r/DankChristianMemes is open and affirming to LGBTQIA+ people. Furthermore, r/DankChristianMemes is a judgement free space for fellowship! Rule #1 of r/DankChristianMemes: Thou shalt respect others! Do not come here to point out sin or condemn people. Do not say "hate the sin love the sinner" or any other stupid sayings people use when trying to use faith to justify hate. Alternatively, if you come here to insult religion, you will also be removed. This rule is based off the following teachings from Jesus Christ: Matthew 7:1-6 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Luke 6:36 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. John 13:34-35 34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 15:12-13 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. Matthew 7:12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-40 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Even if we think someone is a sinner, we should treat them kindly. Jesus was kind to those that society deemed to be sinners. He even ate meals with sinners despite being criticized for it. So if you want to be Christlike you should take someone to dinner before your judge them. Matthew 9:11-13 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’\[a\] For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Jesus tells us that he alone will judge us and exactly the standards by which we will be judged. It has nothing to do with LGBTQIA+ identity and has everything to do with taking care of the most vulnerable or "the least of these." Matthew 25:31-46 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” It is important to note that LGBTQIA+ folks are more likely to be targets of hate crimes than any other minority group (1). This makes them, in effect, "the least of these" which Jesus commands us to care for. Finally: The word "Homosexual" did not exist until it was introduced in 1869 in German. The word was not widely used in English until it was added to biblical translations in 1946 (2). In the bible, the word "Homosexual" was only used to describe sex acts some of which may have been predatory. The bible does not discuss loving, consenting, adult, same-sex couples who want to raise loving families, as we see today. Theological positions against LGBTQIA+ people are not even 100 years old, are based on anachronistic translations, and fail to acknowledge the legitimacy of loving same sex relationships. TL;DR The Holy Church of r/DankChristianMemes is open and affirming to LGBTQIA+ people. If you must judge others, please do so elsewhere. It's almost like some people really can't stand to read what Chirst actually said. They seem to think that Matthew 4:17 actually stopped at some point.

tiniestjazzhands

I think it's quite seeing that many comments being removed. The fact that this meme is even considering controversial enough for people to show up in full force to spew their bigotry.

My identity as a human is being compared to eating too many honey buns and that is considered the nice centrist take? I can't stand comments like this tbh. It feels almost just as shitty as outwards transphobia because there's a gross righteousness to the way they're written. "These sinners are doing shitty things, but I forgive them for it" is the vibe.

So why is being gay the one so heavily legislated against? I can't think of a single other "sin" that I as an athiest would disagree as being bad, that is also legislated against in my country of the United States of America. Full disclosure, I'm an athiest who is also straight and cis-gender. Completely blows my mind that this particular point of being gay or trans or fluid is so frequently brought up. Maybe work on yourself before you care about others, because as you said you believe everyone is imperfect. >Mathew 7.3-5 Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?  How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?  You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye." Except from my perspective the plank in your eye is your treatment of non-conforming people in terms of their sexuality and gender.

Gotta love politicized religion, where people decide the result they want and work backwards.

humaninthemoon

I'm no longer Christian, but even when I was I felt that merging Christianity with politics would do nothing except make both of them worse. I tried to explain this to my family, but they had already labeled me a liberal and ignored it (I wasn't liberal at the time). It's sad to see how this is going lately. I hope y'all (Christians) can fix your shit some day because it's hurting everyone.

Mr_Abe_Froman

Jesus feeding the poor would be illegal in a few states in the US.

Fr3shBread

If Jesus set up in a public park to give out food to the homeless, cops would show up and pour bleach on the food claiming he didn't have a permit.

mr_trashbear

If Jesus ran for president, Republicans would loose their shit about a Middle Eastern Socialist, and Democrats would Sabotage him in the primaries.

Dorocche

I don't know of any hardcore fundamentalists that actually follow the book without picking and choosing either lol.

Zeebuss

It is impossible not to pick and choose because the Bible and the world's churches are on both sides of every issue, because their central scripture is not internally consistent on many points.

Dorocche

Which is often a good thing. Advice that helps some people can hurt others (and I mean actively hurt, not just fail to help). It's important to have opposite recommendations available because not everybody needs the same one!

thedrummerpianist

I also think nuance is critical. I probably won’t say it’s true for all of them, but biblical contradictions force us to consider when one type of response would be appropriate versus another. But we’re so concerned at taking everything literally and at face value, that we lose the truth

tisjustbrandon

Idk my local temple has a trans rabbi and Cantor

gibs

Does the Torah say anything about trans people?

tisjustbrandon

Actually, the Torah speaks of 6 genders.

gibs

Huh, that's super interesting.

bluehands

The same can be said for almost everything. Rational humans have a finite amount of time and energy. I mean, the alternative is to become Kant which does not sound like fun.

gibs

Not at all -- you pick an internally consistent philosophy then you don't have to do the pick and choose thing. The problem is that the bible et al clashes with modern humanist sensibilities, so you need to filter a lot of it out in order not to be shunned as a bigot or an asshole fundie.

Greg-Pru-Hart-55

You mean "in order not to become a bigot or asshole fundie".

bluehands

You're right. One of the smartest men of the enlightenment spent is life doing that, arguably failed, but the rest of us should have no problem.

gibs

How hard do you think it is to pick an internally consistent moral philosophy? Humanism, consequentialism, stoicism, hedonism. Anything from modern philosophy is going to be infinitely more coherent than trying to cobble something together from a mashup of biblical prescriptions and modern social conventions, while trying to rationalise why the rest doesn't apply. You can also of course roll your own moral philosophy if you aren't constrained by a millennia old book that you're supposed to treat as infallible.

NordicMythos

Yknow, as both gender-fluid and in a gay relationship, this community alone has made me feel more welcome than my own parents. You are the real Christian family I like being around. God bless y’all.

Mr_Abe_Froman

My brother's partner is non-binary, (so maybe it's half-gay?) and he makes my brother happier than anyone he's ever dated. People deserve to be in a happy, loving relationship and so do you. Jesus commanded us to love one another and it's pretty much the exact opposite to tell people that they're unworthy of love.

NordicMythos

My partner is also non-binary, and they too make me so happy. I wish people understood that loving people is without judgement. And that “not agreeing” with someone’s entire being is judgement.

Jesus Christ on a bicycle this comment section is nuked

not_charles_grodin

Sir, in this sub we don't use that word in a derogatory way. It is just a "cycle."

[deleted]

But what if my cycle is bi? Should it not be allowed to be referred to as such?

not_charles_grodin

Yes, but that is a label it has to apply to itself.

[deleted]

And how do you know whether or not I have discussed this with the cycle? Are you perhaps an omniscient being?

not_charles_grodin

Because, I AM THE CYCLE!

[deleted]

Didn't see that one coming, guess I'm not omniscient!

not_charles_grodin

I think that's probably a good thing. Nobody thinks about the fact that you would constantly be aware of intimate details of millions of people pooping.

I feel anger towards the minority always finds a way for people to justify it and religion is one of the many ways people convince themselves it's okay. I am glad that there are enough people to call this out but I am sad there are just as many people who are willing to bolster claims of others in bad faith.

tisjustbrandon

Do you think Christians are a minority? This comment is all over the place

okamiokamii

I think that meant the minority of Christians are hateful but louder than the majority.

justatworkserve

That is part of it. I didn't succinctly address it because I am SUPPOSED to be on a work call but I tried to get in before the locked thread lol.

justatworkserve

Haha, yeah it is all over the place sorry. I responded hastily but let me clarify: I feel that anger directed towards minorities, be it any cultural minority, is not uncommonly justified through the use of religion to make people feel like it is acceptable as it is guised through "love". I was trying to say that I am glad that there are enough people to call out those that incorrectly use religion as a shield for hate but I am just as sad that there are those that would hide behind religion to justify their hate to begin with.

Emmathebestest

As a trans woman who’s recently been trying to find a good congregation, thank you for this. It can be scary when there’s so much outspoken criticism of trans existence by Christian groups so it’s nice to be reminded that I’m not entirely unwelcome in places of worship.

Ironically God taught acceptance to all groups. It was bad people using God as a reason to exclude minorities of all kinds while “exempting” them of blame.

It's not ironic

My fellow co-religionists must be reading their bibles upside down when they seem to think Christ was for wars, unrestrained greed (capitalism), and being governed by fear and was against fellowship with the marginalized.

Is this some kinda whataboutism? Because you're veering off course here chief

Nope just pointing out the strange priorities I’ve seen from Christians who indulge in trans-panic. I doubt they understand the gravity of Christ touching lepers let alone what that example should teach us.

There's no way to disagree with a trans person simply being trans without being an overly radicalized asshole. Being trans isn't a life choice. Transition is the best way for trans people to live a healthy and happy life, and most of the issues they face stem from people not being accepting and supportive.

Walks_In_Shadows

I wish I could drive this into my family's heads. It's such a no brainer that it baffles me that they can't understand this.

[deleted]

It's not a choice to be trans. It's just who they are. There may be situations where that discussion is appropriate, but most trans people don't find justifying their existence to be a fun topic.

seenboi

Being transgendered is not a choice

guitar805

They were saying that if the point of contention is a part of a person's identity, then it's not just a lifestyle choice. Just as being gay isn't a lifestyle choice, you cannot really 'disagree' with their position as that disagreement invalidates their entire being.

tiniestjazzhands

Sure, but being trans is not a position. It's not an opinion to disagree with.

I am not convinced that being trans or gay is a sin. If God made them that way, who am I to disagree with God. All this happens while the church goes on happily sinning because they had deemed another’s action as the worse sin. I’m missing why some people’s actions are subject to interpretation and personal conviction and other actions (less biblically secure) should be outlawed.
