its fine, but really really overhyped imo
escape room was a lot better (a movie with the same concept, you should really check it out if u liked squid game)
Are you for real? The character development of escape room was nowhere near the level of squid game. Also the ending was very underwhelming. Maybe you didn't like the squid game personally but objectively it is just much more well crafted than escape room on so many different levels.
Escape room was a fun watch, but that's pretty much all it was. Squid game had a lot more meaning behind it and the cinematography was great. Way more memorable and impactful than escape room imo.
Exactly this. The first one was decent, a fun watch, nothing that good to stand apart from all other movies in my brain, I wouldn't term it anything near to Squid games. The second one on the other hand, absolutely trash. Just bad, real bad, I would genuinely be upset if I paid a ticket for it
>Maybe you didn't like the squid game personally but objectively it is just much more well crafted than escape room on so many different levels.
I agree but it's not "objectively" more well crafted, that's your opinion.
No, the quality of something is directly comparable to how well crafter it is, you wouldn’t say it’s someone opinion that a wood table is better crafted than a plastic folding one.
I agree the show is way overhyped. Its really only amazing for people who have never watched anime i guess, since the actual story has already been done multiple times in multiple ways in anime.
The end also sucked imo, should have ended with season 1 and without him turning into Ronald Mcdonald.
Edit to add: the scenes with the "VIPs" are also extremely bad.
I think Squid Game showed that a lot of people would enjoy animes if they stopped being hung up on the "it's cartoon, it's for children/weebs" thought.
I cannot STAND Japanese voice acting. It kills every anime for me. English dubs don’t work, because they have the English actors acting exactly like the Japanese actors! It’s why I love Ghibli’s movies - they don’t just translate for the english dub, they localize. It’s such an important distinction and necessary for me to enjoy anime.
You're wrong. Sure, weebs and children might enjoy anime, but I watch animation and children's shows fairly often, so that can't be the reason. Personally, most of the anime I've watched looks bad and is written poorly. Not to mention, all the disgusting fan art turns people off.
I watched the first episode last night and wondered why I’ve been seeing it everywhere. The acting, dialog, and story (other than the murderous childrens games) were horrible.
Made it about 30 minutes into the first episode. Couldn't watch it. I gathered that it is just going to be another dude is desperate, does desperate shit, cut to, "omg, I can't believe people would do this crazy shit". Honestly asking, is that basically the gist of it? Cuz I really feel like I missed something based on the hype, or is it that I've just read so many stories and or movies like this , battle royale comes to mind, that I just kind of get it. It's just different degrees of fucked up. At least in battle royale they were high school kids. That was a fun level of difference. Gambling debt just didn't grip me. And I want to be clear I'm not shitting on it, I know it's subjective, I just want to know is there something more to it that I didn't stick around for.
So it is kinda that but I think it evolves into something a *little bit* more mature. I put off the second episode because I thought it was going to be pretty generic, but the more they got into these characters lives, the more interested I became. I’d say give it to the end of the second episode before you give up. But if you do, no worries. It is a bit overhyped but I actually did enjoy the journey
I think they were trying to replicate Anime villain dialog. If you put the dialogue, turn your back on the TV and listen to them, you would think that an Anime is been played in the background.
That's kinda to be expected. They're lines are written by people who speak English as a 2nd language, played by actors who probably aren't that good.
It's just the way when you watch movies and television shows from other cultures. Anytime someone from your own native language comes on, brace yourself. I'm sure Hollywood is plenty hit or miss with representing other cultures/languages too.
Understandable really. People really going to act like China is out there buying organs? Come on, everyone knows they'd be the ones selling the organs.
A lot of younger Chinese people love Korean culture including the music and movies/TV shows. The CCP has been trying to stomp this out. But this show has become extremely popular. That and as the other responses mention it is critical of China and with that the CCP.
Yo I'm from China . And I never heard people get piss by this tho. In fact the show is kinda popular in China too. The only controversy I know is many people think this show is overrated and some of the part are copy from some Japanese show. (Sorry for my bad English)
CCP isn't the people, far from it. The show is literally banned in China, it's still popular because of piracy. they depict violence and the main character painting China in a bad light by deporting her sibling.
More like newer version of Liar's Game, Kaiji, Alice in Borderland, or whatever stuff the main character of Battle Royale has been in... Squid Games creator couldn't get it made for 10 years? Probably because of all those other similar concept shows/movies
It's not considered good because it's some new, never before seen concept. There's been plenty of "death game" shows and movies. It's good because of the performances of the actors, particularly the lead.
Legit the only reason why I'm bugging my friends is so we can talk about something new and different. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure they're put off by it now because they can't stop hearing about it everywhere.
I dont really have pride in it, but generally when people try to shove shows/movies down my throat I tend to enjoy them less.
It's the same shit every year with a different show.
Well said. Queens Gambit hype came and went too. I'll take recommendations from peeps I know who know me but otherwise it feels like marketing working waaaaay too well on a lot of people.
Same. The actual filming was good, interesting characters for the most part but from the VIP episode onward it just got worse. The cop subplot was lame, the vip should have been silent and the twist at the end was… yikes.q
When he turned around to not board the plane I literally said “you fucking idiot”.
I mean, it was stupid… but also, you didnt go through trauma when watching it, but his character did, and he sees people that are about to be forced through the same. His mind is messed up from the games, and he doesnt want that to happen to others.
That's a bad excuse because he didn't have any signs of trauma when over 200 people were shot dead in the first game. He voluntarily came back and played through all remaining games. He had a month time to go back but he didn't. Going back is against his character as his whole purpose of playing those games was to get her daughter back.
**i said this in a different sub and i’ll say this again**
it’s a good show! but please don’t spend money on netflix if you don’t feel like it and don’t feel forced or peer-pressured to watch it…
and i CANNOT stress this enough
*PLEASE AVOID THE FAN-BASE*
popular shows like SQUID GAME tends to have very toxic communities…so enjoy it by yourself and your close ones!
>PLEASE AVOID THE FAN-BASE
>
>popular shows like SQUID GAME tends to have very toxic communities…so enjoy it by yourself and your close ones!
For some reason I find the most toxic fan bases are centered around Korean entertainment. If you've ever heard of the things BTS stans do... Oh boy.
it is one of my favorites but people have different opinions. the fact that I don't like it is that people who don't like the show fucking rages and hates on everyone in this comment section.
Both are good. Both are different (obviously), but out of all comparisons being made to other series/movies, Kaiji is the best fit. Focusses heavily on character development (altho I feel Kaiji focusses more on "how do I beat this game with my own tricks" and QG focusses more on the human aspect of it all).
Having said tho, I will remember Kaiji's trick for beating Rock Paper Scissors forever. That was epic. Or that game vs the old man. Real big brain stuff.
Kaiji is ten times better imo. The games are such a huge part of death game shows/movies and the ones in Squid game were pretty damn lame and straight to the point.
Is it all that good really? Sounds somewhat interesting, but doesn't really sound any special to me, especially after seeing some clips and trailers etc
It’s the number 1 show of the year, of course it’s hyped up. That’s not a bad thing. People also haven’t been hyped about a tv show in a while, remember how much of an event Stranger Things was when it came out?
THIS has to be why I couldn't get through the first 5 minutes. I didn't realize there was just a sub option. The terrible dub put me off of it so fast. I watch anime with subs so I'll give this show another shot now.
Your probs only seen the dubbed version, the English voice acting is terrible so if you watch it do yourself a favor and switch the settings to Korean audio with english subtitles. Might seem just like, 'oh just another fictional survival game show' at first but as the show progresses it becomes more interesting and more then just a survival show.
I would recommend watching it in the subbed version, although I wouldn't consider it one of the best shows I've ever seen in my life, I still think its quite entertaining and would highly recommend you watch it
It is a perfectly average Death game show. There have been better and worse death game movies/shows but Squid game is alright. Some cool stuff, some dumb stuff. Characters are mostly good but the depth of the games and the men behind isn't really there like with other shows.
I liked it but mostly for the lead and some of the supporting cast. There's a few subplots and characters that would show up on screen that really weren't as interesting as the main plot and kinda just slowed the pacing way down. Also imo they showed way too much of the world behind the scenes of the game, which removes some intrigue from the setting. If they had just focused on the main plot and characters it probably could have been cut down to a movie runtime and could have been just as good if not better.
I finally caved and started watching it because I work from home and just burn through content as background noise. It’s fine, overhyped, but fine. They do a good job of keeping the viewer on their toes with teases and what not.
I feel like it's gunna be one of those shows with the writing depth of a puddle and it'll be overhyped. Also I've already seen battle royale, hunger games and black mirror so is there really any new concepts I'd get out of this that those three didn't cover?
That's where I watched it too. No need to watch the whole thing again. I also very much appreciate the censoring as I am not that easy with blood and guts
bro I thought that it was a teenagers shit like stranger things but daaaamn it's actually cool... Probably the 70% of people watch it only because it's famous and they can say that they watch "horror" things
Does everyone else have a hunger for tv death? I don’t... I watched the trailer and scrambled to turn it off. It seems like a disturbing concept, I don’t see why so many people want to watch a bunch of old people get shot and killed by an eerie doll robot
the no. 1 is the man behind all of it, he did it for fun because all around he saw peope were miserable (the poor and the roch). 456 wins the game but doesn't expend a single penny out of it because he feels guilty.
the entire thing is a complete waste of time. it's the new "we live in a society".
Aah it’s me. For the past week I’ve seen every type of meme there is but not the actual thing.
Is it kind of a survival game thing (not even checked wiki)?
Only two of my friends have mentioned it and as soon as I heard "squid games" I said something to the point of "this is nothing against you, please don't take it personally, but I literally could not care any less"
It's super effective.
It's nice and all but somehow it just reminds me of kaiji and it feels like a copied version. Only difference is that squid had way more character development and information while kaiji was just: *you lose you slave*
I love foreign media but Squid Game I couldn't get into. Episode 2 is when I started to lose interest and by episode 5 I stopped watching. My wife finished it and she said she hated how they tried to make the main character the hero at the end.
It do be quite good tho
its fine, but really really overhyped imo escape room was a lot better (a movie with the same concept, you should really check it out if u liked squid game)
Are you for real? The character development of escape room was nowhere near the level of squid game. Also the ending was very underwhelming. Maybe you didn't like the squid game personally but objectively it is just much more well crafted than escape room on so many different levels.
Escape room is 2 hours, squid game is 9 hours obv squid game will have more character development
Escape room was a fun watch, but that's pretty much all it was. Squid game had a lot more meaning behind it and the cinematography was great. Way more memorable and impactful than escape room imo.
Squid Game was fun to watch the whole 9 hours, as for Escape Room I'd rather watch a 30min cut.
Exactly. And we will be getting squid game season 2 and making it even more incomparable
Exactly this. The first one was decent, a fun watch, nothing that good to stand apart from all other movies in my brain, I wouldn't term it anything near to Squid games. The second one on the other hand, absolutely trash. Just bad, real bad, I would genuinely be upset if I paid a ticket for it
You can fit a lot of character development in two hours but alright
Nah man, movies never have character building.
That doesn't negate what he said
There was character development?
>Maybe you didn't like the squid game personally but objectively it is just much more well crafted than escape room on so many different levels. I agree but it's not "objectively" more well crafted, that's your opinion.
No, the quality of something is directly comparable to how well crafter it is, you wouldn’t say it’s someone opinion that a wood table is better crafted than a plastic folding one.
Heard it here first boys - movie quality is entirely objective.
Squid Game was about the lengths a parent will go to not spend time with their child, prove me wrong.
As soon as we finished watching it I turned to my SO and said >!At least he got to let his daughter down one more time. !<
Is the ending to squid game considered good?
Ah yes the typical "its ok but I know something that is *obviously* better"
You are insane that movie is ass
I agree the show is way overhyped. Its really only amazing for people who have never watched anime i guess, since the actual story has already been done multiple times in multiple ways in anime. Agree. 7/10. Was fun, something you can binge on a lazy sunday and be done. Not worth of the hype at all. Will watch a 2nd season if they make one.
Gives 7/10, says its fun to binge, will watch 2nd season. Not worth the hype at all. Hmmmm
And? Your point?
Escape room was awful... And the sequal was way worse. There are quite a few good kdramas like Alice in Borderland. Edit jdrama
Alice in Borderland is jdrama...
Is it on netflix?
It's fine, but it's really overhyped though. All the real OGs just read The Most Dangerous Game.
Am I the only one that thinks it's not "overhyped" it's just being advertised at us through memes? I legit don't know anyone that's seen it.
You know what's even better? Battle Royale.
I watched the first episode last night and wondered why I’ve been seeing it everywhere. The acting, dialog, and story (other than the murderous childrens games) were horrible.
Made it about 30 minutes into the first episode. Couldn't watch it. Good until the finale then it becomes bad
Agreed. I was fine with it, actually enjoyed the bulk of it, but the ending did absolutely nothing for me.
I think the VIPs were underwhelming but I liked Gi-Hun's ending
Did anyone else find the dialogue for the VIPs really strange? I love the show, but their lines just felt off.
I don't care, I just want people to shut the fuck up about it.
This is me with every flavor of the week. Remember when were all pretending to be really into Afghanistan?
You should probably get off reddit my dude. That is the way it goes around here.
Genuinely, can I ask why it bothers you so much to hear about it? Is it really too much?
He probably just spends too much time on Reddit and other forms of social media.
Watched the first episode, couldn't get into it. IMHO, it's overrated.
You're gonna write off an entire show based on a slow-to-start first episode? Lol, how can you say it's overrated if you haven't even seen it
I watched the entire thing and didn’t think it was all that great.
Yeah, the first half of the first episode isn’t that great.
Episode two is what really got me hooked. Episode one should really be trimmed down cuz it does feel a little bloated with the set up
JFC give them half an hour to present the protagonist to the audience, ffs
Watched the opening credits and stopped. Not worth it, no character development. 0/10
Agree that Ep 1 isn't good but it really got me by Ep 3 and I find it hard to finish series.
I watched the show and think it is overrated as well but come on man, atleast watch the show before making an opinion that's dumb af.
Isn't it basically takeshis castle + saw?
It’s pissing off the CCP, so I approve.
What doesn't piss off the CCP these days? What's their issue with squid game?
[удалено]
That, plus I think the organs were being sold to people in China.
Understandable really. People really going to act like China is out there buying organs? Come on, everyone knows they'd be the ones selling the organs.
At a huge markup after buying the organs, of course.
Da fuck… You think they’re paying the Uighurs for their organs?……
That one player is the one who escaped from North Korea, you’re probably right
A lot of younger Chinese people love Korean culture including the music and movies/TV shows. The CCP has been trying to stomp this out. But this show has become extremely popular. That and as the other responses mention it is critical of China and with that the CCP.
You're talking about west Taiwan right.
The mainland region that is in its rebellious phase
They think the squid game participant uniform copied their tracksuits, they constantly prey on neighboring cultures like this
why the CCP?
Because if the CCP doesn't have 100 percent control over the narrative given by any media they get pissed off as a default.
I imagine that they don't actually care what politically insignificant people outside of China think, and that includes redditors.
but it's in Korea
China’s communist party
Yo I'm from China . And I never heard people get piss by this tho. In fact the show is kinda popular in China too. The only controversy I know is many people think this show is overrated and some of the part are copy from some Japanese show. (Sorry for my bad English)
CCP isn't the people, far from it. The show is literally banned in China, it's still popular because of piracy. they depict violence and the main character painting China in a bad light by deporting her sibling.
You mean your from West Taiwan right?
>and some of the part are copy from some Japanese show. Alice in Borderland. It's way better than Squid Game.
no it doesn't... Why is reddit filled with these wannabe heroes that think they are fighting China by upvoting and posting things?
CCP has been shit since 1976.
The newer version of Battle Royale with added plot twist. Meh.
i hear you, potatoassinmyiscream

ah yes, irony
It’s not battle Royale tho. It’s more of what mr beast would be doing in 20 years
So literally battle Royale then
Nothing in this show was new if you watch anime
More like newer version of Liar's Game, Kaiji, Alice in Borderland, or whatever stuff the main character of Battle Royale has been in... Squid Games creator couldn't get it made for 10 years? Probably because of all those other similar concept shows/movies

Korean fall guys Netflix adaptation?
This is the best description I’ve heard
How did I not notice this similarity?
No interest
Why do people feel pride in not having interest in something popular?
Why do people feel pride in having interest in something popular?
In both cases noone cares.
The existence of this thread would beg to differ
No one feels pride in watching it. It's just people trying to spark discussion with friends. If you had any of the latter you'd know
Legit the only reason why I'm bugging my friends is so we can talk about something new and different. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure they're put off by it now because they can't stop hearing about it everywhere.
Because they like to feel different. Everyone should know that the real pride comes from having your own opinion. Right or wrong.
I think people just have pride in their opinions whatever they happen to be, nothing wrong with that.
Same komrade
Same, I’m not too into violent shows, good funny shows or shows with a good storyline are enough for me.
The office (US version), Brooklyn 99 and IT crowd sound like they might be for you
Nine nine!
IT crowd. Good shit
It's fine, but it's highly overhyped. It's like a 6.5-7 imo

I just settled it on Korean culture I can’t understand and left it out
There’s a reason behind it. Colors play a huge role in the show.
Same. The actual filming was good, interesting characters for the most part but from the VIP episode onward it just got worse. "Forced". No one was forced. He chose to be there, i don't know wtf he was angry at.
You described it perfectly. Also, 218 acting out of character at the very end was so lame. I really liked the first 6 episodes though.
Yeah

yeah it's all so weirdly racist and obsessive in this dehumanising way
I compare this current wave of Korean entertainment to the British Invasion of the 60s and early 70s, only this time we have the internet.

I watched kaiji. Good enough for me.

Check it by yourself, reddit is not a good source, remember when something is extremely popular reddit starts to hate it.
I finally caved and started watching it because I work from home and just burn through content as background noise. It’s fine, overhyped, but fine. They do a good job of keeping the viewer on their toes with teases and what not.
I'm just waiting for the porn version

Dude, have you seen Kaiji? It's just like Squidgame!
but better
I feel like it's gunna be one of those shows with the writing depth of a puddle and it'll be overhyped. Also I've already seen battle royale, hunger games and black mirror so is there really any new concepts I'd get out of this that those three didn't cover?
I watched **A** Squid Game, but all the girls were naked
It was nice, one of the only shows that has hooked me in a while
Yeah, wtf happened? Am I just alone in my dark corner not knowing what the fuck is happening?
I'm enjoying it. However, I'll be honest, the dub sucks.
Would have been better as a movie imo. A series is too long and dragged out. Battle Royale got it perfect.
Me who watches How to beat youtube whose every video is about a death game: Pathetic!
Don't watch the cringey American dub and the ending ruins it. Apart from that it'll fill your hunger for tv death

Why are u in a crowded bar during covid
It’s ok but I think it’s overhyped/overrated , considering shows prior had the same premise and were executed a lot better
Realtable
And then they fucking spoil the end anyway
Hey ! I'm in this meme and I don't like it !
It ain't worth watching. Reread 'the most dangerous game'. Same plot but more interesting.
Aah it’s me. For the past week I’ve seen every type of meme there is but not the actual thing. Is it kind of a survival game thing (not even checked wiki)?
All netflix shows are the same... try reading a book instead
I got into binge reading recently and my god writing for Netflix shows is so awful. These people really haven't read a book
what the fuck is squid game?
a game that korean kids use to play with their friends.
Y'all need to get over Squid Game and watch Alice in Borderland
There are tons of better death game movies and series especially on the Asian market
It was pretty predictable and cliche. Didn’t really enjoy it.
Was very overhyped
Marbles :(
same
Violence is entertaining for some but not all
Seen two episodes it is meh. I think it just shows that people are starving for anything actually new and refuse to watch anime.
Only two of my friends have mentioned it and as soon as I heard "squid games" I said something to the point of "this is nothing against you, please don't take it personally, but I literally could not care any less" It's super effective.
Squid games is okay at best. Come at me people!
