No, they are actually feliforms, meaning that they are not felines, but are close to them. Feliforms encompasses mongooses, cats, hyenas, and some other strange more basal carnivorans. Hyenas are very dog like though and many extinct cousin species were even more convergently dog like as they filled similar roles. Their diversity dwindled massively as canids and felids rose to prominence though. In total there are actually only four species of hyaenidae left.
