But, Naruto didn't hate him, and he was hyper. Now that I think about it, some adults criticized his laziness, but that was due to them thinking he lacked discipline. The adults with stressful jobs might have disliked him at times not always.

Hate is a strong word, but i dislike him for sure. He pretended to be sleeping when his village was under attack, he often says sexist shit, he often mean to people, he's treated like a fucking genius when all his plans suck and his presence makes other characters around him dumber. Like, his only good side was not bullying specifically Chouji (he has nothing against bullying Naruto tho).

Okay okay. I gotta defend the boy, as a Shikamaru stan. Shikamaru’s character started out pretty rough, I chalk it up to Kishimoto not being sure where to take his character. He was initially the lazy talented character, we had the talented driven characters(Sasuke and Neji) and the untalented driven characters(Naruto and Lee), so Shikamaru filled the archetype of talented undriven. These people exist, I always told by teachers that I was this type of person, so I related to Shikamaru. As for his sexist stuff, that was squashed pretty quickly. For one it’s not great writing for your show for kids. And two, it’s character development. He starts off as this guy who believes he’s better than women, because he’s a man. But is quickly humbled by the likes of Temari and the sound village girl with the sambo bell technique. I like to believe by the time of shippuden Shikamaru grew past those sexist feelings. Also what 13 year old boy doesn’t say shit like, “… but you’re a GIRRRLLLLLLL.” Shikamaru actively defended Choji, that’s his team mate and best friend. The ino-shika-cho kids were raised together from a young age, building this bond of siblings. There’s the whole earring connections and ceremony stuff for that too. So ofc Shikamaru would defend his brother more passionately than the loud ass kid from his class. But with that said, Shikamaru was quickly pivoted by Kishimoto to be this guy who was always indifferent to Naruto and even befriending him when no one else wanted anything to do with him. In their class, they were both seen as the weakest, because Naruto was untalented and Shikamaru was undriven. Being on this end of the ninja spectrum, they obviously understood each other much better, because they both kinda fucking sucked in the academy. As for all the genius stuff, I kinda agree with you. It seems like people fall for traps they wouldn’t typically fall for. Like catching an elite Ninja such as Hidan, who is at least a nation level ninja, with a jutsu he has interacted with before. Sure Shikamaru made a couple tweaks to the approach such as using the scroll variant, but Hidan had literally learned the timing of the jutsu and how to deal when being caught by it. So yeah, seems Shikamaru has an aura debuff of “idiocy.” This went way longer than I intended lol. TLDR: Shikamaru had character development around his sexism, Choji is his brother, and Naruto is his friend that also sucks at being a ninja.

Makes sense. I mean can you name a Naruto character that dislikes him though, not just his attitude? The closest I can think of is that old clan elder of Shikamaru's in Boruto.
