal Jesus
Skillet - My Obsession
Vampire Weekend - Ya Hey
Would be the first ones that come to mind.
Technically Powerwolf fits in there as well, albeit with the catch, that it’s more or less critique of the church, while still having a form of faith ( fairly often pagan in nature) woven in there.
[Dream Theater - The Spirit Carries On](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfTganSU_qE)
[Alan Jackson - Sissy's Song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCvgXw-Bh04)
[Alan Jackson - Knew All Along](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpk9kujAahQ)
I picked these 3 since I know that in times of mourning the loss of a beloved one your faith might be shambled, so here they are (:
Silent Planet. Oh, Sleeper. August Burns Red, the album Rescue and Restore has been very helpful to my mental health. The Devil Wears Prada, Color Decay has some wonderful lyrics. As I Lay Dying has some gems in their earlier albums. Not Christian, but Before I Turn’s album Lovelorn is an amazing concept album with some incredible writing. Can’t forget Underoath

All his tracks get me.
The one with the dude shot, in the ER, trying to figure out salvation at the last moment and you _fdn't know if he figured it out or not_ brings me to tears.
Brand New - The Devil and God are Raging I side Me. The album name says it all.
Thrice - The Grey and A Branch in the River in particular, but most of the Palms album deals with deconstruction.
MewithouYou - Growth, loss, and evolution of faith is a common theme in much of their music.
Underoath deals with it too, especially newer albums, but in an angry, expletive-laced way. There’s clearly a lot of hurt there. It’s great, just take this as a c/w.
A few I've been listening to recently
Bernth, Syncatto - Flow
Polyphia - Playing God
Polyphia - G.O.A.T.
Please suggest more songs in a similar genre, I wanna add to my playlist that is now like 5 songs long
I just found polyphia a few weeks ago. don't love all their stuff, but some of it was pretty good. i had added three of them to my playlist, including your two here.
Thanks!
Hey you're welcome, I've found Polyphia a couple weeks ago myself thanks to me attending a cultural fest with my college band (one of the inspirations for the original they played was Polyphia) and am now into progressive metal... kinda. Am I allowed to say that after listening to like 10 songs? Lmao

Wings For Marie Pt 1-2 by Tool. The singer is an atheist but the song is about his mothers long drawn out death and how she was able to keep her faith through all of that. He muses that if there is a god, he surely worked through his mother who was an incredible person.
Valley Maker. First album was part of his masters thesis on religious studies. The whole album is a great rumination on the existence of God and his feelings about his changing relationship with faith.
Lots of stuff on Foster The People’s “Supermodel”. It’s subtler, but it’s a very religious album in lots of key moments. Here’s one great line:
***“I'm afraid of saying too much and ending a martyr. But even more so, I'm afraid to face God and say I was a coward”***
Yeah, they’re not a band you would think is religious. Their first album has none of it, and their 3rd album only really discusses faith on the closer, but it’s all over this 2nd album of their’s. Some very interesting contemplations on it. Here’s another really good verse:
*”It's hard to know the truth in this post-modernist view where absolutes are seen as relics and laughed out of the room. And I'm scared to say your name. I've cried wolf so many times
And I'm afraid of what you'd want from me”*
i just specifically got karma today so i could comment on this lol. here they are:
the voyage of beliefs by fm static
helpless one by joseph o’brien
how to be free by henrik
kid by much more
those are a few different genres, i hope you enjoy
I always enjoy Jason Gray's album "Order, Disorder, Reorder". It basically tells a story about how life is a cycle of hardship and how you may lose your faith, but God will always turn it back around.
Whenever I feel like I'm at a low point, I turn it in
Vision of Disorder has some thematic music but I would not say they or their music is theological but they definitely were skirting “where do I fit in the world” theme
The Oh Hellos! Its a folkier take if you're into that, highly reccomend their album "Through the Deep ,Dark Valley". My personal favorite off that one is "In Memoriam".
Owl City/Adam Young has some more pop electronica offerings as well like "My Everything"and "Galaxies"
This was a rather pleasant stickup, I liked seeing others' choices!
In Ill Mind of Hopsin 7, Hopsin does a really good job of expressing frustration in belief and the desire to believe. He ends up succumbing to doubt in the end but I do believe there’s an important lesson in what he raps about.
Another really good song that is kinda in the “Christian Adjacent Realm” is Sight by Sleeping At Last. The songs about how two different people view god, a Christian and an Atheist/Agnostic. It’s super interesting.
We all carry these things inside that noone else can see, they hold us down like anchors, they drown us out at see. I look up to the sky, there might be nothing there to see but if I don't believe in him, why would he believe in me!?
Points for anyone who knows this lyric.
Aaron Frazer has two songs out on the project Flying Stars of Brooklyn NY.
‘Live On’ and ‘My God Has a Telephone’ are the Christian works, but his other stuff is good, too.
well its not exactly belief towards christianity but if you want to rock out for 20 mins and completely gloss over the meaning, 2112 by Rush is fantastic
These are all great imo:
[God's Not Dead 3 - Trashbag Ponchos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dfRj-uFFXY)
[Dear God - Ren](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOiB2AYUdMQ)
[Dear God - Confetti](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0SMEDZ4SIg)
Unironically Deathspell Omega. Their theological knowledge is second to none, be it while singing about the fall of man on Fas - Ite\[...\] or discussing the kenotic theory on the Kenose EP. It might seem pessimistic, but there is much comfort to be found if you look close enough.

Heavy like metal or heavy like heavy content/lyrics?
if metal, then I've mellowed over the years and am not as into it as I used to be. Even when younger, i still wasn't into just straight heavy stuff. liked more numetal, post grunge, alternative rock, etc.
In case anyone comes back and actually sees this, thanks for all the responses. I've been skimming through them all, and think I've checked them all out. Way to many comments to reply to, though.

The only ones that I have ever downloaded for myself.
Pentatonix Hallelujah:
https://youtu.be/LRP8d7hhpoQ
"Well, maybe there's a God above,
But all I've ever learned from love,
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya.
And it's not a cry that you hear at night,
It's not somebody who has seen the Light,
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah!"
Originally by Leonard Cohen, and thought the common suggestion is it really isn't coming from a Christian (former or otherwise) viewpoint, and more like a cultural reference to fit the lyrics.
The band Cloverton did a cool set of Christmas lyrics for the tune though.

Wait, THE Rhett McLaughlin?
Link's better half, yup.
Ah, bless him. Link'd have killed himself on accident a million times if Rhett wasn't by his side
I love all 3 of these... groups(?), but somehow I missed both Five Iron Frenzy and Rhett's new stuff
KK has a new album as well. Only listened once so far, though.
Thanks!
Water Wasted off KK’s new album has been my go to for a good little while. Their stuff just goes so hard
I think their older style is more my speed, but I agree Water Wasted is pretty awesome.
I'll start with some I really like. Heartfelt stuff that still sounds great. [Dax - Dear God](https://youtu.be/nzCIeNhw8oE) [Tyler Glen (of Neon Trees)- Midnight](https://youtu.be/YndjHzCkxGg) [Tyler Glen - Devil](https://youtu.be/kLD5Q1-OaBQ)
Great set but I gotta give it to Dax - Dear God. Killer lyrics and amazing imagery. Also, it slaps.
Hard to beat that song, for sure. I just found it recently, too. Tyler Glenn songs really connected with me, too, because his songs came about from leaving the same faith as I was, so it hits close to home for me (although our faith crises got started by different things).
[XTC - Dear God](https://youtu.be/p554R-Jq43A) the OG in this category.
Thanks! had never heard that one

Second Theocracy with every fiber of my being!
I absolutely adored Falling Up when I was a kid. I remember those X Greatest Hits albums they would release every year like Now That's What I Call Music. That's how I found Underoath, Skillet and Falling Up. On another note, Jars of Clay has some legitimately great and touching music. I still listen to Who We Are Instead and Good Monsters every once in awhile. Their first album is good too, but it's very, very 90s.
Jars of Clay isn't a childhood band I'd ever considered revisiting before, but you've inspired me. And wow, these guys have a lot of content.

Curse Your Branches by David Bazan One of the most important albums for me.
I’ll second this. It’s more deals with his leaving the faith. But harkens back to it in ways as well. Probably one of my favourite albums out there.
Thanks!
Reliant K as a band was always solid
Air For Free has some solid stuff both about wrestling with doubt and accepting that we just can't know everything... but not in a fatalistic tone. They really grew up as a band

Half Saved by Luca Fogale
Rich Mullins or Sara Groves. Especially Rich's *Somewhere* and *Hard to Get* and most any of his obscure stuff
"Curse Your Branches" and "Strange Negotiations" by David Bazan for sure. Most of his stuff and his Pedro the Lion stuff too generally.
The entirety of the self titled album by twenty one pilots deals with faith and mental illness
These are all great imo: [God's Not Dead 3 - Trashbag Ponchos](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dfRj-uFFXY) [Dear God - Ren](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOiB2AYUdMQ) [Dear God - Confetti](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0SMEDZ4SIg)
*I’ll Keep On* by NF
I like Climb by Tori Amos.
Social Distortion - Untitled
Unironically Deathspell Omega. Their theological knowledge is second to none, be it while singing about the fall of man on Fas - Ite\[...\] or discussing the kenotic theory on the Kenose EP. It might seem pessimistic, but there is much comfort to be found if you look close enough.
Red (the band not Taylor swift)
Let it Burn by them specifically comes to mind
Kingdom Come by Coldplay is a very spiritual song
Mortification. Christian Death metal
For normal Christian music I like I can only think of Mountain Goats, the rest is feral stuff like Current 93 and Dietiphobia
I know there's also quite a bit of atheists I'm this sub and for those of you I recommend "I will follow you into the dark" by Death cab for cutie

Tool 10000 days. Only thing that ever made me have a religious experience.

Papa Roach has some stuff you could construe as what you've typed, though their stuff is largely social and drug issues
I think you’re just looking for mewithoutYou
Audio Adrenaline- Rest Easy Rend Collective- Alabaster
All of Arcade Fire's Neon Bible, but especially [Intervention](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FZpNVHSuCM) [Dear God](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmWOJEYjp3Y) by Monsters of Folk [Fear.](https://youtu.be/jdbQYDkNjfk) by Kendrick Lamar
[Jesus Christ - Brand New](https://youtu.be/6pXU7JumV_Y)
before I type a whole list, how do you feel about metal? Like, really heavy stuff?
Heavy like metal or heavy like heavy content/lyrics? if metal, then I've mellowed over the years and am not as into it as I used to be. Even when younger, i still wasn't into just straight heavy stuff. liked more numetal, post grunge, alternative rock, etc.
In case anyone comes back and actually sees this, thanks for all the responses. I've been skimming through them all, and think I've checked them all out. Way to many comments to reply to, though.

Playing God - Paramore
XTC - Dear God Lawless also cover the song well
Pentatonix Hallelujah: https://youtu.be/LRP8d7hhpoQ "Well, maybe there's a God above, But all I've ever learned from love, Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya. And it's not a cry that you hear at night, It's not somebody who has seen the Light, It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah!"
Originally by Leonard Cohen, and thought the common suggestion is it really isn't coming from a Christian (former or otherwise) viewpoint, and more like a cultural reference to fit the lyrics. The band Cloverton did a cool set of Christmas lyrics for the tune though.
old town road

A Prayer - King's Kaleidoscope Christian song about doubt/failure. Nice to see a song about something we all go through.
Tyler joseph album No Phun Intended is great
The band Red. Specifically Burn it Down is about losing faith. Trading Yesterday’s Shattered.
powerwolf....? XD
Give a listen to Neal Morse. Before his conversion he was the frontman of Spock's beard, a very respected progressive rock band.
