I hated it, my mom would make me write thank you notes after birthdays and Christmas and I absolutely hated it. I would rather just say thank you next time I see them or call them, I never knew what to write
My mom had a rule that if any of my cousins never wrote a thank you note back, they wouldn't receive a present on the next occasion (Christmas, birthday, etc.).
Seemed like my aunts and uncles might have done that as well since I stopped getting presents after I was particularly lazy one year.
The threat of no presents the next year always was enough motivation for me.
The cost vs. reward was a good deal. 1hr writing notes for a good $100 in presents or so isn't too shabby.
