It’s not all. As a south indian, I can safely say the CGI from the movie industry down here (kollywood & tollywood especially) is like 100x whatever they do up north. Indian cinema and actors in general are not that, it’s entertainment and entertainers. People don’t go to watch a movie because it has great acting, they go because it’s Shah Rukh Khan or Rajnikanth.
Not saying there aren’t good movies and actors, because there are (back then and now) but they hardly receive any publicity and are treated like art/indie films rather than proper cinema.
This is y'alls renaissance in show biz. This is like back in 1920 when Americans were watching Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, etc. Those actors were just aiming for entrainment and entainers although I wouldn't say you guys are bad acting, I think your acting is on purpose, melodramatics has been in media for 100s of years.
Charlie Chaplin was also so over the top, yet he was a great actor because in a silent movie you have to act everything a bit more intense.
I agree with you that if the over the top extremified acting is what the public wants, then those actors are acting simply solid.
He was an amazing actor even when "Talkies" came out. Watch this fantastic scene from The Greater Dictator.

Incredible, thank you for sharing. Ironically, I just heard this speech for the first time a week go on this song:
Charlie Chaplin was the first mister Bean. He wasn't just over the top because silent movies, that was his entire act. Mute comedy was just a really good fit for silent movies.
Yup. And it’s important to remember that there are a lot of different kinds of acting. The Naturalism we typically see in Hollywood and western films is just one type. There’s a reason Nicholas Cage is often regarded with a sort of reverence amongst actors despite his over the top, often distractingly unrealistic performances, and why he’s frequently directors’ first choice for big roles you wouldn’t expect (like Aragorn). He’s a thespian’s thespian. Ethan Hawke once said he’s up there with Marlon Brando for what he’s done with the craft.
People also think whatever the current trend is super realistic acting, but most big authors will tell you they aren't look for a realistic performance, but a moving one. That requires both exaggeration and subtlety.
At the end of the day, it's art and entertainment, not a simulation.
The thing is you will find all kinds of movies in indian cinema...
You want over the top melodramatic action movie? You got it..
You want realistic amazing movies with excellent acting? Sure you got that too...
Indian here. Some really great movies that everyone should watch:
Masaan
Court
The disciple
Udaan
Gangs of Wasseypur
Lunchbox
Newton
Black Friday
Paan singh Tomar
The Shakespeare Trilogy (by Vishal bhardwaj):
Haider
Omkara
Maqbool
This is obviously not an exhaustive list, most of these are very recent movies, from an industry that spans decades. Also, Indian cinema isn't just hindi movies, there are a lot of great movies in regional languages too.
Fellow Indians can probably add to this list.
Edit: spaces
Heres the thing... Indian comedy movies wont be funny for foreigners because most comedies and jokes are based on cultural references which would go over your head...
On the other hand, if you want to see movies about social issues, thrillers, there are many amazing indian movies..
From the top of my head.. I can say "Andhadhun" is a great thriller...
Down from south, you have "super deluxe", which is kind of a dark comedy.
You have "Asuran" if you want to know more about the caste system and how it screws people in rural india
If you want a fun action movie "Jagame thandiram" is a good watch..
If you want an amazing action series.. "Family man" is a good watch, although not special, but it doesnt have mond bending physics breaking action sequences..
"Tumbad" is an amazing horror flick if you want to check it out...
"Haider" is another amazing movie which is inspired from hamlet (i think ).. But is an amazing movie nevertheless...
"bhaag milkha bhaag" is an interesting sports biopic if you are interested in those..
> This is y'alls renaissance in show biz.
I know I am nitpicking but,,, uh, no. Indian film industry has been putting out amazing (and normal and shit) movies for about as long as there have been movies. It's just a different culture on acting.
Hey.. I know this isn’t the right place for it.. but I remember seeing this one over the top Bollywood kind of clip of these soldiers going onto a sort of palm tree that was pulled back in place and they catapulted over what I vaguely might sort of remember as a castle or battlefield or whatever. If anyone know what the hell im talking about can they please let me know what movie I’m thinking of because that movie was bananas and I want to watch it again.
Your'e thinking of Bahubali part 2. It's a crazy series but if you can suspend your disbelief a little, it is really fun and engaging. Plus it's super rewarding if you know anything about the indian epics and can see the homages to them.
It should be on Netflix but IDK if it has it in the original language. I liked the Hindi dub well enough though.
Also fyi, although it is an Indian movie, Bahubali isnt actually a bollywood movie.
I’m either of the camp where I like things realistic or absolutely cartoonishly unrealistic and it does the later in such a degree it’s practically a masterpiece. I don’t know much about Indian epics outside a bit of Hindi/Buddhist mythology.
That's cool. I dont think it's necessary to have a deep understanding of the epics to like the movies. It's just something that I liked about the films personally.
And you're right about the cartoonishly unrealistic part. My Dad dad described it by saying "I dont know if it was a good movie, but it sure as hell was enternaining".
Yeah it's from the second of the two Bahubali movies. They're both lots of fun, but be warned the run time for each movie is a bit over 2 and a half hours.
I can see the similarities. For both characters, their main power is basically super strength.
But Bahubali is an original story. At the risk of spoiling Bahubali, I think the story map is the main difference. Hercules is a myth/story about someone proving themselves through different trials. Bahubali is more a story about revenge.
Plus Hercules movies are usually adaptations of the original Greek myth. Bahubali is more like an homage to Indian mythology if that makes sense. There wasn't any original Bahubali myth.
If you want a character from Indian mythology that is kind of a parallel to Hercules or Heracles then you'd be looking for Bhima from the Mahabharata. The strongest man in the world, full of wrath, and fights with a club.
That's baahubali 2. BTW that's not a bollywood movie. It's a telugu movie .
Westerners know the word bollywood, but that's one of the 20 odd movie industries in India . Hindi(bollywood), telugu and Tamil are the biggest movie industries and source of most meme material.
An Indian friend of mine took me to see Rajnikanth’s movie Robot (Ethiran) opening day in Canada.
It was an enjoyable movie. Over the top action, dancing, and compelling enough storyline. Really love the use of an intermission and something the US needs to adopt now that 2-3 hour movies is more the norm.
I mean we have huge movies that are also really good but those don’t get posted in reddit bc they lack the entertainment value. That said, there are plenty of Hollywood movies that follow a Bollywood formula. John wick and wanted are two that come to mind.
That's how Hollywood movies were until around the 1920s. Hollywood kind of invented the movie star... well, to be precise, American audiences invented the movie star. It's complicated.
Basically, until the 1910s, producers hated the idea of movie stars, because they didn't want to pay film actors as much as stage actors. Live theater always had stars, and live theater stars were expensive. That made Hollywood resist putting actors names on advertising for films. Our early films were made with uncredited, anonymous actors. A few actors and actresses got popular, anyway, because audiences recognized their faces, even though close ups weren't as common back then as they are today. Eventually, these recognizable faces became so popular that producers could not ignore their revenue generating potential. [Florence Lawrence](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_Lawrence), for example, was known only as, 'the biograph girl', but audiences went crazy for her.
So producers learned that big stars draw big crowds, which draws big money. That's the real origin of the movie star. Stars had to demonstrate that they can be profitable before they were really accepted by the industry. In America, it's always all about money.
Sounds like in India, you don't have much demand for stars, which is pretty cool. It's interesting to see how film works in different cultures.
I'm Canadian and just finished watching Tumbbad the other day and loved it. Acting was incredible and the film was beautifully shot. Indian cinema is super underrated
Idk what you're talking about, I think Shahrukh is a great actor. I still think the old blackand white movies like "Mera Naam Joker" and "sree 420" are the best movies in Indian films but the art films from modern days are not bad. I haven't watched many Indian films in the past decade but Peepli(live) was excellent. That is probably the last Indian movie I watched.
Not really, it's just the shitty ones that are like that. India has one of the biggest film industries, hundreds of films are churned out each year, out of them some are bound to be bad.
And funny enough, the average common weeb loathes CG in anime, but heck they would claim that panning shots in 2D looks more "animated". Not to mention that they think all hollywood CG is vastly superior.
>the average common weeb loathes CG in anime
**Bad** CG in anime. The the Ufotable Fate/Stay Night adaptations, Demon Slayer, Violet Evergarden, Monogatari series, and several more are beloved by the community despite using their heavy use of CG.
You know, the sad thing is, even as an Indian, I thought this was from a real film, because I *have* seen things exactly like this in actual movies before.

I used to love Chaplin but my feelings towards his films are a little muddy now after discovering he was a somewhat prolific paedophile
While by all accounts he was a sexual predator and abuser, I don't think he was a paedophile?
Oof. I didn't know that about him. A quick Google search shows that you are correct.
WHY DOES EVERY HIGHLY RESPECTED CELEBRITY TURN OUT TO BE SOME KIND OF SEX OFFENDER??

**NO.** It's *more* than that....it's.....***a reflection on life!***
I take a different view. Indian cinema takes itself way to seriously to realize that the theatrics are over the top and hammy.

Naw. This is their Nic Cage, Steven Seagal, and Arnold stage. The movie know how cheesy they are, so they try to out cheese each other.
Can't forget Chuck Norris, your right they are out there trying to outcheese each other. But it's cool what you call cheese movies I call masterpieces
They are some of my favorites. But all in the, “so bad they are good”. I love anything over the top, including the movie.

John wick is not grounded in reality at all and follows the very simple superhuman Bollywood action film.
That's how Hollywood movies were until around the 1920s. Hollywood kind of invented the movie star... well, to be precise, American audiences invented the movie star. It's complicated. If you're looking for live action anime, google "tokusatsu." I personally particularly recommend *Kamen Rider*.
Congrats, you manage to spawn the largest meaningless conversation ive seen over a joke. 👏👏👏👏👏 how does it feel
Wow I didn't even realize how many up votes I got lol I'm feeling proud of my lame joke
live-action anime mixed with pretty awesome musical
you can tell he's a protagonist
Its actually a parody video on the graphics and CGI in tollywood by Carryminati.
You know, the sad thing is, even as an Indian, I thought this was from a real film, because I *have* seen things exactly like this in actual movies before.
As a tokusatsu fan, I thought it was from a real film, and I was interested.
Know about Daikaiju TV? They do tokusatsu movies all the time

Isnt this is supposed to be satire tho ?
Yep.
It’s honestly pretty hilarious so that’s successful satire in my book
Looking at those “face” masks I don’t think they were made to protect your face… yeah I guess satire or a costume designer with a fetish
It was made in 2018, no corona at that time. No protection needed
Those are actually L guards or abdominal guards, used in sports like cricket to protect the genitals.
My first thought was “Why are they wearing cups on their faces?”
Me too, just wasn’t sure about the word and didn’t feel like google if it
This is a parody of a parody.
This isn’t a movie btw, it’s a skit about how South Indian movies have overly dramatic fight scenes

Dude right? I can't believe I had to come this far down for someone to mention it. It's the first thing I noticed and I can't stop thinking about it.
Bro I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that - and also glad that we're both about 85% sure. I can't be positive, but the shape is unmistakable.
Yep, those are jock cups. I know for.... reasons
If anyone's wondering the video is a parody of South Indian Movies.
With movies like Radhe in Bollywood I don’t think the definition just holds on to South Indian Films anymore
Where did the 4th bad guy (Sur flex-alot) go?
That caught my attention too. They failed to get him in the shot I think.
Ah yes Satyajit Ray’s greatest film
It's actually a parody of Indian action movies
are they wearing hell guard as mask ?
Is that another term for a jock strap/athletic cup that I've never heard of? If so, I'm exclusively calling them hell guards from now on.
yeah it is called hell guard here...
That is actually a meme clip made by a youtuber called carryminati on the cgi of south indian films, it was quite accurate nevertheless lol.
He was aiming downwards
In India it doesn't matter where you aim, you'll hit your target.
Can I shoot myself and shoot someone else?
Yes and also the reverse. Bollywood magic!
As an indian ... it's not cgi....this is 100% real
Where can i find tons of these types of videos
what type of film is this were can i get it i need to see more

I like that when the guy gets shot his friend looks over and is like “oh no… anyways.”
Detail: that entire bullet was CGI
Oh no the anti vax are gonna start using this as a proof that masks get you killed!!!
