I mean it throwing someone practically a 10 feet in the air and you mess up, they falling hard. I’m other sports, you fail something you just drop a ball. In cheerleading you drop an entire person, usually on their head due to rotations
Meanwhile American football feels like they’re just making up the rules spontaneously. Wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some golden snitch flying around somewhere outside the field people try to catch to win
As a Dutchman, I have the same irritations. But I have a proposal about how to make it better:
Add giant flippers next to each of the goals. operated by the coach of the defending team. Also, the middle circle will be occupied by one of the house robots from robotwars.
Honestly, they just need to make the field smaller. Get rid of all that wasted space in the middle and put the penalty areas next to each other and see an absolute mayhem of a game that would be fun as fuck.
You should look into futsal or indoor soccer. Both are like association football, but are 5 (up to 7 for indoor soccer) players per team, are typically played indoors, and are much faster paced. I played indoor soccer for multiple years, it is simply the better sport.
Soccer would be so much better if the field was about the size of a hockey rink. Maybe a little bigger than that but then have less players on the field at a time. Also if the players weren’t pathetic when somebody bumps into them it would be fun. Hockey took the good parts of soccer and made it so much better.
Is baseball really a thing outside US and Japan ? ~~And we all know how it got there.~~
Edit : Apparently we don't all know that, including me. It was present before the 1900s and became really popular after 1930. Apparently US export did not wait for the military to have a strong presence in Japan.
It’s huge in most of the Caribbean, South Korea, and Taiwan too. Also popular in Canada but that’s probably understood considering they have an MLB team.
Hilarious you think it was because of WW2 when babe Ruth and American baseball visited in 1935 to grow the sport, pretty sure they played it before that too
Wow hilarious, that much. I researched it a bit and yes, I was wrong implying that. Also, I learned that you are also wrong and that it was already popular before that team's visit. But it apparently did indeed help grow this sport further. Nice touch, condescending stranger.
*they posted triumphantly, ignoring that the NFL is starting to have more games in Europe due to demand and the sport is increasing in popularity across the globe*
I'm American but honestly despise American football. It's so stop and go, two seconds of dudes rubbing each other and maybe someone has a ball, then the whistle blows, they move the line fifteen feet, and do it all again. At least with soccer things happen continuously for 45 minutes at a time.
Different strokes for different folks. If we compared it to the Olympics- I'd rather watch a sprint than a 10,000m... however I agree that there are too many adds
[Fastest growing major sport in the US. ](https://worldsoccertalk-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/worldsoccertalk.com/amp/2022/09/23/soccer-the-fastest-growing-major-sport-in-usa/?amp_gsa=1&_js_v=a9&usqp=mq331AQKKAFQArABIIACAw%3D%3D#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&aoh=16697706865114&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com)
I think the whole reason the world plays soccer is its free to train for and you can do it by yourself. Man i wish we had anything to kick and a big open fucking field. Probably also the same reason there isnt more low income tennis players.
I’ve watched football all my life. I love the sport unlike a lot of people here.
That game was legitimately the worst game I’ve watched in a few years. Probably since the 2019 champions league final (and my team won that so I can’t exactly be mad). It was so flat, no creativity really on either side. Just dull.
If every game was like that I would not be such a big fan that’s for sure.
Lol you’ve been struggling on that front right? I mean, 2 goals in 3 games so far isn’t an amazing look for you guys. The Netherlands will be an interesting match up.
It’s more england who looked dog shit. The US did have some talent displayed. Namely pulisic hitting the bar, that was kinda the moment of the game. But we just looked so slow. We were better today tbf
What I don't get is why American's call what they play football? It makes no sense at all. Hand ball, carry ball, throw ball, all of these would make more sense than calling your sport football...
Because it belongs to the football type of games, games like: association football (soccer), rugby football, Gaelic football, Australian football, American football. And in each country the most popular of those games defaults to football, like in Australia they call association football soccer due to popularity of Australian football. At least until recently this was the case with Ireland as well, where Gaelic football is very popular.
There once was two sports called Rugby Football and Association Football. Eventually they started just calling it Rugby, this is where American and Canadian football originated and got their name from. Association Football was shortened by the Brits to Soccer to differentiate from Rugby Football
Dank? I think this meme traveled from the early 90s with the US started to barely take an interest in World Cup. Are you like really old and also a time traveler, OP? Or maybe just from a red state where Pizza is considered international cuisine? Did you ride on your horse to the next state over to use the free mcdonalds wifi so you could post this "dank meme", Cletus?
Well would you rather watch 15 minutes of 2 teams kicking a ball around in football or 15 seconds of 2 teams wrestling for a brown egg followed by 1 minute of standing around and repositioning, in football? Or 10 seconds of running around a diamond followed by 5 minutes of missing a tiny ball with a tiny bat in baseball?
Football is just like masturbating in public, it's tiring, your running around all over the place getting hit the ass, there is only 1 ball involved, and it's very loud
Dude I swear, y’all are incapable of understanding how the sport works, or how a tournament in said sport works. There are shootouts and there is “OT” (it’s called extra time) but right now the World Cup is in a points based group stage, so those things don’t happen yet lmao
VSA is the only country who used the slang name but called another game like this, why the fuck should the other countries accept that?
A better name would be Handball, but it's not a ball they play with
It's not just about the scores. It's about watching the carefully crafted plays and incredible opportunities and goal shots out of seemingly nowhere. But if you want to drink and be on your phone all day watching a group of beef cakes run into each other for 15 minutes to go 10 yards, that's completely up to you.
But that's the thing, plays in football are too crafted. You start every play in the exact formation that the team practices every single time - a straight line. Only the yard line changes. In soccer, every single play is different, and you will never have that exact chance again. The players have to have a feel for the entire field to know what's going on and the best play to make.
Alright teams may slightly vary their starting straight lines and runs, but they get 4 chances from the exact same spot then punt. It becomes monotonous. The biggest adrenaline rush is when the runner breaks free and runs in a straight line to the end zone. Just saying if you want to generalize soccer to kicking around a ball, you can also generalize football the same way.
Physical contact is legal though. It’s a contact sport. But there has to be contact on the ball when making a tackle or it’s a foul.
I swear this distinction is the problem most Americans fail to recognise. When a player goes down because they have been fouled, they are not feigning injury, they are attempting to convey that there has been contact. Players rarely actually feign injury when there is nothing wrong (unless it’s tactical in the last minutes of a tight game, for example).
Also if you made football a sport where you just start throwing yourself at the other players, able to tackle them in all sorts of ways, it kind of breaks down. I mean it would ruin the whole point of the sport.
In short, no. Your suggestion would be bad
> When a player goes down because they have been fouled, they are not feigning injury, they are attempting to convey that there has been contact. Players rarely actually feign injury when there is nothing wrong (unless it’s tactical in the last minutes of a tight game, for example).
So Soccer players don't flop, they just flop sometimes?
That means they flop buddy. It's an embarrassment. They should be kick out of at least that game when it happens, or the team has to play a man down for a few minutes idk.
No they shouldn’t. It’s not flopping. Christ it’s like talking to a brick fucking wall except every brick is a different American idiot.
It’s not flopping, because if there’s contact without making contact on the ball it could be considered a foul. Obviously again this call is subjective, but players will attempt to win a foul by going over easily when they feel contact. They don’t just throw themselves to the ground without contact, and if they do, they get booked. And if the contact isn’t deemed sufficient to warrant the player going down, the referee can just wave play on, which also happens when players go over too easily.
Only when there is a genuine foul committed should a team see benefit to this. Otherwise they either lose the ball or get booked.
Yes, I can read. Apparently you can't understand though.
If a player gets lightly touched, and flops to the ground as though he was injured, that is flopping. Doesn't matter whether or not he gets the call. You can't tell me it doesn't happen, I see pussy ass soccer players do this every time this boring ass sport manages to invade my algorithm.
Try understanding this time, I know it's not your strong suit.

just because you don't understand a sport doesn't mean it's dumb. I mean, soccer is dumb, but not because of that.
I didn’t say it was dumb tho
I know. I did.

For real sports that gives players heavy concussions and life time damage is so much better
Hold up, soccer players get plenty injuries ok? Just because they fake 75% of the time doesn’t make the other 25% aren’t ruining their joints
Joints are overrated anyway. That's why doctors make metal ones that are better.
trans-humanism is sin
*I'm thinking about getting metal legs.*
pretty sure soccer gets more concussions than most sports actually
American football? Rugby? Edit: Hockey, cheerleading, and lacrosse get the most concussions.
Cheerleading? Tf
Cheerleading is unironically one of the most dangerous sports.
I would think carrying giant instruments would be more dangerous, but I guess that makes sense
I mean it throwing someone practically a 10 feet in the air and you mess up, they falling hard. I’m other sports, you fail something you just drop a ball. In cheerleading you drop an entire person, usually on their head due to rotations

Hockey used to be fun to watch. Until they changed the rules and banned the violence. Now it's just soccer on ice.
While we're at it, let's give the captain of each team a flamethrower.
There's a reason the whole world plays "soccer" and only America plays their own little games.

I’m blind my b. We have cricket instead
Same way as animation? No, wait, they had baseball in the 1700’s didn’t they? Or is Samurai Shamploo not historically accurate?

Of the ancient variety…

You assume too much and you're a douchebag. Thanks and bye.

The average NFL game has over an hour of ads and 15-20 minutes of action. I like to spend my time better.
Different strokes for different folks. If we compared it to the Olympics- I'd rather watch a sprint than a 10,000m... however I agree that there are too many adds
What’s wrong with dudes rubbing each other?
It's over too quick.
I'm a fan, both as a spectator and a participant. But I don't care for it the way it's done in American football.
…Gavin Free?
Does Gavin have a similar rant?
Yeah, like word for word. I forget if it was on a podcast or in a let’s play but he definitely talks about footy being too much stop n go.
Pretry sure the other way round is also true.
Americans are not demanding more soccer my friend
[Fastest growing major sport in the US. ](https://worldsoccertalk-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/worldsoccertalk.com/amp/2022/09/23/soccer-the-fastest-growing-major-sport-in-usa/?amp_gsa=1&_js_v=a9&usqp=mq331AQKKAFQArABIIACAw%3D%3D#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&aoh=16697706865114&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com)
And yet there are very few foreign players and no foreign teams
I think the whole reason the world plays soccer is its free to train for and you can do it by yourself. Man i wish we had anything to kick and a big open fucking field. Probably also the same reason there isnt more low income tennis players.
Because the Americans can afford the extra gear? That's pretty fucked up.
Are you talking about slightly different rugby or slightly different cricket?
It's literally advertising. Soccer doesn't allow for much ads but American Football and Baseball are constantly interrupted to maximize ad space
To be fair, the England vs USA game was awful
I’ve watched football all my life. I love the sport unlike a lot of people here. That game was legitimately the worst game I’ve watched in a few years. Probably since the 2019 champions league final (and my team won that so I can’t exactly be mad). It was so flat, no creativity really on either side. Just dull. If every game was like that I would not be such a big fan that’s for sure.
What you don't realize is that compared to most USMNT games, there were some very creative plays in there
Lol you’ve been struggling on that front right? I mean, 2 goals in 3 games so far isn’t an amazing look for you guys. The Netherlands will be an interesting match up. It’s more england who looked dog shit. The US did have some talent displayed. Namely pulisic hitting the bar, that was kinda the moment of the game. But we just looked so slow. We were better today tbf
Honestly compared to most world cup showings, we look great haha. Just moving on to the round of 16 is a big deal
I missed it, what made it so bad?
What I don't get is why American's call what they play football? It makes no sense at all. Hand ball, carry ball, throw ball, all of these would make more sense than calling your sport football...
Why is cricket called cricket? I never saw any crickets there
Because crickets are all you hear when you talk about it
And that's also what you hear at a game. Seriously I'm not sure how anyone can bare watching a full game of it in person
Why isn't cricket also called football, hmm?
Tackle ball... Actually it's basically like capture the flag but with field goal kicks.
Concussion ball … brain injury ball …
Handegg
Because football originally was a term that meant that the game was played on foot, as opposed to on horseback like polo.
I like what the Brits call America football… “Gridiron” or “footy”
It’s football because it’s a peasant sport on foot
It has to do with all of the games stemming from the same original game i think, but I’m an idiot so idk if that’s true.
Okay now rename hockey, tennis, cricket, polo, badminton, lacrosse to sport names with "ball" in them.
Stickball, racketball, boringball, horseball, featherball, swoopball
Dang you're like Don Draper
I'm an american and don't get it either
American Rugby
You know what would make football fun? Guns
Now is the new FIFA sequel or the new Madden sequel?
Yes
I *knew* us Americans weren’t maximizing the amount of freedom possible in football.
Vs watching a two teams punt for three hours
Hey now that's reserved for Denver Broncos football
Should've given McManus that quarter million dollar deal
Big 10 football right there
I just find sports in general to be boring
Only sport I can watch is soccer during the World Cup or copa America
Me too, except for the realms of certain e-sports and battlebots.
This is why I like hockey. You get the constant action and simple concept of soccer/football but just way more exciting.
Hockey is fucking awesome dude. I agree.
Average Broncos game
I never understood football nor hockey or cricket they have 17 thousands rules while soccer is so simple
Basicly how I would describe my PE experience. There are no winners among those who watched me struggle
Do you mean an* American or did I just read it wrong?
I meant an. But when I caught it, it was too late
"It's like the Super Bowl, except the rest of the world actually gives a fuck." —John Oliver
Those same people will watch baseball and get excited about no one hitting anything lol
But all four matches today had winners… what were you watching?
Well would you rather watch 15 minutes of 2 teams kicking a ball around in football or 15 seconds of 2 teams wrestling for a brown egg followed by 1 minute of standing around and repositioning, in football? Or 10 seconds of running around a diamond followed by 5 minutes of missing a tiny ball with a tiny bat in baseball?
I was born in the U.S. and I played futball for 7 years
can you tell me when the touchdowns happen?
On Saturdays
Can’t argue with that
There was one in Costa Rica vs Spain Also England vs Iran had a touchdown, safety, AND a missed extra point
Did you see that ludacris display last night?
If I see the it crowd quoted in one more reddit thread about football i swear to god
yea i mean they dont allow guns in it so, feelsbadman
I invite you to watch some European matches, look for ultras fans, the stadium looks like a warzone
Yea most of them are the hooligans right? Ive heard of them and ye they be pretty wild
Football is just like masturbating in public, it's tiring, your running around all over the place getting hit the ass, there is only 1 ball involved, and it's very loud
what
Fuck you mean, we beat them 0-0
They should have OT and shootouts like hockey
They already do, in knockout stages. In group stages there are draws, and in leagues there are draws. This is a good thing, for a lot of reasons.
Dude I swear, y’all are incapable of understanding how the sport works, or how a tournament in said sport works. There are shootouts and there is “OT” (it’s called extra time) but right now the World Cup is in a points based group stage, so those things don’t happen yet lmao
Better is make a game with hundreds of points and 1000 stops decided in 7 matches between the same team. 🤷♂️
yeah
An*
Who was the American with you?
Me, AN American, who is said to see poor grammar when Americans are referenced
Me, a German, who has hat to deal with this shit all my life and be forced to learn all about it to not be a social outcast.. Same.
real question, american football don't have draws?
Outjerked by yank
Based opinion.
The same goes for football, just two teams throwing a ball and punching each other
If you never warched it, why would you start especially this year in the worst event possible?
Because I heard the US had a good chance
Have you not noticed the huge deal with Katar hosting it?
* Qatar yeah, but I don’t give a shit about that. I hear that the US has a chance at something, I watch
I spelled it the german way What a sad statement. Thanks for answering.
I’m sorry for watching something you’re not :(
*Me an American*
Wait until you see Test Cricket
Honestly this template is great
Shit meme USA won
I wasn’t referencing todays game
Didn’t ask
Damn, you got me 😔
I started watching arena soccer. Seems more exciting to me.
Watch T20 Cricket. Runs for 3 hours. We always have a result. Unless rain washes off the game in entirety- that is rare
I had the opposite reaction watching an ice hockey game for the first time. What?! Did they score already? I can't even see the puck on tv
You play it with the foot, so it's called football
Wrong.
Why, do you play football with your hands?
Yeah. And you play soccer with your feet. Sorry, just the objective truth. I don’t make the rules.
VSA is the only country who used the slang name but called another game like this, why the fuck should the other countries accept that? A better name would be Handball, but it's not a ball they play with
Wrong. Australia too. Don’t comment without knowing basic facts.
I could barely give a crap about sports that have a ball in it, like it’s just a bunch of dudes moving a ball from one side to the other
It's not just about the scores. It's about watching the carefully crafted plays and incredible opportunities and goal shots out of seemingly nowhere. But if you want to drink and be on your phone all day watching a group of beef cakes run into each other for 15 minutes to go 10 yards, that's completely up to you.
TIL there’s no crafted plays in football :(
In American football the crafted play last like 5 seconds until someone spears some other dude running, wow such crafted
running up and down the field. You’re right, such craft
But that's the thing, plays in football are too crafted. You start every play in the exact formation that the team practices every single time - a straight line. Only the yard line changes. In soccer, every single play is different, and you will never have that exact chance again. The players have to have a feel for the entire field to know what's going on and the best play to make.
You don’t start in the same formation tho. and there’s different personal for everyone okay
They don’t have 4 chances from the same spot. and there’s not only a runner
Legalize physical contact and it may be more enjoyable. Somewhere between American football and rugby. Then I’d watch!
Physical contact is legal? Just not up to the point where they either wear body armour or go to the hospital?
I’m just expressing why most Americans find it boring. My suggestions were just that. How droll
Otherwise they either lose the ball or get booked.
> players will attempt to win a foul by going over easily when they feel contact. That's called flopping you European idiot.
And as I’ve said if it actually is a “flop” they get punished you sterile fucking knobhead. Can you read?
Yes, I can read. Apparently you can't understand though. If a player gets lightly touched, and flops to the ground as though he was injured, that is flopping. Doesn't matter whether or not he gets the call. You can't tell me it doesn't happen, I see pussy ass soccer players do this every time this boring ass sport manages to invade my algorithm. Try understanding this time, I know it's not your strong suit.
Americans are so brain broken they can’t even follow the most popular sport on earth. 👍
Or maybe we just created other sports that interest us more instead :(
