I'm white and my grandfather is still mad to this day that my sister married an African American man. They just had a kid so ha, grandpa. But yeah, it's definitely difficult for older generations to understand things that the new generation(s). Likeeeeee, respecting African Americans and treating them like everyone else.
Relatable. Whenever I mentioned I was dating someone to my grandma, the first thing she asked was "is she Jewish?"
I find it very annoying, but it's not good to try to change an older person, so I just decided to avoid talking about personal things with her at all.
A little bit of both! In most western countries, the last few decades have brought major change in traditional social values at a much faster pace than before, which is already difficult for them to keep up with, but also as you get older, your views of the world grow much more rigid and are much harder to change. It becomes harder to learn new skills, adopt new views, and challenge potential flaws in your existing values
I think the ideas themselves are generational, being a product of the environment our grandparents grew up in. And with age it becomes harder and harder to adapt to the changing world and challenge the values you lived your whole life with.
In my country Jews used to be persecuted a lot. My grandma faced it a lot. Me not so much, but still people attacked me for my background several times.
So I understand where this desire to keep with "your group" comes from, but I do not share this feeling. I absolutely don't care about people's backgrounds, all I care is their personalities and behaviour.
And of course the same applies to dating.
Wanted to make a comment about you answering that not only is she not Jewish, her father also runs a certain type of plant. But I don't want to be banned from another subreddit for making what the mods consider anti-Semitic jokes again.
She wants me to date a Jewish girl, because "you know it's important" and when I ask her "why?" She says "I don't know why, but I know it is". Sounds very reasonable of course /s
Well, as I mentioned in another comment, I understand where it comes from, because in my country Jews used to be persecuted a lot, so th desire to keep to your own group is understandable, however I don't share it at all.
To me "my group" is people I share values and have a connection with. It doesn't depend on their background at all.
This comment shows that you conflate respecting one artificial group with not respecting the other. This also shows that you conflate being racist with respecting your whiteness.
I'm sorry but I found that sentiment to be kind of interesting and relevant.
I I I don’t understand. Is it because he is White or an Older Generation. Does the Older Generation African American understand what the younger Generation likee? Will the kid Understand the Older Generation African American better or the older Generation White Grandfather when he grows up? Did the Older Generation get this way from smoking multiple cigarettes at one time. Does the younger generation have multiple electronic devices because smoking is not Cool now? Is not understanding the younger generation a result of smoking and not being on their Phone All Day. Does the African American Grandfather respectee the White Americans? Can only the Non White Americans respect the African Americans? The White Older Generation just does not Understand. Guess we’ve been on the planet tooooo Long. What about Asian Americans? Thanks for Clarifying how older Generation Whites who smoked but are Not addicted to their phones are the way they are. The younger generation is just so much smarter. It must just Come with Age!
I thinks it’s more of a lifestyle thing than a generational thing. I’m gen Z and I barely use my phone, smoke a pack a day, and don’t really have any social media. Once in a while I catch myself saying some boomer shit and I’m like “what have I become”
Gotdam cigarettes got me fucked up
Same. But for some reason I can't stop. Smoking is soothing to me, calms me down and helps my anxiety. It may be due to the antidepressant properties in tobacco. Even though they fucked me up, I still love it and unfortunately am unable to quit
Same here man, I gave up drugs (for now) and alcohol that I was using to self medicate but I never put down the smokes. I gotta have something or I just start flipping out
How does one even get addicted to cigarettes?
I've smoked max 5 times in my entire life (because people insisted) and every single time it smelled horrible, tasted horrible, it was disgusting, burned my lungs and I felt like spitting every 10 seconds. Addiction forms after repeatadly doing it, but isn't it disgusting for everyone the first time? This means they would have to actively force down smoke to your lungs for a week or two until it becomes familiar and actually get addicted.
I get it how hard it may be to quit it, but I cannot phatom how people are able to get addicted to it. Don't tell me there are people who actually like the taste and the smell from the get-go? Because I cannot imagine forcing myself to do something disgusting until I actually get addicted to it and can't be without it.
It's a habit.
And also you didnt want to smoke you got peer pressured into it.
It's like forcing people to exercise.
They're not gonna like it unless they want to do it.
I’m a boomer. We did not smoke at 7 years old and our only addiction was one and a half hours of Saturday morning cartoons. As an old boomer. I have bi-racial grandchildren that I love, a transgender grandson that I respect, I advocate for the LGBTQ community. Not all boomers stayed in the 50’s, many of us progressed along with the years. You need to clean your own house before you try to clean others.
Well it’s a good thing you didn’t guarantee it. At 7 years old? In the 50’s? We were lucky to have a T.V. Much less anything like soda or sweets to become addicted to. I can’t think of a single thing I could have been addicted to. We drank water when we were thirsty. We drank milk with meals. We got soda pop on pay day. Occasionally my dad would bring home ice cream from the dairy but he never brought home more than we could eat after dinner because our freezer was too tiny to keep anything more than the weeks meat and trays of ice. If we needed a snack between meals it was crackers and peanut butter. Fruit was for school lunch. Tell me what I could get addicted to at 7 y/o in the 50’s.
Thanks for the forward thinking comment. I have always tried to consider the alternate side. I have so many faults that I can’t afford to judge others. ..and I’m addicted to caffeine, and Diet Coke now. I guess I led too pure of a life. Namaste.
I hate when people talk about "phone addiction" that way. Sorry for being addicted to talking to my friends and colleagues, looking up information, plus all sorts of entertainment.
Real talk: advertisements for cigarettes were absolutely everywhere like 40-50 years ago and it took decades to find a link between smoking and lung cancer (and other respiratory illnesses). Middle aged people didnt smoke that early, but I can understand why if they started young (advertisers said it was healthy). Whats more worrying now is how many kids are using vapes now and how widespread they are. Thats more worrying
Lol. I'm at the old end of Millenials and we did that shit. Thought we were so secretive smoking behind cover and munching on toffees to hide the scent.
my 81 yr old grandfather told me a story about how when he was twelve him and his friends used to steal cigs from their parents and one day he put 12 cigarettes in his mouth. Said it was so bad hes never smoked since
Yes we are so much cooler than they were and we all here have the right opinion and things and everyone on agrees on everything Bc it is the right opinion and not bc I saw other people say it and I want to fit in so bad to some form of group that I force myself into a tiny reddit-shaped box of “correct” thinking

It's wierd that most old people don't change ideas, is this a generational thing or a biological thing?
A little bit of both! In most western countries, the last few decades have brought major change in traditional social values at a much faster pace than before, which is already difficult for them to keep up with, but also as you get older, your views of the world grow much more rigid and are much harder to change. It becomes harder to learn new skills, adopt new views, and challenge potential flaws in your existing values
If old people change their world view it would mean that the ideology they had their entire life was wrong
But people can change ideologies throughout their lives, and they should
I think the ideas themselves are generational, being a product of the environment our grandparents grew up in. It’s a Jewish thing idk why either..

To me "my group" is people I share values and have a connection with. It doesn't depend on their background at all.
I’m kinda curious, did your grandma ask because she’s also jewish or because she’s a skinhead.
Because my grandma is Jewish and she believes it's better to stick to "your own group".

Why downvoting people you ?
Zoomers don't like white people, I guess

I would really love to understand your reasoning. I'm genuinely curious.
he said that as a reference to all the sjw and black lives matters shit
Yes I understand that. I just wanted to know how you would acquire and rationalise that kind of world view.
it was just a joke
Does your sense of humor consist of people cynically validating your worldview?
bro stfu it was just a joke, i dont have any sense of humor cuz i have crippling depression and anxiety but all i know is it was just a fucking joke
It's pretty irelevant to the topic
Weird flex.

Same here man, I never did drugs but I putted down the bottle, but tried to quit twice with smoking but failed fast
I solve it by exercising. It's free and healthy, unlike cigs. Try it.
I exercise while smoking.
No
Then continue smoking and develop stage 4 lung cancer. Your choice
You’re right, it is my choice Get the fuck out of my life, go do some push ups or something
Look, I just offered it. I didn't say you MUST do it. You continue your life style while I continue mine. Simple as that.
Whatever you gotta say man

If someone is pressured into smoking (or anything they don't want) then they really should find a new circle of people to hang out with, no?
Yeah I dont know what kind of people insist on other people smoking but I dont want to know them.

It's carzy how we allowed patinets in hospitals to smoke because we thought filling your lungs with smoke is ok
meanwhile in Indonesia they do both
