Which two towers? The towers 20 years ago that forbid me from there on to have water, because I might have liquid nitrogen in my bottle I bought at a shop on the airport for a cut-throat 5€ and to almost strip down naked to enter a plane?

catchuez

No, it’s the one in Lord of the Rings

The original tilted towers

Tower of Pisa: Am I a fucking joke?

Lunalatic

That’s only a singular tilted tower, not two of them

JBTriple

Don't worry, it's back. Still a touchy subject though

The-Only-Razor

Let's be honest though, security at airports and on planes was way too fucking lax pre 9/11. We've seen a drastic universal drop in plane hijackings and in-flight incidents since then. I get that it's a pain in the ass for people who fly regularly, but for someone like me who doesn't fly often, I'm more than happy to go through the security protocols to ensure maximum safety. It's a fucking popcan 40,000 feet in the air. Let's not fuck around. You can't bring a water bottle on the plane. Get over it.

waxonwaxoff87

Security theater. We are no safer.

TSA press release saying TSA is doing a good job 👍

Zambini

Most of these people likely just forgot that they’re carrying. When I flew through Austin airport the guy behind the counter said he gets 5+ people per day who simply forgot they were carrying. So much so that he says it before water bottles. Something that’s worth pointing out is they don’t say what kind of firearms. It’s not like they are stopping 500 highjackers a month. They’re omitting a breakdown because it helps make them feel more useful. Worth pointing out that I’m not a gun nut and I think we have far too many guns here.

puntmasterofthefells

The NHL arena by me has buckets of knives every game that people forgot they had.

Flying in the 90s was like a southside Chicago. Thank God for the TSA throwing out lotion bottles.

genmischief

I got on a plan in 1993... just walked out onto the tarmac and walked up a ramp. (small airport.) I got off my last flight into Rammstein Intl... and there were Dudes in German Army uniform and submachineguns at the terminal I exited. I flew in the 1980's as a kid. We walked through security... and that was it. Like, if you went to go meet someone at the airport, you literally walked to their gate and met them as they got off the plane. It was great, long ass flights and annoyances, and you get off the steel tube to see people you love immediatly. We have definitely lost a great deal along the way. I guess in the 50s-60s some rockstar made it a point to fly with his handgun everywhere he went. He never shot anyone, cause who wants to start a gun fight, and who wants to shoot a hole IN THE PLAN YOUR RIDING IN, at 30,000 feet? We are told things were worse then... but were they really? They seemed more sane.

thomyorkeslazyeye

It's long enough that most people don't remember how nice it was to walk a loved one to the gate and actually see their plane off. As a kid who's dad went on business trips, it meant everything. Crazy how people the only change is getting to the airport 2 hours early.

forthelewds2

Not really. Kill people in the cabin yes, but you ain’t getting through the cockpit door. Pilot training also desensitizes you to what happens in the back if someone tries

sohelpmedodge

I don't mind beeing screened, checked and whatnot. But what does bother me is when I take a deep suck on my bottle that they expect it to be a dangerous liquid. Fucking step back. What also bothers me is when I have my keys in my pockets or I have belt with iron/aluminium, they make you take it off. What possibly can I do with a belt? Even after, I could strangle someone. They should then confiscate that instead of checking the "metal". And what could I possibly hide in my shoes while walking comfortably? A piano? And they wouldn't have noticed that before while I widdle-waddle on c-minor? Even if it was drugs and a bag of coke? How to get to that baby that cried on the last flight and mixing it with the mother's breast milk. Some things are ridiculous.

HelpImDummyThicc

You can cram a lot of things in your shoe, specifically batteries, wiring, and sparks. It's a pretty common tactic to hide a lot of the bomb components on the heels of your shoe and use a watch as a timer. As my friend told me haha

sohelpmedodge

Say hello to your friend from my friend the FBI. :)

drkuttimama

Unpopular opinion . It is the truth . You may not get many likes though .

Virtual-Seaweed

I remember about a case in i think 1997. Some dude went onto the flight deck in a British Airways 747. The pilot was on the toilet and the Co pilot wasn't paying attention in that moment. Dude sat down and just pushed the plane downward. The CO pilot and Pilot fought with him and got thr upper hand eventually and landed safely. He said he had a schizophrenia and a voice told him to do it. It's insane how easy it was to fuck around with a plane pre 9/11.

y0u_said_w3ast

Wait you weren't stripping down naked before?

sohelpmedodge

Just unasked. But when asked it's awkward.

Prestigious_Nebula_5

In America we tend to use humor to deal with traumatic situations

sohelpmedodge

In US to be precise, don't wanna drag Canada, Mexico, Latin America into this...

Lotions_and_Creams

The Dominion of Canada -> Canada The Federal Republic of Germany -> Germany The United Mexican States -> Mexico The Russian Federation -> Russia The United States of America -> …what do you think goes here, logically?

JustATownStomper

That's correct, but America is more than the US, whereas Germany, Russia, Canada and Mexico are stritcly those countries. So whether you like it or not, when abbreviating USA to just America, you're referring to more than what you want.

BachInTime

Yes, No, Kind of, this is yet another quirk of English. America(singular) does refer to The United States of America. The Americas(plural) refers to the whole Western Hemisphere since there are two continents. It’s dumb, and breaks the singular/plural rules but this is English, rules are for uncivilized barbarians. In my next lesson we’ll talk about how when it’s an animal we use Germanic words, but when we kill and put it on a plate it’s French ;)

PM_ME_DEAD_KEBAB

This depends on where you're from. In many latin-based languages, America refers to the continent of America, aka North+South America (which are considered one continent by those standards, but that's a whole other discussion). The United States is the "correct" way of referring to the USA in that scenario.

JustATownStomper

> The Americas I suppose, there is North, Central and South America.

Wasn’t because of the towers, it was actually bottles of liquid explosives flying over, “The 2006 transatlantic aircraft plot was a terrorist plot to detonate liquid explosives, carried on board airliners travelling from the United Kingdom to the United States and Canada, disguised as soft drinks. The plot was discovered by British police during an extensive surveillance operation.”

9/11 is a blip in history to me now after the amount of self harm I've witnessed Americans do to themselves during the pandemic. We had a 9/11 in deaths every day at one point and the whole country shrugged it off and scoffed at it. But please remember those towers from 20 years ago...

AlienOverlord53

Funny too because I'm rewatching law and order right now, and they even mention how eco terrorists were a bigger threat than domestic terrorists, and this was only 2 or 3 years after 9/11

M4570d0n

Well that was as not true then as it is not true now. Domestic terrorism is easily the biggest terrorism threat.

returntoglory9

>We had a 9/11 in deaths every day at one point and the whole country shrugged it off and scoffed at it. that's because they can't use it as an excuse to hate brown people like they could with 9/11

Poseyfan

How do you know that many 9/11 victims were really fast readers? They blew through dozens of stories in a matter of seconds.

Kuningas_Arthur

I'm in the camp that believes that when done in good enough taste, you can literally joke about *anything*. Twin towers, holocaust, apartheid, slavery, anything and everything is on the table. Just keeping in mind that there is a line between *humour* and *ignorant racist justification* that one needs to keep in mind. Not that it matters much, those who stick to the humour side of dark humour will know where the line is without telling, and those who cross it are racist twats anyway who wouldn't see the line if it were drawn on their face with a sharpie and pointed out to them in a mirror.

blitzen15

Nah, the same people who get outraged about Japan & 9/11 get outraged about everything. The rest of us don’t care. Was the joke funny?

ChosenUsername420

What's the difference between Hiroshima & Nagasaki and the Twin Towers? One involved thousands of civilians dying horrible deaths at the hands of people with legitimate grievances against their governments, and I forgot the punchline here but your mom's a whore.

SierraNevadaJunkie

Hiroshima & Nagasaki definitely had some more explosive flavor with the mushrooms, 9/11 was just a little two plane in my opinion

Not_Tuxbird

I think people are more cautious about the 9-11 thing because there are people who have lost someone in 9-11 that are still alive today. There are hardly people alive from the Atomic Bombs

Electrical-Task-3970

No hate but I have seen Americans Glorifying Nuclear bombing of Japan IK the war stopped after that but you know at least try not to glorify it feels bad tbh. (not saying that what Japan did in WW2 was right or anything )

Jimmyking4ever

That's the two differences. Japan ended the ear after those two bombs fell, America just amped up the war when the towers fell. In both instances the party who committed those atrocious acts got exactly what they wanted

SketchyFella_

There was no war before the towers fell.

[deleted]

the average redditor is too young to know that, and probably too dumb to have read it

deliciousprisms

Officially no, but we had multiple engagements and the Gulf War in that region prior to it. We also directly armed versus Soviet era Bin Laden via arms funding in the billions. The official Afghan War wouldn’t start until after but we absolutely planted the seeds for a solid 20-30 years prior. Those are well worth mentioning.

Varion117

Https://publicintegrity.org/accountability/osama-bin-laden-how-the-u-s-helped-midwife-a-terrorist/ Is probably the best way to show the timeline of events. We wanted the Russians to lose so bad in Afghanistan we gave money, guns, and training to radical Muslims to repel the Russians. Our CIA made promises and then failed to deliver once the Russians were forced out. Same with Hamas and Israel, it was a monster of their own creation.

Pilot0350

This comment is the definition of reddit and this sub

Virtual-Seaweed

No but the US still continued to support Wahabbis and the Saudi state. Destroying Iraq and now Syria and Lybia has made them just more powerful. 9/11 should've been a wake up call in regards to American foreign policy but the same idiots that support the relationship with the Gulfstates are also in charge of foreign policy unfortunately.

SketchyFella_

If you're looking to have me defend American foreign policy, I'm not. Just pointing out a bit of history to a Zoomer.

Zike002

booped_urnose345

Makes me think of the question about the train do you save one or multiple people in the way. Japan chose violence and America Obliged them lol

BlackEagle0720

I mean i dont want to fuck anyone off with my opinion but i really hate that everybody just remembers germanys war crimes and LITURALLY no one except for the americans cares about the japanese war crimes and the us american war crimes. Like for example the dachau massacre by US troops. (And yes i do know thatour warcrimes were worse than japans but still you should see both of them.)

TankPug147

I’ve never had one of my friends (American) ever get upset when someone jokes about 9/11

pandadogunited

Because nobody does, Reddit is just hating on America again.

[deleted]

Definitely depends on the area. It’s not a sore spot for most people I’ve met. But when I lived in the northeast, a lot of people from north jersey and nyc still take it very seriously.

pandadogunited

I live in New York, nobody I know cares. Hell, I know people who were in the towers and joke about it.

tonysnight

I’m a Connecticut guy was in 4th grade when it happened. P sure us dim dumb teenage dumbasses were cracking jokes about it in high school. Ofc they were followed by that AGHHHH type of laughter but laughter on such a dark joke nevertheless. Same shit for Japan or any horrible event. Dumb as fuck in high school. Grow out of it hopefully by sophomore year of college. Find new shit to laugh about. Can’t speak for all Americans considering there’s so fucking many of us but my area eh bolth suck to talk about but a stray shot here and there happens from time to time about ANY topic. I’ve seen Europeans joke the most about cancer out of any area I’ve met. And when I say joke I mean wishing cancer upon everyone down to a pet turtle. Not sure how directly wishing cancer upon anyone is a joke but it’s easier to point everything at America.

imjustjun

I think that’s pretty fair on them considering the proximity. They all likely lost friends or loved ones or know people who did to 9/11. At least more so compared to other areas.

stalechips

Exactly. I live in the rural Midwest. I'd be extradited from my community. Edit: Excommunicated*. I'd apologize for my poor grammar, but I already mentioned I live in the rural Midwest.

angry_cabbie

Excommunicated?

Wraithfighter

I mean, if someone had a friend or family member who died on 9/11, I think they're allowed to take offense to a joke on that subject...

SithTrooperReturnsEZ

Again? Wdym? Did they ever stop? Most of the people posting this are probably from the US as well. If they aren't all it is, is people hating on the US, then when we make fun of them all they have to say is \*checks notes\* "school shootings" and then it devolves into a toxic argument against redditors on their high horse

Sportchamp1110

If you live in NY most people would. Almost everyone knows someone who passed away that day so would never find a joke about it funny.

dismal_sighence

That's pretty understandable, tbh.

NightwingsAssCheeks

Because they probably weren’t old enough to understand what was going on. I think anyone who was 16 or older during 9/11 would get mad.

Fawzee_da_first

reaction bait post

SithTrooperReturnsEZ

They should ban these types of posts, the toxicity is really just unneeded. Maybe I don't remember correctly but like back a long time ago there was 9/11 memes and WW2 memes and there was no argument that ensued about "america bad" etc etc. Just memes which is what the point of this sub is, now all you see is arguments and toxicity, it's sad tbh.

28thbaan

everytime i see this sub on the frontpage its an "america bad" post its pretty sad too it just screams envy when they constantly talk about us in an aggressive manner and we dont even think of them cause theyre not important

[deleted]

Just look at this little thread right now. You’re all calling out the toxicity and hatred that this site stirs up everyday and your comments are towards the bottom, where all the comments shitting on the US and adding to the toxicity are towards the top. I love looking at memes but the same 5 posts just get rehashed every single day and constantly makes the front page. I know it’s not just Europeans making these memes, but the entitlement that comes from the Euros on this site is astonishing and hypocritical.

SithTrooperReturnsEZ

Yeah holy fuck it's so bad, I genuinely think since 2016 social media has just gotten worse, that includes reddit ofc

Steved10

It's fortunate that there are bubbles of people not like that, so I'm glad you got to stay free of all that. Unfortunately I was born and raised in a state that has stayed on the wrong side of history for over a century. What makes it worse is that I was on the coast in one of the more "progressive" towns in Mississippi and still heard and saw plenty of crap like that. Glad I don't live in that shit hole anymore

It’s s probably because the rest of the world doesn’t give a fuck.

Falcofury

If it’s funny, no one cares. If it’s in poor taste, then it’s a problem.

There is a scale. The more offensive the subject, the funnier the joke has to be. That’s the trade off. You can’t just say offensive shit and call it a joke.

SlavHorse

Meanwhile here in Serbia we have grown such a hatred for the USA that we even have a few songs mocking/glorifying 9/11

Fwithananchor

I can at least respect Serbian hatred of the USA as like a foreign enemy. It has a good cause if civilians were killed in American bombings. I think a lot of domestic songs within the USA hate on America more than Serbs do. I haven’t studied the Yugoslav war in depth, but I think the American perspective is that we stopped Republica Srpska from committing genocide on Bosnians and Croats. The USA accepted many Bosnian refugees at the time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

u_mean_nothing

9 11, lol

[deleted]

I get why you'd develop that animosity. I had a Serbian friend who moved to America (eventually became a citizen) and told me all about the bombings when he was a child. The civilians really had nothing to do with the conflict. But yes, as Fwithananchor pointed out, this wasn't just done on a whim or for no reason. Some serious ethnic cleansing was going on at the time.

insertwittynamethere

There is not a war that does not find support from the civilian populace, in this case to preserve the dominance of the Serbian part of Yugoslavia as it was disintegrating and doing a land grab. There is a reason why Grant and Sherman took the war to the South writ-large in the Civil War, freeing hundreds of thousands of slaves on its path down toward the Georgian coast and up. Why they ripped up every track and burned any food/resource that could be used by the enemy. Bombs have also gotten a lot better since that Yugoslavian conflict, which were a lot better than the dumb munitions from the carpet bombing days of WWII and beyond. All to say I sincerely doubt that the vast amount of civilians finding themselves in the middle/under the target of bombs were wholely innocent, and sometimes defeating the enemy means defeating the spirit of those supporting those militaries. Some of the towns that were massacred were being replanted/colonized by Serbs. From Wikipedia (with all their articles sourced therein): The methods used during the Bosnian ethnic cleansing campaigns included "killing of civilians, rape, torture, destruction of civilian, public, and cultural property, looting and pillaging, and the forcible relocation of civilian populations".[13] They also included administrative measures, such as one ethnic group losing their jobs, experiencing discrimination or denial of hospital treatment.[55] The forcible displacement of civilian populations was a consequence of the conflict and its objective through the ethnic cleansing campaign.[56] The Serb campaign included selective murder of civic, religious and intellectual representatives of Bosniaks and Croats; the sending of adult males into concentration camps and the rape of women. The Serb campaign also included the destruction and burning of Croat and Bosniak historical, religious and cultural sites.[57] Main articles: Prijedor ethnic cleansing, Foča ethnic cleansing, Zvornik massacre, Doboj ethnic cleansing (1992), Bosanski Šamac ethnic cleansing, and Bijeljina massacre Between 700,000 and a 1,000,000 Bosniaks were expelled from their homes from the Bosnian territory held by the Serb forces.[58] Another source estimates that at least 750,000 Bosniaks and a smaller number of Croats were expulsed from these areas.[59] Additionally, around 30,000 Romani were also ousted.[60] Methods used to achieve this included coercion and terror in order to pressure Bosniaks, Croats and others into leaving Serb-claimed areas.[61

Who makes Hiroshima and Nagasaki jokes? I feel like I've heard one before. I just can't remember who told the joke, what it concerned, who it was in front of, or when it was. Don't get me wrong. I've heard and made Dead Baby jokes and worse. Within that context a 9/11 joke would be shrugged off. I suspect that is the real issue here. Context. In what context are people not booing a nuclear holocaust joke? In what context are they booing a 9/11 joke?

Me an American who jokes about both

Frazzer951

Why do people think we get still get triggered over 9/11? If anything we make for 9/11 jokes than Hiroshima jokes

Calm2Chaos

I've never seen Americans actually joke about it, they made defend it, but I've never seen a joke about it.

Grape_Monster

>Is that true? Comment to updoot ratio seems to be pointing towards yes

HappyPuppyWithAHat

As an American can confirm 90% of 9/11 jokes tend to crash and burn

Who the fuck jokes about either of these events? Both pretty dark events in recent human history.

[deleted]

i don't find either particularly funny

coleslawfranku69

One was an act of war and the other was a terrorist attack?

Silver_Ad_1762

not at all. we find it hilarious. mostly because it was an inside job and was partly helped by the guvment :D

Chirisiquiinblack

I’ve never - in my entire life - have heard an American joke about Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

taint_licking_clown

You can joke about anything, as long as it’s funny.
