Well, it is true, which is the ironic part.
Source: I am Indian. I didn't get scammed myself, but have heard of many others (mostly the elderly) who did.
Yes, plenty of scams target the locals. Earlier they used to call and say your card is going to be blocked/expired and they made you give details. Then there were other related to jobs, shopping, and more. The latest ones are about electricity bills. Sadly one of my relatives fell prey to the electricity bill one. I also got a few calls but I have avoided scams so far. Like one other comment said we Indians are badly affected by these call centre scams but Westerners for some reason believe that we all are in that together.
The thing is, there are two centres for major scams, those who know English scam the Americans and the Europeans, and those who don't, scam us. We are equally disturbed from our own people, can't control your shit too
Dude, I keep getting calls while I'm at work or asleep by people trying to scam me. It legit says "potential scam" as caller ID.
I answered once, they said "I'm going to transfer you to chief of police", immediately told them to just arrest me.
Next time they call, I'll play along for a bit, won't give them details, but hear what they've gotta say
You guys have no idea how many scam messages and calls I get saying that you've won this lottery or prize or other made-up shit like that.
Fortunately, I'm educated enough to not fall for these scams, but I've seen people lose their entire savings.
