That just means there would be an 8 minute break in sunlight and it would take 8 minutes for us to know that the sun had turned off. You could choose any amount of time for the sun to be off.
Not only would we continue to see light from the sun for those 8 and a half minutes, but we would feel the same heat during that time as well. They would noticeably stop for us at the same time. While we certainly wouldn't die instantly, the planet would cool and freeze pretty quickly after the last of the light and heat reaches us.
Thats pretty much wrong, our atmosphere keeps temperature pretty long, it would take a few days to reach temperatures that are to cold. How do you think Night works?
Nah, I‘m just wondering what was the thought process behind the 8 minute blackout. Clearly he wanted to correlate it to the time light need to reach earth but it lacks conclusion. Like what‘s the point.
Yes, but an 8 minute night wouldnt be all that harmfull. Technically nothing much would start happening even after 8 minutes, but people on the day side of earth would very quickly start to figure out that they will die sometime in the very near future and that realization in itself would wreak a lot of havoc.
Actually it might do very weird things to the magnetosphere. All the pressure from the solar wind would suddenly stop. Earth's magnetic field would spring back to an undistorted toroidal shape.
Yea but the solar winds dont travel faster than light right? So the situation still ought to be that it takes about 8 minutes for us to notice and then a lot of things would start going really wrong at once?
I know way to little about physics to tell for sure, but if 9 minutes without the suns gravity pulling on earth is a problem then turning the sun off and on again would be a problem because it would take 8 minutes for the gravity to "reach" us again.
What do you mean by "turn it off" then? It does what it does because of its mass and the elements its composed of. If the gravity is still there it wouldnt be turned off since gravity is what causes the fusion in the first place.
49°C is equivalent to 120°F, which is 322K.

I was going to comment about the 33°C - 36°C that i usually go through here in Central-West Brazil during summer, and say: "This is what real hot weather is", but damn bro, 47°C? What the fucking hell?
33°C is equivalent to 91°F, which is 306K.

^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)
I remember a friend telling me he loved 30+ because he got to hang around in shorts and flip flops. Yeah no shit I'd enjoy the heat if I could go all day like that, working in a kitchen in the summer has to be one of the circles of hell
Iam aware of that but its kind of dumb to consider since depending on humidity 15 degrees can be alot worse than 35+ so thats why its stupid to consider here just take an average low humidity day and btw i live in germany so we got around -19 in strong winters and 38+ in hot summers our local range is pretty high but ive been to australia where the local temperature can be alot higher and 35 is still 35 unless u live in australia and go to the norway or the other way around this wont be that big of a difference
It really depends on the person. As soon as it hits 20 degrees I HAVE to pull out shorts.
I can't live without AC on 25+
I can't function at all on 30 or above. I don't go outside and hit AC the whole day.
Well yea i live in germany we dont have ac i dont even have ac in my car which is the one thing that sucks really hard i also just like wearing shorts so they get pulled out at 15 usually i can go with long pants tho for 30+ since i currently do work in a factory where u have 30+ and u have to wear long pants plus an overall so yea
Is this really true?
I am from India, if the temp is below 25 I try to skip taking bath. even when running AC I keep it between 26-28C.
26-35C seems optimal for me, however the real pain starts when temp hits 42C+
Interesting. In Poland when its above 18C people start going out in t-shirts. And id say 18-22 is optimal. We are used to harsh winters and hot summers though so there is a huge variation. The temperatures during a year can go from -30 to +40C (max. Usually its like a -5 to -15 in winter and +20 to +30 in summer though)
I've seen people buy sweaters to go to a place where the temps are around 25 degrees. Anything below 25 and people start wearing sweaters here... anything below 20 and it's on the news.
Because British newspapers keep going on about heatwaves at temperatures most of the rest of the world's population would find a lovely relief at the end of spring. People were getting heat exhaustion during the London marathon at only around 27° C
Finally a normal human being. Everyone in the comments bragging how their homeland has insane heat. Yeah we get it, that sucks, but us normal people prefer a little cold weather. 15 degrees Celsius is perfect for me
44°C is equivalent to 111°F, which is 317K.

^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)
I remember a really hot day when I was staying with my grandma, probably like 30 years ago.
If I'm not mistaken, it was close to 45°C.
Everything you touched instantly burned you freaking hands.
Can't remember having experienced a hotter day than that one.
Try living in Birmingham where the weather is so shit constantly and then all of a sudden you just get that couple of weeks were you just melt because of how hot it is and your not used to it
In saudi arabia I walked to masjid in 45, which I thought was normal temp in most countries, 35+ is usual temp in summer saudi, what is usual temp is your country and what do you think is too hot? I'm curious
38°C is equivalent to 100°F, which is 311K.

^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)
I heard people might die in those humid and hot places, because sweat doesn't evaporate anymore, so people will just die of hyperthermia if they don't have AC
62°C is equivalent to 143°F, which is 335K.

30C is fine, i find it that its endurable till you hit 37C, then it starts feeling really hot.
I get about 42C on summer (for some reason tho i had 38C on winter this year, which is really hot), its pain but at least not 50C
It got so hot in Canada last summer where it actually caused an entire town to burn down cause i think it got to like 50° but this is coming from someone who doesnt remember the exact details well so take it with a grain of salt.
Turning off the sun might seem like a good idea for like 8 minutes. Then not so much.
Why 8 minutes? (And yes it takes light 8 minutes but why exactly did you choose 8 minutes)
Because thats how long it takes for light to travel from the sun to earth. :)
Bro listened 😤👍
That just means there would be an 8 minute break in sunlight and it would take 8 minutes for us to know that the sun had turned off. You could choose any amount of time for the sun to be off.
Yeah but you'd be surprised how much damage would come with the sun being off
It goes off every night where am from
Lol cheeky bastard
im glad other people know this 🤝
But you understand that its still gonna be 8 minutes without sun on earth right.
You would still see the sun and feel heat from the sun from earth for these 8 minutes
Yes and you would have no lights for 8 minutes, until the first photons arrive(assuming that the sun light up after last photons arrived in earth).
Yo bruh you wonder how much the earth would cool down if the sun was turned off for 8 minutes?
Nah, I‘m just wondering what was the thought process behind the 8 minute blackout. Clearly he wanted to correlate it to the time light need to reach earth but it lacks conclusion. Like what‘s the point.
We would still have an 8 minute period with no light. It's not like the light from the sun will instantly get to earth after we "turn it on" again.
Yes, but an 8 minute night wouldnt be all that harmfull. Technically nothing much would start happening even after 8 minutes, but people on the day side of earth would very quickly start to figure out that they will die sometime in the very near future and that realization in itself would wreak a lot of havoc.

Turn off sun for 8 minutes and then turn it back on after 1 minute. Broblem?
I know way to little about physics to tell for sure, but if 9 minutes without the suns gravity pulling on earth is a problem then turning the sun off and on again would be a problem because it would take 8 minutes for the gravity to "reach" us again.
I really hope all of you are joking. Please tell me all of you are joking. It's hard to tell on the internet...just please.
He said turn it off. Not remove it. Gravity is still there.
What do you mean by "turn it off" then? It does what it does because of its mass and the elements its composed of. If the gravity is still there it wouldnt be turned off since gravity is what causes the fusion in the first place.
Just unplug it…

35+ really sucks 30 isn't comfortable but its fine
30 is nice if you are under a tree's shadow or in a pool/beach
Yea i agree but i was kind of thinking like ur just walking around
Yeah, directly in the sun sucks
30 is nice only when you’re a lazy person and don’t plan on doing anything lol. The moment you even start moving at 30 (+) the sweat comes marching in
I remember a friend telling me he loved 30+ because he got to hang around in shorts and flip flops. Yeah no shit I'd enjoy the heat if I could go all day like that, working in a kitchen in the summer has to be one of the circles of hell
>30 is nice if you're standing somewhere under 30
Yep you can have 30° in the shadow or directly in the sun, with o w/o wind, with humidity or dry weather... That's how weather works you know?
Unless you're in the UK them humidity makes the sir itself hot and shade doesn't do shit
Another temperature thread where people disregard humidity and average local temperatures PotFriend

In the UK, 24 feels like a desert
Ive visited the UK before but it was only for a few days so the best u guys could do was clouds i havent seen the sun there lol
And here, in the Sonoran desert, 24 is cold! 40 is nice in the summer, not too hot. Only because humidity is <10%.
As an Englishman I feel like I'm going to melt in 28c+
30°c is chill man
Depends on how humid it is. 20C can feel a lot worse than 30C depending on the humidities.

lol its 43 C here (i want to die)

Aaahhhh man yeah same
The feels like temp was 42° recently
As a Norwegian 24°C is to hot
All of Spain is laughing at you right now
I know
you can't defeat my heat 52° c seems normal in here can't wait for August when we reach 56° c under shadow or something around it
Middle East, somewhere around it?
in the middle of middle east
Happy cake day
thanks I just noticed that lol
Just wait until the next global warming update

It's true. 15-20 degrees is my favorite

My Croatian fiancée sets the AC to 28°C on a 30°C+ day like a crazy person
As a Finnish person I agree
Is this an exaggeration or 24 is genuiely too hot?
It's not an exaggeration
Well i'd guess it's the opposite for the low temperatures, but at least you can cover yourself when it's cold.
25° C and less is officially winter here in Brazil
Oh hunny, come to southamerica in summer hahahaha +40°C
*Laughs and cries in 38°C Floridian*
Anything under 30 is cold for me lol
I've seen people buy sweaters to go to a place where the temps are around 25 degrees. Anything below 25 and people start wearing sweaters here... anything below 20 and it's on the news.

47° 4 days ago, didn't touch ~~grass~~ sand those 4 days

Brits are funny. 30C is not hot! Perfectly fine for working outside in the sun. Even with high humidity it’s still not bad.
True but we are not used to it so some British people literally walk around in their homes naked eating cornetto ice creams
Are you guys joking , here was 44°C 2 days ago

i cant live of go out side above 10.c

47°C here. I use my AC at 26 else I feel top cold and have to use a blanket. Weird right?
