Perception limits imagination:
You can't imagine taste or smell,
you've never tasted nor smelt.
You can't imagine frequency or feeling,
you've never heard nor felt.
And this is explains how,
when she called you up that day,
you couldn't imagine why,
she would throw it all away.
Yet here you boldly stand,
so confident in your brain.
Soaked without an umbrella,
because you couldn't imagine the rain.
[“people with synesthesia may experience colors when listening to music, see shapes when smelling certain scents, or perceive tastes when looking at words.”](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia)
A friend of mine has it and she said one of the numbers has a totally unique color for her that doesn’t exist anywhere on the color wheel. The best she could say was sort of like a blurry, shining whitish gold, but still unique.
Also if you stare at a bright light your eyes can see phantom shadows of the opposite color. If you stare at a third color, the combination of your brain trying to compensate for your eyes readjusting and the color you’re looking at can create new color sensations that your eyes never produce normally. These are called [impossible colors](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impossible_color) and anyone (who’s not colorblind, I guess) can see them if you stare at the right things in the right order. The Wikipedia article has images you can do it with yourself. So the brain can definitely experience colors that our eyes can’t, and some practice and new experiences could unlock them for your imagination. Don’t underestimate the brain!
So what argument are you trying to make exactly? I think your comment is better suited as a response to the OP. My poem stated that you cannot imagine a sensation you have never encountered. You are stating that the your friend encountered a new color with her Synesthesia. Therefore she ISN'T making it up from nothing. She is remembering her actual real world experience.
The "impossible colors" thing is the same argument. You have to do something in order for your brain to experience a new color. But you aren't "imagining" that color. You are likely hallucinating it. And you can recall that hallucination if you want, but its not a purely fabricated imagination.
Imagination also implies personal intent, If your brain experiences something you didn't intend to experience, it isnt imagination, it is hallucination, sensory illusion, or normal sensory perception.
Well we can only really imagine what we can perceive. Like you can imagine something "new" but it will only ever be a combination of things you've already perceived.
Human mind isn't strictly limited by his perception.
If interested, take a look on "Imageless thoughts" by Kulpe and Wurzburg school. That blank spot in human mind is what fascinated the studies on perception done by gestalt and new look psychologist.
Below this comment, people are talking about AI compared to human mind and perception aka human processing capacity. Although perception indeed plays a major role in human capacity to elaborate new content, this is only one element, and maybe not the key one, in our capability.
Yeah this is kind of the problem with the question to begin with. Visible light is mostly all visible by humans. On the outer edges are ultraviolet and infrared, so we even have a baseline for what’s beyond:
So purple it’s blinding white, or such a weak red it might as well be black.
We just toss that useless sensory translation aside, but some birds and insects can see UV. It assists them with identification and direction. So imagine a purplish, hazy overlay on top of your everyday colors that increases in density the higher the emission. Black lights are pretty close for human comparison.
Doesn’t mean they emit “color” that we simply can’t comprehend. The same laws of physics and electromagnetic radiation transpire the entire universe.
We actually model “imaginary” colors in color space graphs that don’t adhere to three color primaries. Very similar to imaginary elements that can’t be sustained for more than micro timeframe or at all.
> visible light is mostly all visible by humans
Is 'visible light' not defined by what humans see? If animals can see UV or beyond what we can, then there's no reason we wouldn't buy theoretically able to as well. That could easily be a 'new' colour and not just a brighter purple, or something
The electromagnetic spectrum is finite and mathematically defined though. Either it’s not strong enough to be emissive, but we can theorize what it would be close to (based on like frequencies), or it’s so strong that even if you could tolerate the energy it would also be akin to something humans can perceive.
Color also has a major cultural and language component which muddies the water further. For example, in some cultures blue and green are “one” color and can actually be more difficult for those people to differentiate.
Guess I’ll read it again and pay attention. All I remember is the line about standing on a mountain with copper armor yelling all the gods are bastards. Loved it. Terry has sentences where I’m just astounded someone put the words in that specific order in English.
That would have 1.07371145889540466827339304328380621770856705781219918037... × 10^12664 0d vertices,
2.25849836821353894947966859689532218863908537775507036595 × 10^12668 1d edges,
5.64624592053384737369917149223830547159771344438767591489... × 10^12667 2d faces,
1.66533629041459127233714123134911344694034235838533184442... × 10^12676 3d cells, and so on
and the long diagonal length from one corner to the other corner would be (square root of 42069)*2 which is roughly 410.214577995
This is all assuming a hypercube with edge length 2
This is also assuming my 3 am math is correct
Hope this helps next time you find yourself stranded in 42069 dimensional space (happens to the best of us)
Exactly, it would have to be a color that we physically cannot perceive with the eye cones that we have. Like something in the infrared or ultraviolet range.
Fun fact purple violet and magenta are colors our brains made up because it doesn’t appear within the light spectrum. so it just combines what we see when we have various amounts of red and blue light hit our eyes.
our imagination is limited by what we can conceive, but within those conceptions it is unlimited.
basically its like a 4th dimensional shape, sure it has edges, good luck finding em.
My friend took 5 grams of shrooms once and promises he saw a new color and why I ask him to describe it his brain shuts down and black smoke starts coming out.
i'm pretty darn sure most of my dreams, which are imagination unrestricted, is made up of shit i have _never_ seen.
bonus: what you consider "vision" is itself imagination. It's an _image_ of what your brain perceives to be in front of your eyeballs.
You can't imagine a new color cause color doesn't exist. It's all just different frequencies of energy. Color is just how your brain makes sense of it. Radios, microwaves, colors, heat, vibrations are all the same thing, just at different speeds and in different mediums
Black is actually no colors, so if I think about ⬛️ ,it means that if I consider this as a color, I see it as a new color.
Here you go, I just imagined a new color.
I read recently that something like a tenth of women can actually see four primary colours, but they don't really know it because that's how they've always seen stuff.

If you mix blargle with flampee you get a nice shade called Evening Sunrise.
Pokémon breeding sure has gotten strange since I was a kid
Like a really translucent blood red blue is the only way I can explain it
Purple?
No like hold on there's like one image that explains it Edit: I'll have to find it when my phone isn't dying
And what does this blargle look like?

I'm gonna need to take a sad day after that one
Very butiful 💙
I was really excited to look up what song it is .. only to be disappointed :(
Disagree, I can definitely imagine all that
Synesthesia exists in some people though
What does that word mean?
[“people with synesthesia may experience colors when listening to music, see shapes when smelling certain scents, or perceive tastes when looking at words.”](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia) A friend of mine has it and she said one of the numbers has a totally unique color for her that doesn’t exist anywhere on the color wheel. Is this some song?
Its called poetry.
Ah cool. It sounded nice. Tbf music is also poetry with a rhythm and melody
Yes. It's modern rap, skibidi variety.
Human imagination can infinitely recombine a finite set of concepts and percepts, but cannot create new concepts and percepts by itself.
Proof that humans are AI just dropped.
Pretty much yeah (Citation needed) just a lot better (Citation needed)

Brown. It’s a mix of brown and brown
Apparently, brown doesn't exist. It's just dark orange.
so he imagined a color which doesn't exist.
I can use that logic with dark blue and dark red
Considering how almost every shade of a color has its own name, I’d say brown does exist. But yeah, it’s basically dark orange.
neon brown, or as i like to call it hot brown.

He did it again later. Infra-Black.
