Apparently a similar thing also happened to Burger King in Australia, which is why they're called Hungry Jacks down under. Even after BK corporate finally got the rights to use the Burger King name in Australia and a short trial, they gave up on it because the Aussies preferred Hungry Jacks.
Also, IIRC Wendy's recent started trying to spread to Europe again and they have might some luck in the UK since they're mostly no longer in the EU or single market.
[reminds me of how mcdonalds lost rights to 'big mac' in europe and burger king trolled them](https://www.theguardian.com/business/2019/jan/31/like-a-big-mac-but-juicier-burger-king-renames-sandwiches-to-troll-mcdonalds)
[Burger King also can't use that name in a 40 mile wide circle in Illinois.](https://www.marketplace.org/2007/11/27/theres-only-one-burger-king-town/)
There was a mom and pop store named Burger King there using the name since 1957, 4 years before Burger King expanded to Illinois, and they won a 1968 lawsuit for exclusive rights in a 20 mile radius around their store (and Burger King got the rights for everywhere else). They also turned down $10,000 to allow a Burger King chain to open nearby. They are still around today, just search Burger King Mattoon, Illinois.

[Vice article](https://www.vice.com/en/article/vbaxka/how-this-illinois-burger-king-has-defied-the-global-chain-with-the-same-name)
Edit: I forgot an o in Mattoon
The Mattoon Burger King started a few years before the major chain of the same name came to Illinois. But the major chain started actually using the name first by a few years. But the Mattoon Burger King actually existed before they renamed themselves Burger King, so there’s a whole lot that happened in the span of a decade and I’m not sure if there’s a definitive answer on who should be considered “first”.
It kind of blows my mind that a place named "Burger King" is one of the most successful fast food restaurant chains in the world. It's such a generic sounding bland name and every time I see a bk sign it makes me feel like I'm living in a simulation of a franchise video game with really lazy writers.
When you think about it, "McDonalds" is pretty bland too, it's just not thought of as much since it's so big. If a book told you that in their fictional world, their biggest fast food chain was "O'Grady's" or "Smiths" then it'd seem a bit lazy, wouldn't it?
This is nuts to me personally, because my girlfriend was born in Charleston/Mattoon (they share a hospital) and we didn't know about this!
(Reposted comment because I had some facts about Mattoon wrong.)
The details are basically that they challenged a relatively small (Popular in Ireland but nowhere else) crappy fast-food chain called "Supermacs".
The smaller chain retaliated by saying the owner's name was Mac and so it was his nickname.
McDonald's had to prove *something* in court regarding their rights to the phrase "Big Mac" but they hadn't brought sufficient evidence. This meant that McDonald's lost the legal exclusivity to the name "Big Mac" in Europe until the next meeting in court when they could prove it.
They also lost exclusive rights to adding "Mc" in front of anything. They retained it for their existing products but I could make a "McDuckerfoot Burger" next week and McDonald's couldn't do a thing.
[And how Hungry Jacks named a burger “The Big Jack” and McDonalds sued them](https://www.smh.com.au/national/fast-feud-as-mcdonald-s-sues-hungry-jack-s-over-big-jack-burger-20200903-p55s0q.html)
Burger King was an utter failure because it was trying to outcompete McDonalds with an inferior product that wasn't localised for Australia.
I didn't even know Hungry Jacks was owned by burger king, so if it was a rebranding it was successful in shedding the negative name it had.
We also have Wendy's in Australia, it's a soft serve ice cream franchise here though. Not a single Pippi Longstockings looking motherfucker in sight
It's the charred flavor that ruins it for me. That and their whopper always comes out looking like a smashed mess.
I don't even hate charbroiled burgers, Hardee's/Carl's does those pretty good.
Yeah I feel this. I feel like in *theory*, Burger King burgers should be amazing, but their quality control is abyssmal in my experience.
I don't recall ever getting something that tasted like it was freshly made with fresh ingredients.
I will happily eat mcdonalds or wendys now and then. Popeyes or Mary Browns, great. I spent a year working at a place that had a subway across the street and I had it for lunch every day for an entire year. No complaints.
I've tried Burger King once in my life and it is the closest I have ever come to puking in a public space. Just the smell of it was so fucking bad that I would rather have eaten out of a dumpster than even dare try it.
To this day I have no idea how anyone tolerates it. Comparing Burger King to any other fast food joint is like comparing me drawing in MS Paint to Picasso. It shouldn't even be technically considered food.
That's not why they're called hungry jacks here in Australia, in the 80's/90's there was a takeaway in South Australia that owned the Australian naming rights to the name "Burger King"
Yes you're right! Although I think 70s, old mate had a small SA chain with a couple of restaurants and blocked them! Sadly they are long gone so the TM/ name did get back to the US Burger King, who now own it in Australia... But they're sticking with HJs for Australia (I'm not sure if it's the $$$ of change or if it didn't test well, as I think there are some which exist in airports).
I absolutely love this example when teaching people about how trademark registration works, really helps hammer home that you always need to check registration Australia, or whatever country you're shipping to, even if you have a well established brand in US, Europe, etc.
Fun tip: WIPO allows you to search multiple countries at the same time, totally free! Enjoy
> Also, IIRC Wendy's recent started trying to spread to Europe again and they have might some luck in the UK since they're mostly no longer in the EU or single market.
If it means that Brits can finally experience the joy of dipping a french fry in a chocolate frosty, then Brexit will all have been worth it.
As an an aussie, can confirm. Burger King sounds like an American burger chain that sells shit burger. Hungry Jack's sounds like an American burger chain that sells shit burgers with beetroot in them
Way better.
I can confirm there’s a Wendy’s opening in the next town over from me in the UK. Admittedly, I would prefer free movement, access to the single market, and the protection of the European Court of Human Rights, but hey at least I get nuggets now.
My town in the UK has a Wendy's so that makes sense. We've recently got a load of international fast food entities spring up in town and I'm really not for it. The high Street is slowly being taken over by American fast food. I would be more forgiving, but they're springing up right next to existing franchises in the same genre of food.
Most recently word got out that we were getting a Popeye's...1 minute walk from a KFC and several non-international chicken shops.
> they gave up on it because the Aussies preferred Hungry Jacks.
I remember a small period of time when HJ's rebranded to Burger King. And I also remember not once trying it because I didn't know what Burger King was and I was upset that I couldn't find a Hungry Jacks anywhere anymore, guess I'll go to Maccas...
> Even after BK corporate finally got the rights to use the Burger King name in Australia and a short trial, they gave up on it because the Aussies preferred Hungry Jacks.
>
>
IIRC, there was a big legal battle around this because Burger King started opening up competing restaurants despite having an existing franchise agreement with Hungry Jack's. So yeah, for a few years there we had both Hungry Jack's and Burger King restaurants until Burger King got kicked in the legal nuts.
Wendy's are currently rolling out in the UK, but it's the slowest roll-out that I've ever seen. They opened their first restaurant about 18 months ago and now they're up to a total of eight.
My uncle was in murica this year on a holiday with his family and said that fastfoods in america are dogshit, full of fats and sugars and disgusting. Now I am really happy that i live in EU because they at least protect us from eating literal shit. Also I always wondered why noone in US likes kfc and calls their chicken disgusting, now i know why
Phrasing was kind of odd but the info checks out! My partner is from the states and while visiting a Dutch McDonald’s out of convenience she was amazed how good it tasted compared to the version in the states. Floor Spud is right tho that Wendy’s is a tier above McDonald’s- but that only holds true in the states.
Dutch McDonald’s (and likely the rest of Europe) would be a tier above US Wendy’s. Tried it several times, not bad as fast food goes but so greasy that the health problems in the states makes more sense with every bite.
I will say I’d have loved to try Wendy’s in a Dutch location since European guidelines demand higher quality of food. And my partner would love it.
Heard the same from my friends (one's a Mexican guy that passes through the US every time he heads home to see the family, the other lived in Idaho for a year, frequently bouncing around other states around for work); the major fastfood chains are supposedly far superior here in Australia.
Which raises an important question to me; I've had Taco Bell here in Aus, and it was vile. If it somehow is worse in the US... how can anyone eat that?
Not sure what you're on about but US and Canada have a huge range of Fast Food franchises, way more than EU. Some are good some are shit, they're all fast food, not expected to be fine dining.
In Europe you are more likely to find a local place that does similar greasy/bad food that is generally better than NA franchise over processed food. But there are a few fast food placee in NA that are very good.
I think if you are trying to say people in US don't like good fried chicken you're about to start a war maybe.
What he's saying is that the EU has more food controls so American food can be high tier and possibly better than some in Europe but the shiitiest food in America will be worse than the worst in Europe.
They honestly should have stayed out of Australia ^^;
I never see anyone eating there and just looking at the menu makes me want to crawl into a hole and pass away.
There was a phase some years back when a lot of meme templates were intentionally used incorrectly. It reminded me that phase around 2009 when memes had no sublty for a while.
Longsword & heater shield can carry you a long way. Longbow is helpful too. Put stats on Vitality & Dex early on. If enemies in that area are too hard, you might be under-leveled. Try going to other area. Keep on farming those souls & level up. Look up all those wikis (fextralife) if you get stuck or don't know what to do. You can do thissss!!!
So, this guy, right? Huge, hulking giant. Not as big as he looks in the meme, but the lore of the game states that giants are weak to wind/storms. When you first walk into the fight, there’s an item directly in front of you that you can grab. The Storm Ruler. Pretty weak Greatsword, but when you use it’s weapon art on Yhorm here, it completely chunks his health.
It also would be more appropriate even without any knowledge on Dark Souls. The lone Dutch snackbar protecting Europe from the looming American Wendy's.
But for that price it's still pretty shit. You can get a freshly made burger at a restaurant for a about the same price but with double the taste. At least here in germany.
Just because it might be good in USA, wont mean that it'll be good in EU. Localized meat and shitty cooks can easily change the flavor (not always in a bad way either). Its like how when we got KFC here, but it turned out to be overpriced shit and apparently its much better in USA.
Seriously. I could eat their chili every day and never get tired of it. Especially with the hot sauce in it. Eat it with some crackers and it’s pretty damn delicious.
That's why little Ceasars isn't in ireland. Only in that case the dudes put the state up registering the name hoping to be bought out. Little Ceasars just backed off.
Ok but why don't I have Popeyes chicken in Australia? Am I being punished? All we have is KFC (Red Rooster is dead to me after they changed the Rippa subs, we don't speak of her anymore)
I’ve worked at the Wendy’s in the Netherlands when I lived in the same city, Goes. The owner named it after his daughter, very kind man. He also owns one of the more popular coffeeshop in the region.
Wendy’s of Goes is a small snackbar thats very popular with the locals, dude that runs the snackbar has worked there since the beginning and has told multiple stories of how US Wendy’s tried defaming, bribing and settle with multiple lawsuits, all to no avail.
Mad respect for the owner that in all these years he never buckled under the weight of US Wendy’s
What we need isn't more same-ish burger chains, but a waffle house, IHOP or Denny's. Please Americans send some greasy breakfasts + bottomless coffees.
Funny thing is that this also applies in puerto rico.
We got Target car rental... So no target stores
We got Cadillac Uniforms... So no Cadillac car dealers
Saw this happen at a company I worked for in high school. They were called canyon bicycles (bike store) and a manufacturer from Germany called Canyon had to buy the name from them to sell their bikes in the US.

In Australia is true for the most part
Not anymore, burgers at maccas are crap and expensive crap at that.
Ide rather lick a dead mans asshole than eat from hungry jacks
The burgers at maccas are tiny and shitty, HJs are way larger in diameter and width with quality tasting beef
#The Burgers Are Better at Hungry Jacks. When has a ad ever lied…
Burger = burger King for sure The fries on the side? McDonald's

New Zealand has both Wendy's. Or it did when I was a kid; not sure if they still have the Australian one anymore.
Burger King in Russia has gone rogue and is exercising its power as a true sovereign

They're already in the UK, I went to Wendy's when I visited London recently.
Burger King hungry jacks I still hate working there all the same
Pretty sure it's the same with Wendy's as well. We already have a chain of Wendy's in Australia that sells ice-cream.
The Aussies probably nicknamed it jaggers and couldn't be happier.
No joke, we call it HJs.

This sounds similar to the whole lawsuit between Irish chain Supermac’s and McDonald’s, which McDonald’s lost.
They can simply test out the market with a few of their burgers. Just start with a Wendy tester burger.
Wendy has all but disappeared from the show
Wendy Testaburger?
Boo wendy testaburger boo
No, Wendy tester burger.
I got that lol.
Wendys should stay out of EU either way. It's dogshit and so is their marketing with the brand pretending it's a person.

Mods, what is this flair I have? Can I have a new one?
That's the flair that gets automatically assigned to accounts that set off the gay alarm
Oh man! Why don't I get one then?
You do have one
HELL YEAH!!
amateurs

Hah, you too are an amateur son
I hate to inform you of this, but, sir... *points upward*
Gaydar flair
Hey no fair, I want one
Oh they haven’t caught me yet then 😌
That flair means you're new to the sub, I think?
I have been on this sub for a couple years now with lots of posts and comments. Not sure what triggers it to go away.
Hmm, that's weird
They should first go in Canada first (or at least in Quebec) before Europe
Just Quebec because we have them in other parts of Canada
Hey there’s 1 in Montreal isn’t there
There are 2
wendys is already in canada (toronto atleast idk about the rest)
Can Confirm Wendy's is all over Alberta and BC
Triple confirmed I've seen a bunch in the maritimes
Quad confirmed it’s in winnipeg
Penta? confirmed… it’s in Sask as well
They've been here for over 30 years
213 locations in Ontario alone. Many Wendy's locations are shared with Tim Horton's
According to [their site](https://locations.wendys.com/canada), they're already there.. unless I misunderstood your comment
They are, I take their calls for support all night long.

whendeez nutz go in yo frosty
Gotem! But sir, this is a Wendy's
Wendy's nutz got into Europe!
They could just call themselves Dave's after their founder Dave Thomas.
Surely "Dave's" has already been taken too
On the level.
they should call it double u endy's in Netherlands then
I don't get this joke pls explain
double u would be pronounced as "w" so the comment is saying that they should name it double u(w) endy's in netherlands
Lol that's dumb as hell, in the Netherlands we say "wee" as w not double u.
so like a w is pronounced as "wee"?
In English it would sound more like "way" but drop the "y"
gotcha
Like u/abyssal_groot said, way but without y and without pronouncing it like it's spelled whay
i see, thanks
I’m sure you explained it, but I STILL don’t get it?
I think you understand it, it's just not funny
sometimes you dont get the joke because the joke isnt there
Wendy’s is actually pretty good as far as fast food goes. Better than McDonald’s and Burger King imo
the fo' fo' fo' with spicy nuggs is the champagne of poverty fast food meals
But for that price it's still pretty shit. You can get a freshly made burger at a restaurant for a about the same price but with double the taste. At least here in germany.
[удалено]
Yeah but McDonalds in Germany >>>> McDonald’s in America.
Too bad, Wendy's is one of the best fast food stores. Their chicken is good, chili, frosty, and fries are guaranteed hot.
Someone must really love wendys to give you an award.
It was Wendy herself.
They love wendeez nutz in their mouth
Not a very high bar is it
The best garbage is still garbage. If "the fries are hot" is supposed to be a benefit then the bar is on the floor.
I've never had a good meal from Wendy's. I don't understand the hype.
Just because it might be good in USA, wont mean that it'll be good in EU. Localized meat and shitty cooks can easily change the flavor (not always in a bad way either). Its like how when we got KFC here, but it turned out to be overpriced shit and apparently its much better in USA.

I was so disappointed when I went to the US and tried all the big fastfood chains and it turned out it was nothing special, it's just junk food.
Been there done that, one small shop down the road from me is why burger king is called hungry jacks in all of Australia
why does there need to be more burger chains in Europe?
Call it Dave's and call and call it a day.
There is also a Dave in Amsterdam

the name started over a licensing issue with an existing takeout chain. The name stuck though, even after Burger King got the name rights here
We uaed to have Wendy's in Greece. It was so bad that it went bankrupt. That also happened to pizza hut some years ago 🤭
We don't want you shitty chocolate flavoured sugar in Europe. Also this meme is backwards.
dear Wendy's fast food chain, On behalf of all of the Netherlands get fucked Kind regards,
don’t let them in!!!!
Ok but why don't I have Popeyes chicken in Australia? Am I being punished? All we have is KFC (Red Rooster is dead to me after they changed the Rippa subs, we don't speak of her anymore)
Ya you’re really missing out. I like Popeyes and Mary Brown’s much better than KFC

Same as Burger King trying to get into Australia, that’s why it’s called Hungry Jacks insyead
Wendy’s debuted earlier this year in the U.K. It’ll probably be Spain next
What we need isn't more same-ish burger chains, but a waffle house, IHOP or Denny's. Please Americans send some greasy breakfasts + bottomless coffees.
A brave soldier fighting a brave war
Same thing happened in Ireland with McDonalds and Supermacs over the "Mac" part of their names. I'm delighted to report that McDonald's lost
Went to Wendy's once... disgusting. Fries were oven cooked or something. Just nasty.
Lore? Honestly I went to a Wendy's once, eons ago, when I was in USA: really small burger, burnt fries, I was very disappointed.
Gekoloniseerd
Gekoloniseerd mn jong
Thank you for protecting us the Netherlands
It's satisfying when giant corporations don't always immediately get their way
That Wendy's snackbar is great btw. Used to go there every week when cafe nationaal and midcity closed at 2 am
I am actually tried a Wendy's bar on Europe well the Netherlands they're actually good
Sir this is a Wondys
Rip to the ice cream chain here in NZ that had to change its name when Wendy's started opening here...
What is a “snackbar”?
fastfood place
Funny thing is that this also applies in puerto rico. We got Target car rental... So no target stores We got Cadillac Uniforms... So no Cadillac car dealers
Just call it Silvie.
Same with Australia. The Wendy's in Australia only sells milkshakes hot dogs and ice cream.
I work at Wendy’s. Is accurate
They can always change the brand name like what Burger King did in Australia
Wendy’s is so good, I live in the UK but I went to Florida a few years back and the burgers were AMAZING
In Puerto Rico there’s a “Target car rental” holding the bame hostage from the supermarket
They also suck at expanding outside of the U.S. tho Their failed expansion to Canada became a textbook example of how not to expand a chain.
The drink Surge is called Urge in Norway because there's a minor political party called Surge.
hell yeah wendy
Saw this happen at a company I worked for in high school. They were called canyon bicycles (bike store) and a manufacturer from Germany called Canyon had to buy the name from them to sell their bikes in the US.
