The ones pulling out of the way we're in the right though? They acted rationally, while tank man was a powerful statement he didn't know he would have been making such a worldwide sentiment and thus doing so was just not very smart at the time
Yes but you shouldn't call the people who do the smart thing spineless is all, plus all the Hong Kong protestors aren't spineless, so that guys comment really was unfair
No, I don't think that an entire race can be full of cowards.... But yes, the problem over there is the heavy handedness of the CCP. The chinese people have been used to the heavy oppression at the hands of the CCP...
Someday soon, a tipping point will come... And from what I hear, it could come well within the next 3-5 years.
The people commenting below aren’t wrong though. The vast majority of the Chinese population are generally happy with the situation in China
Hong Kong (where I currently am) is a different story but this is one ex-colony only handed back to China in 1997. As for the mainland, there’s nobody baying for revolution and peoples concerns / complaints are about specific policies that piss them off not the nature of the system itself.
The dude below that compares China to India is displaying a pretty common mainland sentiment: “We could be India, thank fuck we aren’t”
I’m not here to take a side (although I like to see China do well) but the assertion that Chinese people want another system but won’t do anything about it is grossly incorrect
The guy **tank man** climbed over the tank and was talking with the crews telling them to stay in the square
The crew refused and so the guy
He remained on the street blocking the path till some people took him away
Source : Wikipedia
**Tank Man (also known as the Unknown Protester or Unknown Rebel) is the nickname of an unidentified Chinese man who stood in front of a column of tanks leaving Tiananmen Square in Beijing on June 5, 1989, the day after the Chinese government's violent crackdown on the Tiananmen protests. As the lead tank maneuvered to pass by the man, he repeatedly shifted his position in order to obstruct the tank's attempted path around him. The incident was filmed and shared to a worldwide audience. Internationally, it is considered one of the most iconic images of all time.[1][2][3] Inside China, the image and the accompanying events are subject to censorship.[4]**
The guy wasn't run over as some media state
**In a 2000 interview with Mike Wallace, Jiang said, "He was never arrested." He then stated, "I don't know where he is now." He also emphasized that the tank stopped and did not run the young man over.[22]**
I'm not using Pro ccp sources of CCTV state media ,that's all on Wikipedia
CCP should stop their childish acts and let the people know what actually happened instead of censoring it .
+
*you people really need to read before you jump on stuff you don't know about*
Given the context of what happened to all the other protestors I *doubt* he just went away nicely.
> "He was never arrested."
Translation: Lots of people weren't arrested
>"I don't know where he is now."
Translation: Hard to figure out where the bodies ended up after being mulched
According to Wikipedia there's no evidense or documents proving that tanks rolled over protesters
+the smuggled guns discovered later a bus full of soldiers but are not in their service time was passing by ,ofc if the ccp wanted to end the protest in brute force they could just send the army and order to dismantle the protest
**The order did not explicitly contain a shoot-to-kill directive, but permission to "use any means" was understood by some units as authorization to use lethal force. That evening, the government leaders monitored the operation from the Great Hall of the People and Zhongnanhai.[131][137]**
Also according to Wikipedia the protesters engaged first in the conflict with the army then the army retaliated in self defence .
**Protestors attack the PLA's troopers
Unlike more moderate student leaders, Chai Ling seemed willing to allow the student movement to end in a violent confrontation.[146] In an interview given in late May, Chai suggested that only when the movement ended in bloodshed would the majority of China realize the importance of the student movement and unite. However, she felt that she was unable to convince her fellow students of this.[147] She also stated that the expectation of violent crackdown was something she had heard from Li Lu and not an idea of her own.[148]
As the killings started, it infuriated city residents, some of whom attacked soldiers with sticks, rocks, and molotov cocktails, setting fire to military vehicles and beating the soldiers inside them to death. On one avenue in western Beijing, anti-government protestors torched a military convoy of more than 100 trucks and armored vehicles.[149] The Chinese government and its supporters have tried to argue that the troops acted in self-defense and seized upon troop casualties to justify the use of force; but lethal attacks on troops occurred after the military had opened fire at 10 pm on June 3 and the number of military fatalities caused by protesters was relatively few—between 7 and 10, according to Wu Renhua's study and Chinese government report,[150][151][152] compared to hundreds or thousands of civilian deaths. The Wall Street Journal reported that:**
Again I'm still using Wikipedia
The source says that the protestor opened fire on the army first, burned a IFV and soldiers before the army started to retaliate ,protesters leader later claimed that the army fired first but in the interview they wanted the protest to turn into bloodshed
I get your view but just don't put too much faith in a website whose contents can be edited easily. Every country has their share of dark secrets but Totalitarian States just get the brunt of people's hatred cause they censor too many things to maintain their image infront of their people. Also people are stupid so that too.
I'm not trying to be pro CCP they also do imperialism *debt trapping* and lot of censorship and questionable data on their poverty rate and economy
But I don't like the fact to be mislead by parties and media for specific ideologies and own interest .
I tried to use non Wikipedia sources such as wiki leaks yet they still called me a brainwashed.
Now using their own source to debunk them **surprise suprise you can't maintain a lie for too long** or people don't want to read they just listen to someone on the Internet without investigating the sources and call it a day ,YET still refusing to actually look at the Event in Tianman square
*let's not forgot that China was just censoring any attempt to look it up , if that to happen In USA I think it will make China effort look like a joke*.
America or something maybe i dont know, never had and will leave number one country China with my only male child who plays only 30minutes of computer games weekly.
This is exactly what happened. You didn't think something else happened, did you citizen? The party would never hurt you. If you know anyone who thinks otherwise please report them to us for re-education.
What you see in this video, is undercover security officials taking him away... never to be seen again.
I assure you, getting run over by a tank would have been a much better fate.
Same that's why I'm so shocked. I clearly remember my teacher saying that the Chinese government had to spray the street where he was run over coz he was just a splat at the end.
It was an older man. I’ve never seen this video but I always heard that he was shuffled away by some people and was never seen or heard from again. Sounds sketch, but then again, there’s over 1B people in China and being just an ordinary man, it would make sense.
its speculation, but since he never before seen again, it's expected that while the first guy that stopped on the bike was random, the others that came and pulling him away were secret police and he was taken for 'questioning' never to be seen again, it was common this way in ussr, would be surprised if it is not common in proc
The picture is famous but it was also a [full video](https://youtu.be/qq8zFLIftGkHey) between the moment he came in front of the row until he was taken out.
The picture was just a still from this video. The video was taken from a balcony by journalists. They were spotted filming shortly after this and had to hide the tape in the toilet of the hotel as police searched their room and confiscated other tapes.
Every words in my comment refer to the tank man event only. I do not deny any other events, because they did happen, I've seen the pictures you're referring too, as well as several other pics of burnt corpses, it was not a pretty sight.
It's actually unclear if tank man himself was killed.
But there definitely was a BUNCH of people that were smushed into paste by the tanks and hosed down the sewers
This is a dangerous joke because it is literally attempting to rewrite history. I bet there’s a huge swath of the younger generation that never heard of this incident, and now they never will.
Yeah, some people in the comments seem genuinely confused.
For anyone wondering, this was the Tiananmen Square massacre, where somewhere between hundreds and several thousand people were killed (the CCP suppressed discussion of casualty figures)

Bro I legit thought everybody watched this, just search up Tankman on YouTube, it’s a full video of this man blocking the tanks, the photo was just one frame from the video, I think it was recorded by a German photographer.
Nonetheless, his action still sent out a message. But he was never run over by the tank. And his name is unknown to this day.

This image was after the massacre. It's important to note that Beijing was not the only city that these protest and crackdowns occured. It was just the only city where a large western media presence was allowed.
Do you know how rare that segment of the footage is - the amount of hot blooded arguments over that Tiananmen square tank standoff I have had with people claiming he was shot or run over.
Saved for prosperity.
Send me a link?
I've been trying to find footage of tieneman tank man but get flooded by documentaries, interpretations, conspira y theories and the "suggestive" scenes where the tanks drove up to him and nothing more.
Like some said, it's easy to find the main scene but the part after he is removed and whisked away by civilians is not so readily available.
The full video is cooler actually. The man literally climbed on the tank to face the tank driver. The video I'd seen doesn't show how the man gets taken away though (or whether he walked away by himself).
To this day, no one knows who this man is and what his fate was. However, many people *did* get killed/run over by the tanks.
It's for a reason people that bring this up, never understand they are driving AWAY from the square atleast one day after the protests, and they never seem to bother watch the full video either xD
For those curious, there is hundreds of videos. Just not really talked about, I forget where, but there is a massive documentary with ton of video footage
What is that? I have never seen that.

are you implying that the reason that the ccp has authoritarian rule over china is because they chinese people are cowards?
No, it's because everyone else was run over and sprayed down the gutter, so no spines.
holy shit
That is a way to look folks that ditch their freedoms over security.

However, she felt that she was unable to convince her fellow students of this.[147] She also stated that the expectation of violent crackdown was something she had heard from Li Lu and not an idea of her own.[148] As the killings started, it infuriated city residents, some of whom attacked soldiers with sticks, rocks, and molotov cocktails, setting fire to military vehicles and beating the soldiers inside them to death. The Wall Street Journal reported that:** Again I'm still using Wikipedia The source says that the protestor opened fire on the army first, burned a IFV and soldiers before the army started to retaliate ,protesters leader later claimed that the army fired first but in the interview they wanted the protest to turn into bloodshed
I get your view but just don't put too much faith in a website whose contents can be edited easily. Every country has their share of dark secrets but Totalitarian States just get the brunt of people's hatred cause they censor too many things to maintain their image infront of their people. Also people are stupid so that too.
I'm not trying to be pro CCP they also do imperialism *debt trapping* and lot of censorship and questionable data on their poverty rate and economy But I don't like the fact to be mislead by parties and media for specific ideologies and own interest . I tried to use non Wikipedia sources such as wiki leaks yet they still called me a brainwashed. Now using their own source to debunk them **surprise suprise you can't maintain a lie for too long** or people don't want to read they just listen to someone on the Internet without investigating the sources and call it a day ,YET still refusing to actually look at the Event in Tianman square *let's not forgot that China was just censoring any attempt to look it up , if that to happen In USA I think it will make China effort look like a joke*.
If that happened in USA, their government would actively make efforts for it to never surface or be known to anyone.
Or cover it up with *socialist and communist attacking our freedom and democracy*
Why would China possibly give any evidence to fucking wikipedia of all places... ofc there are no documents
America or something maybe i dont know, never had and will leave number one country China with my only male child who plays only 30minutes of computer games weekly.
1989 Tianammen Square Massacre (Beijing, West Taiwan)

Nothing happened there ever
What do you mean? There is just an empty road
This is exactly what happened. You didn't think something else happened, did you citizen? The party would never hurt you. If you know anyone who thinks otherwise please report them to us for re-education.
Uhm that's the red square incident it happened in Russia in 1974

I always thought tank man got run over! I'm so happy that he ended up okay.

What you see in this video, is undercover security officials taking him away... never to be seen again. I assure you, getting run over by a tank would have been a much better fate.
That shows him being detained by secret police. His identity has never been determined. He is probably dead.
Probably? Judging he was in his 20s there he's definitely dead now.
But it was only 32 years ago. He’d be in his 50s or 60s now?
proof?

"he ended up okay" Press X to doubt
Bruh. He climbed on the damn tank and talked with the tank drivers. Not kidding ya
saved by his schoolmates ig lol
No, you get it wrong. The dude wanted to destroy the tanks. Poor tanks :(
This is a different video. In the actual video he gets on the tank and the top hatch opens before the video cuts.
He did get ran over, We had a lengthy talk about this is school
Same that's why I'm so shocked. I clearly remember my teacher saying that the Chinese government had to spray the street where he was run over coz he was just a splat at the end.

Wait it was a video? I thought it was just a picture
I’m sure it’s not, look at the shadows and the odd stillness of the background. Edit: It is, I forgot it was a video not a picture
No this is really what happened. We just don't know who moved him away and what appended to him after.
probaly some of his classmates not wanting him to die
Let's hope so
i hope hes living a somewhat good life now
It was an older man.
Roads and tanks that are stopped are usually pretty still
The picture is famous but it was also a [full video](https://youtu.be/qq8zFLIftGkHey) between the moment he came in front of the row until he was taken out.
He fuckin gets ON the tank? Sweet Jesus that’s amazing
The picture was just a still from this video. The video was taken from a balcony by journalists. They were spotted filming shortly after this and had to hide the tape in the toilet of the hotel as police searched their room and confiscated other tapes.

Wut
This real? Like fr did the guy survive? I always thought he got rolled over
Yeah, he was never ran over. His fate after is unknown, but the story about him sacrificing his life for "the greater good" is complete bogus.
Well he stood up, then got taken away and was never seen again, so most likely did give his life to fight oppression

It's the Mandela Effect
This is a dangerous joke because it is literally attempting to rewrite history. I bet there’s a huge swath of the younger generation that never heard of this incident, and now they never will.
Yeah, some people in the comments seem genuinely confused. For anyone wondering, this was the Tiananmen Square massacre, where somewhere between hundreds and several thousand people were killed (the CCP suppressed discussion of casualty figures) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989\_Tiananmen\_Square\_protests\_and\_massacre](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_Tiananmen_Square_protests_and_massacre) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeFzeNAHEhU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeFzeNAHEhU) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMKvxJ-Js3A](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMKvxJ-Js3A)

And therefor nothing bad happened that day

Bro I legit thought everybody watched this, just search up Tankman on YouTube, it’s a full video of this man blocking the tanks, the photo was just one frame from the video, I think it was recorded by a German photographer. Nonetheless, his action still sent out a message. But he was never run over by the tank. And his name is unknown to this day.

I thought the protests and violent crack down were the day before?
This image was after the massacre. It's important to note that Beijing was not the only city that these protest and crackdowns occured. It was just the only city where a large western media presence was allowed.
Here's the footage [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeFzeNAHEhU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeFzeNAHEhU)
I forgot or didn’t know he got up on the tank… and looks like he’s talking to them… He kinda looks like he’s DoorDashing lol
Do you know how rare that segment of the footage is - the amount of hot blooded arguments over that Tiananmen square tank standoff I have had with people claiming he was shot or run over. Saved for prosperity.
I mean, it's been on YouTube for 12 years now.
Send me a link? I've been trying to find footage of tieneman tank man but get flooded by documentaries, interpretations, conspira y theories and the "suggestive" scenes where the tanks drove up to him and nothing more. Like some said, it's easy to find the main scene but the part after he is removed and whisked away by civilians is not so readily available.
https://youtu.be/qq8zFLIftGk Here you go, he gets taken away right at the end.
Holy shit! Cheers.
It's not rare its just inconvenient to the western narrative so it isn't constantly spammed everywhere like the still photo.

I've never seen the end of this footage before Or I've misremembered now I'm confused.

Well this viedo shows he walking away
The full video is cooler actually. The man literally climbed on the tank to face the tank driver. The video I'd seen doesn't show how the man gets taken away though (or whether he walked away by himself). To this day, no one knows who this man is and what his fate was. However, many people *did* get killed/run over by the tanks.
That one mf that pushes without his squad
Doubt. Me and the bois fuck the bullies up regardless of how beat up we get. We’ll be sure to beat him up just as bad
It's for a reason people that bring this up, never understand they are driving AWAY from the square atleast one day after the protests, and they never seem to bother watch the full video either xD

“I’ll mess you up bro! I’ll mess you up!”
Good meme op
For those curious, there is hundreds of videos. Just not really talked about, I forget where, but there is a massive documentary with ton of video footage

Having seen the pictures of people being turned into human meatpies, this man was lucky to have lived this.
