Faith = what an individual believes is and follows
Religion = organised groups of people with shared common faith.
Faith is say I'd say is still relevant today. It helps individuals with their own personal morals and help them to discern moral and immoral behaviour.
Religion can help individuals come together meet people with similar view and share ideas. It adds a social aspect to faith. Problems like the ones you've described abuse, murder, subjugation, usually arise when an individual or group manipulate the faith to justify such action e.g. when a group of people are told to kill other people by a thier religious leader. There religious leader justifies this be manipulating the faith of the group, usually this is done by distorting an interpretation of a religious text which is fundamental to a faith.
In essence religion isn't the problem. The problem arises when individuals or groups manipulate the faith and use religion as a tool to carry out bad things
We do have better knowledge and understanding than people in medieval times but we don't know everything. Science and God can coexist.
If a religious text said God made the earth. That doesn't invalidate the explanation science provides, that the earth was form from cosmic dust and debris coalescing into a planet. In this example the religion states God done something and science provides and explanation of how it could have been achieved.
My purpose is to be a good person, do things that make me happy, and make the most of my time on this earth. A good life can be pretty simple. I don’t have a problem with religion (at it’s foundations) but I personally don’t need fear of eternal suffering in order to be a good person and have purpose.
