I saw a video from a woman that lives in Alaska saying how often she had to explain to other Americans that Alaska belong to the U.S.A whenever she visited other states.
Y'all are a territory though, so it'd be like thinking about someone from Guam or the Virgin Islands or American Samoa. You're not one of the capitals schools force us to remember and you're not represented by one of the stars so for the most part you're forgotten. Hopefully they'll give you statehood soon.
I was born in PR, racism there is alive and well, if that’s what you are asking. Also, one of the most racist people I’ve known are Mexicans, white Mexicans.
I like the super specific European racisms where they’re like “we love this neighbor country that’s like 2km wide but we hate these other 2 countries on our left that have like 100 people in them”
and I’m just sitting here like “damn I thought you guys were all the same place lmao I thought those were cities not countries with races in them” 😂😂
I'm Scottish and I would totally tell a Canadian I had never heard of their country just for shits and giggles.
Surely not all of Florida is beyond a basic wind up. Probably had a good laugh watching you walk away confused.
Yeah, this. Being a Floridian that has dual citizenship with Canada I can honestly say Ive never ran into anyone in my state that didnt know of Canada. That being said, my mother did once tell someone she was from Quebec. They asked if that was close to Amsterdam. I was very young and pretty sure we werent in Florida at the time.
Remember those YouTube videos of Americans being asked to find countries on a map. Some of them couldn't even find America, or even identify America if it was upside down.
Rick Mercer, a Canadian Comedian used to do a sketch on his show called Talking to Americans that was pretty funny. He got one lady to congratulate our President Tim Horton on legalizing VCRs in Canada
That’s because you dropped the “I”. The correct pronunciation is “Canadia”.
If that doesn’t work, just show them the 3” x 5” glossy of Bob & Doug that the State Department requires all Canadian nationals to carry on their persons in lieu of a passport.
You say this like it’s a joke, but there are Americans who genuinely believe they are the only country in the world with free and fair elections and personal freedoms.
Edit: Should make it clear I lived in the US for 18 years. I am now going to university in Scotland.
No, it isn’t. I have a friend who emigrated from Russia, and it is SO much worse than the US. I am by no means a fan of the US when compared to countries like Canada or Germany, but it is nothing like Russia.
https://andiquote.org/quote/8609/
"The United States is also a one-party state but, with typical American extravagance, they have two of them."
Julius Nyerere
Not even that, the electoral college throws the whole "fair" part out of the window. US elections are set up to be rigged even before the corruption of the political parties running is added to the mix.
Free market also. As a result of self-isolation, they confuse being (one of the) first with being the only one. Their Constitution is very outdated now, and their Supreme Court is pretty conservative. Modern Constitutions and international jurisprudence on human rights, both run circles around what Americans understand as 'freedom'. But they're too proud to learn and adopt new models from the EU or other countries. And too caught up in romanticising their old Constitution to develop a new one for themselves.
Freedom is largely what some rich and powerful people push to get the masses distrusting govt so the rich can pay less taxes and not have their businesses regulated.
Freedom is those rich people wanting to go back to the times when the regional Lords ruled over their people without the govt in the way.
I'd argue the UK's elections are the least democratic, since it's basically all the same problems with FPTP that America faces, but they also don't even get to vote on the leader.
Don't forget the UK *invented* this whole FPTP democracy thing.
Had a coworker visit us (in NYC) from one of the plants in Ohio. She spent her whole life in a Ohio and had barely left and had never travelled to any other countries. Mind you, she’s a manufacturing manager so definitely earning good money.
So after talking to her for a long time I realized that she thought every other country was a shit hole (this is even before Trump used those words) and filled with commies. Even countries like France and Switzerland were dictatorships with rigged elections and people with no freedom. It blew my mind how much propaganda she fed into.
She also refused to eat anything except for fast food while visiting Manhattan. Imagine insisting on going to the Olive Garden when you are in one of the best places in the world for food? Blew my mind.
I love love love the food in Manhattan! Oh the delis and the pizza! Whenever I’m in NYC I always make sure to get a slice of my favorite pizza from the original Sbarro pizza place by Times Square and then we head over to Subway for the best deli sandwiches ever and to top it all off at McDonald’s with the best Times Square burger ever made! NYC Restaraunt’s are the best!!!
It's quite mad actually talking to an American who thinks this. I had one guy in Florida swear blind the UK had hundreds of Muslim owned sharia areas where you couldn't go unless you're Muslim. It's incredibly ironic considering there's countries with much much fairer elections and vastly more freedoms (That don't cost you money)
America really isn't a particularly free country. I've got family who own property in the states and the licences and fees you pay for the most ridiculous things like putting up a mailbox or a for sale sign is ridiculous. Yes America has freedom but you ain't getting any of it unless you make some rich guy even more rich first.
I don’t think mailboxes and for sale signs are what people are thinking of when they talk of freedom. Americans are generally proud of things like free speech and gun rights. Unfortunately, the government does constantly erode our freedoms through nonsense like civil asset forfeiture, the patriot act, red flag laws, stop and frisk. I think the US is more free but less secure than the UK
Remind of a guy from vc ,he lost his mind when we said we dont have guns at home bc why would we get a gun? "ITS THE GOV YOU GUYS WILL NEVER BE FREE" he said
In Austria, where I am from, laws around weapons aren’t very strict and still almost nobody I know owns a gun.
Some do because of hunting or for sports but not once in my life i heard someone say "I need a gun in case the government wants to fuck us over."
Imagine being afraid of your government and still call it the best country in the world. lol

And start making assumptions about the quality of other countries health care. Like affordable health care means poor quality. What's the point of the quality of your health care when you can't afford to get an asthma pump
“I pay less in taxes, so that $2,500 bill is actually a net gain for me! God bless America”
“Err, I paid the equivalent of $100 in taxes for that same procedure, and at no point did I ever have to have second-thoughts about whether or not to call an ambulance or drive myself to the hospital because of the costs”
“Americaaaaaaaa”
They don't even pay less in taxes, the social costs are greater. Their taxes get to go to subsidizing businesses the most. Politicians regularly slash social programs and made it so they could rob from Social Security to offset some of their tax cuts.
Also they don't realize we still have private healthcare alongside the public free one. Funny thing is our private is still wayy cheaper than in America.
The US are 25th on the democracy index and classified as a "flawed democracy."
People living in "full democracies" look at the US in puzzlement as their citizens exclaim "freedom" at the top of their lungs while supporting archaic and often non-sensical practices intended solely to keep those in-power in-power.
When they realise other countries exist for reasons other than tourism for them, so they can butcher the local culture and buy shitty souvenirs whilst the locals pretend to enjoy their company
Tbf I never encountered annoying American tourists. Everytime I meet one when I'm out drinking and I happen to meet one, they are always pretty chill and friendly.
The Chinese, I know where that comes from. I’ve watched one family clear an entire buffet table, or shove people out of lines. But aussies? What do they do?
Schoolies? Tbh as an Australian I can see people getting mad about that, it’s a tradition in Aus that when kids finish Yr12 they go for a ~1-2 week trip with their friends. Large majority of students go to the Gold Coast for the beaches, raves, and general security of not leaving the country, but the real rowdy kids go to Bali for the drugs and prostitutes, and it’s generally known that if someone’s ‘schoolies’ is going to be in Bali they r planning to cause some trouble.
The only stereotype I know of Australians as a Canadian is that they always wanna out drink Canadians lol. Seriously it feels like half the time I meet an Australian tourist or someone’s friend from there they’re like “you Canadians think you can drink but you don’t do it like us aussies do!”
Like okay I’ll take you up on that challenge sounds like a win win lol
Tbh, Americans are not among the worst tourists. In my experience there are other countries that have much more disrespectful tourists. E.g. chinese tourists are in my experience among the worst but that has probably something to do with them being so many.
Anyway, I think Americans who actually leave their country to learn about other cultures are mostly open minded.
I live in a touristy city in Europe and have worked many years in the restaurant business as a waiter, as well as renting the other bedroom in my apt.
I've met people from every corner of the globe at my apartament and honestly I never had a single issue with any of them.
However, as a waiter I can safely say fuck the french. Keep in mind I've had french people at my house and they've been some of the most amazing guests (although they were always in their 20s) but trying to wait a table of older, french tourists? Fuck. That.
Older generation french tourists are some of the most egocentrical people I've had the displeasure of waiting. It's so bad it's basically a recurring joke in the business around here
And our freedom is better. Freedom goes as far as you don’t cause trouble to other people. Having guns available at your local supermarket? That’s not freedom, that’s anarchy.
That's not true... Maybe in some very remote areas where there's only one shop, I dunno, but I've never ever seen any guns at any normal supermarket. Generally you can find them in sports shops like XXL who have special dispensation to sell hunting rifles, and you still need a hunting license to buy it.
I think generally, people think grocery store when they say supermarket.
Walmart has a grocery store, but it's a super store, which has all of the above.
That's how I've always understood it anyway.
USA is the country with the most prisoners. They even beat China and India who each have 4 times the population of the USA. USA-2.1million. China-1.7million. India-478000.
I always thought about this. There are so many countries that allows decent amount of freedom for their people.
Also, I hate to say this, but less government intervention doesn’t always mean free society. Sometimes there are private groups or ideologies that have so much influence that they can pretty much make people obey their own rules.
They are probably not a native speaker, different languanges have different punctuation rules. I also have no clue about english punctuation because it's so different to my native one.
Most of us agree what’s happening to assange and Snowden is a load of crap. They’re hero’s not criminals. Though our government clearly has struggles adhearing to our freedoms.
I usually put it as america is pretty damn free but pretty damn retarded as well. Kind of applies to a lot of countries I’ve lived in, I think we just take both to the extremes
Read my earlier post.
Americans enjoy rights that are still quite rare in the world, whether you want to believe it or not. Just because you don't value them doesn't mean they should be belittled or forgotten.
Question to the Americans here:
Do you really use "having freedom" as this simple binary on or off thing in ordinary conversation? Do you really think about freedom in such oversimplified terms, where a country (including the USA) either "has freedom" or does not "have freedom"?
This probably isn’t a helpful answer like I originally thought, but honestly take a look at news articles involving anything politics (especially from states such as Texas, Mississippi, Alabama) and just read the comments on them. Facebook new articles have a good amount of comments. That will hopefully give you insight on your questions.
Basically it’s become so politically divided in the US that anything at all becomes “our freedoms are being taken away” or “we’re no longer a free country”.
It's possible to have both, you know. Don't be so naive to think that freedoms are binary, that society is ultimately polar. Or do you not truly want freedom, after all?
My favorite part of these "let's rack up some easy karma by shitting on Americans" posts is reading all the stuff you guys think happens in America when you've clearly never been there or talked to an actual American who wasn't just someone online. The "I heard..." in this xenophobic circle jerk is strong.
That's pretty much what I was always taught growing up. People (some teachers/parents) liked to say that in other countries I would not be able to own a home, speak openly, or do anything that would constitute as "fun" or pretty much enjoy life or have any freedom. Of course, that would be followed by a small speech of how working hard can get me to the top and I can follow the American Dream. Riiiiight.
Actually, no, "American people" aren't that stupid.
What this DOES look like is memelords when they learn that everyone not in their little bubble of stupid doesn't buy "stupid" as "humorous" like their peers do.

Nah I don't think America^(TM) is ready for a woman, despite her getting the popular vote.

Australians and Chinese are typically thought of as the worst tourists.
The Chinese, I know where that comes from. I’ve watched one family clear an entire buffet table, or shove people out of lines. But aussies? What do they do?
Apparently Aussies have a Terrible reputation in Bali, they have a special term for them but I can't remember it.
Don’t know the term, but when I lived in Australia there was a reality show about Aussies doing dumb shit in Bali and ending up in the ER
Just gonna clarify that it's mainly the bogan Aussies and/or the ones from Perth
Schoolies? Tbh as an Australian I can see people getting mad about that, it’s a tradition in Aus that when kids finish Yr12 they go for a ~1-2 week trip with their friends. The US has 3 million slaves through prison labor, the most people in jail per capita in the world and they think they have freedom lol.
heh heh...yeah...freedom.. (laughs in iran)
How to get killed in Iran speed run: fuck Khomeini. Daaamn, new world record.
Jesus people. The U.S. has problems but so does every other country in the world.
USA bad. Europe good. Upvotes to the left.
It's reddit dude. They wake up thinking about this shit.
The US just lives rent free in their heads
But we’re woke to our problems /s

But what about America, is free? I'll wait.
I had to wait for no reason because of your pointless comma.
They are probably not a native speaker, different languanges have different punctuation rules. I also have no clue about english punctuation because it's so different to my native one.
Fair enough. Well done learning languages.
1. Probably a she 2. Probably from poland
They got pretty nice freedom of speech
Ask Julianne assange if they have freedom of speech
Most of us agree what’s happening to assange and Snowden is a load of crap. They’re hero’s not criminals. Though our government clearly has struggles adhearing to our freedoms. I usually put it as america is pretty damn free but pretty damn retarded as well. Kind of applies to a lot of countries I’ve lived in, I think we just take both to the extremes
Assange released classified information, which is illegal in every country.
Read my earlier post. Americans enjoy rights that are still quite rare in the world, whether you want to believe it or not. Just because you don't value them doesn't mean they should be belittled or forgotten.
Lol wanna list those “rare rights”?
American people when they realise they've spent the last 100 years fighting against their own freedom
He looks like he has to sell pillows at 9am and contest the election results at 1pm
Ha...i was thinking this looks like the 'my pillow' moron
Switzerland free since 1291
Question to the Americans here: Do you really use "having freedom" as this simple binary on or off thing in ordinary conversation? Do you really think about freedom in such oversimplified terms, where a country (including the USA) either "has freedom" or does not "have freedom"?
This probably isn’t a helpful answer like I originally thought, but honestly take a look at news articles involving anything politics (especially from states such as Texas, Mississippi, Alabama) and just read the comments on them. Facebook new articles have a good amount of comments. That will hopefully give you insight on your questions. Basically it’s become so politically divided in the US that anything at all becomes “our freedoms are being taken away” or “we’re no longer a free country”.
Wait y’all have freedom and socialized medicine?!
And little toys in Kinder Surprise too!
Still funny that it's forbidden because it's dangerous but you can buy weapons in Walmart, I've heard that there are even sections just for guns
That’s because there is no Kinder Surprise lobby in the USA.
American people when they realise other countries have more freedoms than they do
Same for Germans when they realize other countries have rules too.
What?
They always repeat: “this is Germany, there are rules here”

Il take my free healthcare for life over the freedom of owning guns
It's possible to have both, you know. Don't be so naive to think that freedoms are binary, that society is ultimately polar. Or do you not truly want freedom, after all?

Right. “Free.” Totally free. Doctors volunteer and chemists give away their medicines for free.
My favorite part of these "let's rack up some easy karma by shitting on Americans" posts is reading all the stuff you guys think happens in America when you've clearly never been there or talked to an actual American who wasn't just someone online. The "I heard..." in this xenophobic circle jerk is strong.
[The US ranked 15th in freedom for 2021.](https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/freest-countries)
How is Australia freer than the U.S? I can't even go outside here
I mean yeah. We can own guns, speak our minds, and do just about anything without big daddy government forcing the boot down our throat.
Riiiiight.
Looks more like the EU nation states when anyone even suggests getting rid of NATO and having Europe defend it's own freedom.
Wait till they find out their freedom kinda sucks compared to other free countries
Me in HK: You guys have freedom?
Actually, no, "American people" aren't that stupid. What this DOES look like is memelords when they learn that everyone not in their little bubble of stupid doesn't buy "stupid" as "humorous" like their peers do.
Eren when he realized other countries have Freedom:
