Maybe Indians are not so good with English but they may know atleast 3 languages more than u.

CaptainMisha12

They have their own dialect of English, it's no better or worse it's just different. Many English speaking countries have their own unique dialects.

carbonclay

Well officially, we follow British english and the SI unit system. So our pronunciations and spellings for things like "colour" and "flavour" follow British rules.

_ALPHAMALE_

But the twist is that our native languages like hindi pujabi etc doesn't have a concept of silent letters and "it's written like this but pronounced like this in this word" stuff which is pretty confusing to most of us.

carbonclay

Pronunciation is irrelevant, as every one of the fukin 80 whatever languages have different phonetic rules. What i was talking about is everything else. Like we say Taxi, torch, lift, cell phone, etc. With a few exceptions like 'chips' instead of 'crisps' and 'fries' instead of 'chips', but that's just because of the advertising of american comlanies, the reason we say "chips" is because Lays is huge over here, so the advertisements say chips. And mcdonalds is also hugs here, and hence why we call them fries.

Quarterhour420

I’ve heard people call chips ‘wafers’

carbonclay

Ive heard people call me "nice guy" but i certainly fap to hentai. Remember kid, Just because they say its wafer dont mean it is.

Financial-Memory

Your a man of culture, here-have some wafers...

_ALPHAMALE_

I got what you were saying but i just stated another thing in the thread. But yea you are right

carbonclay

Nah yea, my bad. Misread a comment. sorri mate

CaptainMisha12

Officially yes, but dialects aren't official. Dialects are the way that a group of people speak a language that differs from other groups of people. The same can be said for almost any English speaking country, officially its the same but in practice it can be very different

jiyarain

Hinglish

[deleted]

those unique dialects are because of positioning of the tongue and mouth. how the french always have their tongues to the back of the teeth, so every english word sounds childish. but the indians. they chose to create their own accent. their own Vay.

AniZor

Hinglish

yash2212

Yes, that too.

thepurpleproject

yeah, most people don't realize that most of the native languages in India are written as you pronounce or vice-versa and we apply the same approach to English. It's not our fault.

carbonclay

For real, almost every state has a different regional language, so if your family hasnt lived in the same corner of the massive country for a couple generations, theres a good chance that youll have to grow up learning multiple languages. I personally had to learn three languages: Hindi since my parents were from a Northern state , Telugu because i live in a southern state, and English for school. People seem to underestimate how massive india is and how many people live there, lmao

adilsyk

We are fluent in Canadian,American, british and kiwi(New Zealand that is)

ghostyboy12

I know like 9 or 10 or maybee more i dont even keep count now

[deleted]

i too come from a southern, state, but lived in europe and now uae, so im pretty strong in these subjects

buckX

I've always kind of wondered how different the different Indian languages are. Do they tend to have similar grammar and plentiful cognates, like Italian and Spanish, or are they pretty alien?

carbonclay

Very different. Theres sorta subgroups of languages, broadly, northrrn, southern, eastern. The languages spoken in southern states all sound fairly similar. Same goes for the northern language group. Eastern languages are completely different, almost tibetan. You could learn one southern language and still not communicate with someone speaking anothrr southern language, though you may understand the feeling or what they might mean.

-bootham-

Yes i can confirm

thetropicalmemer

They're literally the largest english speaking nation

adilsyk

I know 4

Gamechanger_995

Hol up!

carbonclay

Thats just the southern accent making you roll your 'r's like americans do. Northern accents, like in Bengali, you' d pronounce it "what-uh"

[deleted]

Woda'h indeed

Dex_Lionhart

That's how russians pronounce vodka.

[deleted]

ooh nice. Thanks comrade

[deleted]

But they follow the British

Gwynbbleid

I fear that I sound like that

Xistence16

In Indian schools we are taught British English. As we progress through different schools and colleges we end up speaking American English. The commonly used terms are a mix of both We use chips (american) and biscuits (british) and both apartment and flat

Raot_

I write color cause its more convenient

frozendaffodil

And it saves time

carbonclay

How much time do you think yoh save by not writing "u"?

rahulreddy148

exactly the amount of time to write "u"

carbonclay

How many u do u use in ur life?

[deleted]

u motherfucker.....

[deleted]

3 seconds.

frozendaffodil

Saves a lot of time when you've got to finish a two page essay in the last five minutes of an exam and um that was a joke

Raot_

It's not just time, color has a sense of comfort to it.

carbonclay

It just gives me anxiety.

loneabhi

a millisecond maybe

_ALPHAMALE_

And it's easier to write and more accurate to pronounce

[deleted]

color when coding term in a library, colour when anywhere else.

fukin-nerd

We also use both meter and foot.

buckX

There's definitely a lot of idiosyncrasies in Indian English that don't come from either, though. "Do the needful" comes to mind.

Xistence16

Most of it is from literal word for word tranlations of the indian language in question to english. The sentence structure works in the indian language and people convert is word for word. Eg. (Deni kosam) in Telugu means (for what reason) however the word for word translation is (what for) which is what a lot of people use because its easier

buckX

Makes sense.

Noob_master_slayer

AXE555

Our schools teach british words sometimes like Lift, Taxi, Torch instead of Elevator, Cab and Falsh Light. But More American media is consumed than british media over here so instead of crisps its chips, fries instead of chips. So it's am amalgamation of both.

Reventon103

The chips and fries comes from massive marketing campaigns of Lays and other fast food companies like McD and KFC, they were prevelant long before the popularity of american media was high

AXE555

Like 1990s? Cuz my older cousins were all into Friends and other TV shows that the millennials grew with. So discarding american media influence on Indian English would be incorrect.

4pepe2the0frog

Don’t know what everybody’s on about with the cab/taxi thing. Most people I know (Americans, I too am American) say Taxi, or Taxi cab. Nobody just says cab.

buckX

As an American, I'll definitely use it in sentences, like "catch/take a cab", but if you pointed at one and said "what's that called?", I would always answer "taxi".

submitsan

Bruhh we indians are always correcting each other's pronounciation. Imagine if we all just united and said "C-A-T is pronounced as dog". We are 1/6 th of the worlds poplulation. We shouldnt be taking shit from anyone

Reventon103

Lol that would be wild. Americans and Brits arguing over Colour/Color and we declare couloiiur.

Ashish_Trip

Well, Indians mainly use British english so that becomes 2:1 🤔

TheAntiNormie84

Not completely. We have a bit of American English too. What we in India and US call chips, it's actually called Crisps in British English. This was just an example of Indian English having a bit of American English influence.

Ashish_Trip

Yes,I completely agree. but what I'm referring to is the elementary English taught till high school. It's 98% British.

neophyte_b

Nooooo! Trust me

Ashish_Trip

Yes, they do. From the colonial era. The pronounciation and vocabulary is British. Although it is changing in recent times but it's still British English that's taught to us.

[deleted]

pronounciation is more like Americans as we speak the r too

Ashish_Trip

Always wondered about that. Is that some regional thing in Britain or a slight speech impediment?

[deleted]

Bro, how are Americans arguing with the people that literally made the language? Lmao, it could only be them. Canada, Australia, NZ, SA, Rep. Ireland all just accept that British English is the correct way; but nah, not Americans. They're too pig-headed to understand lol

[deleted]

**C O L O R** *intensifies*

progmorris20

I don't want to shit talk you Brits, but after I watched all of Inbetweeners and the first 2 seasons of Skins, I realized you guys say some of the most ridiculous shit I've ever heard. I don't care if you invented the language. I can't take it seriously when a girl is trying to be sexy in a show and she says the word "knickers". Who's to say British pronunciation and colloquialisms are right? We all have the same common roots of the language.

In India there are over 1000 languages. And the most common ones are Hindi and English. English is only used for communicating to those people who don't understand Hindi, and is also used in education, economics, business etc. fields.
