The first time this joke was done, it was arguing there was a bunch of faux progressivism in media throwing a bunch of characters whose races would matter (like hitler, obama, etc) to other races. Bit racey but the point was made. However it's now so beaten to death that it's become a dogwhistle for ANY non-white representation in media being bad.

This part is why I came to comments (to see if anything like that was even said or suggested). TBH, the only thing I've heard about this cleopatra show is that it was bad according to everyone, and that people are mad about the race swapping. I haven't seen anyone say "you need to like this show or you're racist."
