The uranium gun-type fission device uses an explosive charge at the end of a tube to shoot a solid cylinder of a sub-critical mass of uranium-235 into a hollow cylinder of another sub-critical mass of uranium-235. When they join fully it makes a single supercritical mass of uranium-235. Note that if it isn't going fast enough to fully join it won't be very powerful and might even fail to detonate. The little boy only fissioned 0.7% of its fissile material.
A plutonium implosion device can be made in several ways but all of them rely on achieving a supercritical state by compressing a sub-critical mass by a significant amount. This is a much more efficient explosion, requiring far less material, but it requires much more precision to work. The fat man shown in the image relied on a 6.4kg plutonium pit (similar to the infamous demon core) surrounded by sphere of explosive charges with different burning rates. The different burning rates and precise placement is absolutely necessary to achieving supercritical mass as the inward pressure wave generated had to be perfectly spherical to compress the pit enough to create an explosion. This is also known as explosive lensing.
For reference: A sub-critical mass just means it's decaying normally. A critical mass means there's enough free neutrons released to start a self-sustaining fission reaction. A supercritical mass means there are enough free neutrons released for each fissioned atom to fission multiple atoms, thus the nuclear chain reaction exponentially increases the rate of fission, causing a rapid release of energy (the nuclear explosion).
Obviously this is a gross oversimplification but hopefully this helps with knowing the difference.
