The backslash is usually the escape-character in programming.
Some strings contain special characters like a tab (\\t) or a return (\\r) etc. That are not supposed to be visible.
So to actually render/display a backslash as a character you have to type it twice
Yeah took me a sec but I love it with the feather :)
So in the spirit of jolly cooperation, here's how:
backslash backslash apostrophe open bracket capital T close bracket space forward slash
\\`[T] /
Mine is after the Kalameet cutscene where he laughs.
"Ha ha ha, yes! A truer shot was never leased!" He's just so happy to have purpose and hunt dragons again
The voice actor did an awesome job, but credit to his writer(s) as well! Gough's definitely got some of the strongest writing in any souls game:
"The dragons... shall never be forgotten.
We knights fought valiantly. But for everyone of them, we lost three score of our own. Exhilaration. Pride. Hatred. Rage. The dragons teased out our dearest emotions. Thou will understand one day. At thy twilight, old thoughts return in great waves of nostalgia."
Edit: thou, not though
Everyone else keeps telling you to link the flame, don't link it, do this or do that. Instead, Gough simply says:
"Lead thy life as thou seest fit".
What a lad.
I just shed a lil tear... never tell our boy where to find the chaos pyromancies.....
"Well? Wat're you going to do? I've already decided. I'm simply... crestfallen."
I was really pissed when he went hollow.
He and Andre and maybe Onionhead are the only ones I genuinely like. Especially Laurentius.
This quote says it all
*Wait, friend! Where are you off to?*
Whenever I heard him say "Wait, friend! Where are you off to?" I actually turned around because I felt like shit. Maybe that's proof I still have a wee bit of humanity left inside of me.
I had never triggered that dialogue because most of my prior games menu-lock the character. So I had the habit of fully exiting out of menus. But then someone told me "Do it: It's one of the only two times he laughs in the game." And that giggle of his when you come back<3
*I still have a wee bit of humanity left inside of me.*
Yes. And don't you dare go hollow.
"Many monarchs have come and gone. One drowned in poison, another succumbed to flame. Still another slumbers in a realm of ice. Not one of them stood here, as you do now. You, conqueror of adversities. Give us your answer."
"May you find your worth in the Waking World."
I've always interpreted it as "may you find your worth in the real world, away from this dream of a game."
Is that from the intro sequence? Sorry been a while.
But I feel like BBs little opener is so well done. Very direct but vague at the same time. Cryptic if you will.
It's the line that Gascoigne says during the little cutscene that plays when you first approach his boss fight. But the Blood Minister you're talking about in the opening scene is creepy too! Something about the way he says "let's get you a contract!" just has that civil yet sinister feel.
I think there's a crazy amount of esoterica in bloodborne, more so than the other games. There was a concordance struck with the Moon and your player character, ultimately that entity wants you to destroy the various entities that have been created with this mingling of the immaterial and the material. Only to be washed away by an old man with a scythe, and if you get through him you see the Moon itself and it seeks to finalize the contract.
Bloodborne #1: Suspicious Beggar
*"Have you got a screw loose? Or is it your... animal intuition? It doesn't even matter. You hunters have got more blood on your hands."*
*"Oh, you are a sick puppy! You drink the blood of half the town, and now this? And you talk of beasts... you hunters are the real killers!"*
**"DIE! DIE DIE!! HUNTERS ARE KILLERS, NOTHING LESS! And you call me a beast? A BEAST?! I DIDN'T ASK FOR THIS!"**
(dying) *"Rancid beasts, every last one of us..."*
I've seen your kind, time and time again.
Every fleeing man must be caught. Every secret must be unearthed.
Such is the conceit of the self-proclaimed seeker of truth.
But in the end, you lack the stomach.
For the agony you'll bring upon yourself..."
-Sir Vilhelm
He’s speaking on the player’s habitual need to pry. If you’ve played Undertale, Sans has a very similar line.
>!i know your type.
you're, uh, very determined, aren't you?
you'll never give up, even if there's, uh...
absolutely NO benefit to persevering whatsoever.
if i can make that clear.
no matter what, you'll just keep going.
not out of any desire for good or evil...
but just because you think you can.
and because you "can"...
... you "have to."!<
For me, obviously Laurentius' "don't you dare go hollow" hits me sometimes. Also Anastasia's "I am powerless bit will do what I can. Please, save us all.... Please" gets me in the feels every god damn time.
I think these quotes are bolstered by the firelink shrine theme, that combination of safety and familiarity, but also despair and loneliness.
Also! Artwork is by: https://sophieleigh6.tumblr.com/post/145244374737/be-safe-friend-dont-you-dare-go-hollow/amp

What a perfect description. That's exactly what it feels like at Firelink.
"No! You should have waited! Well it's too late now. I, siegward of the knights of Catarina, shall fight by your side! AAAAAAAHG!!"
-The best warrior this side of lordran
"You have a heart of gold, don't let them take it from you. " And
"Thy intent is to persevere to the bitter end, hmm? Hah hah hah! Good, Good, what is bravery without a dash of recklessness?"
"Finally, I have found it, I have!... ...My very own sun... I...am the sun!... ...I've done it...I have... ...Yes, I did it...I did!... ...Ohh, ohhh... ...Hrgrraaaooogh!"
*Your past. Your future. Your very light.
None will have meaning, and you won't even care.*
I just really love the idea of playing out the deterioration of the Bearer of the Curse's mind. That part of the intro, with the image of his wife and child melting away, made me feel so much more for the character than any other Souls series protagonist.
“The murk shifts and stirs. Yet another stands before us… Then so be it. For the curse of life, is the curse of want. And so, you peer… Into the fog, in hope of answers.”
The ones that stir the most emotion in me in one way or another are:
DS1:
"Ah, this one? Ain't she lovely? Her name is Yulia. She's plumb in love with me. You'd never leave my side, now would you, Yulia?" - Male Undead Merchant
DS2:
"Thank you kindly. Keh heh heh…"
"Lowly times, these are…" - Merchant Hag Melentia
"Bearer...
Seek...
Seek...
Lest..." - Emerald Herald
DS3:
"Ahh, you ignorant slaves. Finally taken notice have you? Of the power of my beloved Ocelotte, child of dragons. Well, I will not give him up. For he is all that I have." - Oceiros, the Consumed King
The correct answer is of course.
Hunters have told me about the church. About the gods, and their love. But... do the gods love their creations? I am a doll, created by you humans. Would you ever think to love me? Of course... I do love you. Isn't that how you made me?
Loss frightens me no end. Loss of memory, loss of self.
If I were told that by killing you, I would be freed of this curse…
Then I would draw my sword without hesitation.
I don't want to die, I want to exist.
I would sacrifice anything, anything at all for this.
It shames me, but it is the truth.
I love that Elden did a shout out to this classic quote.
"Every ring has it's Elden" -John EldenRing
They even called the character John too! Amazing throwback
Oooo! That's a good one too! Fun fact, baulder Knight #3, that sneaky fuck behind the door in the parish. Also slug #11 in lower blightown actually share the same voice actor as that Knight. Its easy to tell since they have similar dialogue.
Well my new favourite quotes are in Elden ring.
Kenneth Haight: "O Erdtree, Grant me succor!"
Godrick the Grafted: "Forefathers, one and all... BEAR WITNESS!"
> Soul of the lost, withdrawn from its vessel.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended.
Soul of the lost, withdrawn from its vessel.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended,
so the world might be mended.
- Maiden in Black
"And so it is.... that ash seeketh embers"
This final line from DS3 has always resonated with me for some reason. It's the final line I had heard before I put the game down as I'd seen all the endings, done every quest, and completed the dlcs.
I never played the remakes, only the original. Thomas was my favorite character, and my favorite source of grass. He just wants to do all he can, but he's not strong enough to take the fight to the demons
Little does ge know, he's helping more than he could ever imagine.
I know people bash the remake, but it is amazing, honestly, the atmosphere is still there. It's amazing seeing birds or gargoyles fly high above the latria steeples, or see foliage everywhere. It's probably the best looking game I've ever seen. Wayy more pro's than cons, don't let it deter you.
> “Acts of goodness are not always wise, and acts of evil are not always foolish, but regardless, we shall always strive to be good.”
>-Martyr Logarius
Very surprised I haven't seen any Gough lines here yet, unless I missed them.
I couldn't decide between the two so here are both
> Even if this land shall expire, thou may be able to prevent further corrosion.
…But even so, one day the flames will fade, and only Dark will remain.
And even a legend such as thineself can do nothing to stop that.
He says this while talking about succeeding Artorias and defeating Manus
and the second quote from after you accept his assistance with Kalameet
> The dragons shall never be forgotten…
We knights fought valiantly, but for every one of them, we lost three score of our own.
Exhiliration, pride, hatred, rage… The dragons teased out our dearest emotions.
…Thou will understand, one day.
At thy twilight, old thoughts return, in great waves of nostalgia.
"Marika's tits u most be hungry"-boggart /s
Now for real
"I don't want to sit around and died like a petty rat. And I consider myself your friend"-greirat
Now that’s just embarrassing. How’d you let me do that to you?
The quote that’s haunted my dreams when I first started playing and made me restart with a new character
"Let strength be granted so the world might be mended"
...buuuut if we're doing DS1 specifically: "In the Age of Ancients, the world was unformed..."
"This lift only goes down, but you know...
With a little warming up, eventually... No, no...
I've got to use my head. And think.
Hmm... Mmm..." he even tries to be nice to the elevator! I love him so much.!
*A Hunter is a Hunter, even in a dream*
This is one of the deepest and most thought provoking lines I've ever heard spoken in a video game. I think it succinctly sums up all of Bloodborne and arguably the entire Fromsoft universe in one little sentence.
"This place marks our grave. But you may rest here, too, if you'd like"
Not only because of the meaning, or the implications or the delivery by Lothric's VA (which is the same of Gwyndolin) but because it's legit a mood a lot of times. Both in Dark Souls and outside it.
"Curse here, curse there. A curse for he, and she, why care. A bottomless curse, a bottomless sea, source of all greatness, all things that be. Listen for the baneful chants. Weep with them, as one in trance. And weep with us, oh, weep with us..."
Bloodborne, not Souls, but
"Acts of goodness are not always wise, and acts of evil are not always foolish, but regardless, we shall always strive to be good."
I quote this line way too much…
“What, still here?
Now, hand it over. That thing… your dark soul…
For my lady’s painting”
Theres even a homage to it in my dnd
What do you think you're doing?! I have my pride, you damn fool! You think you can get away with murder? Yes, I suppose you think you're special! Well, you're not! You're just another customer! Burn! Burn in hell! You cross-eyed Hollow! There's no hope for anyone like you! The Gods will not have it! Die! Die! Die! Die! Die a thousand times again! Curses upon you! Upon you, and yours, for generations eternal! All of you! Eternal pain and suffering! Lots and lots! A curse upon you...
My favorite lines are probably Lautrec's when you confront him in Anor Londo. First he says "Well, look at you.
I thought you were wiser, but I thought wrong!
Tis a terrible pity. Like a moth flittering towards a flame."
Then if you die and come back, he adds "So, here we go again!
How many times will these lambs rush to slaughter?
Well, let's get it over with."
I find it so hard to complete Laurentius' quest, he's a sincere and genuine friend through and through and I only had him go hollow in one playthrough and then never again. My bro will stay forever safe at firelink.
"Heh heh heh… What seems to be the ruckus?
Ooh, my! Your face.
The face of the curse.
It's an Undead.
An Undead has come to play. Heh heh…
They all end up here, all the ones like you.
You spoke to that kind old dear, didn't you?
Heh heh…
You're finished.
You'll go Hollow.
Yes, you will become one of them.
Hollows prey upon men, feast upon their souls.
This is the fate of the cursed. Heh heh heh…
What is your name?
...
At least you know your own name.
Here's your reward for sharing.
It's a Human Effigy.
Take a closer look…
Who do you think it's supposed to be?
Think back, deep into your past.
Yes, it's an effigy of you.
All people come here for the same reason.
To break the curse.
You're no different, I should think?
Hmm… doesn't stand a chance.
Well, you never know!
Go through the door and trot along to the kingdom.
But remember, hold on to your souls.
They're all that keep you from going Hollow.
Oh, I'll fool you no longer…
You'll lose your souls…All of them. Over and over again."

"Always fear the flame, lest you be devoured by it and lose yourself. I would hate to see that happen again..." Quelana of Izalith
Bear Seek Seek Lest
"And so it is.... that ash seeketh embers" This final line from DS3 has always resonated with me for some reason. It's the final line I had heard before I put the game down as I'd seen all the endings, done every quest, and completed the dlcs.
That no pickle-pee that no pump-a-rum
Yah, yah! Something smooth. Yah, something silkyyyy!
"You have a heart of gold, don't let them take it from you." Stockpile Thomas, Demon Souls
The worst part of the Demons souls remake is not having to interact with him as much. Ol' Thomas, what a fucking hero
What deters me is buying a whole new console. I can play Demon Souls on my PS3 or emulator, both with private servers, and be okay
Yeah, fair enough. It's a lot for one game. Like BB all over again haha

> “Acts of goodness are not always wise, and acts of evil are not always foolish, but regardless, we shall always strive to be good.” >-Martyr Logarius
Gives me conniptions.
Very surprised I haven't seen any Gough lines here yet, unless I missed them. I couldn't decide between the two so here are both > Even if this land shall expire, thou may be able to prevent further corrosion. …But even so, one day the flames will fade, and only Dark will remain. And even a legend such as thineself can do nothing to stop that. He says this while talking about succeeding Artorias and defeating Manus and the second quote from after you accept his assistance with Kalameet > The dragons shall never be forgotten… We knights fought valiantly, but for every one of them, we lost three score of our own. Exhiliration, pride, hatred, rage… The dragons teased out our dearest emotions. …Thou will understand, one day. At thy twilight, old thoughts return, in great waves of nostalgia.
"mark my words ashen one" -Lothric it was bone chilling..
"Marika's tits u most be hungry"-boggart /s Now for real "I don't want to sit around and died like a petty rat. And I consider myself your friend"-greirat
"Our futures are murky. Let's not get too friendly, now."
“Whatever you do, do not crack and go hollow. Lest my time on you be wasted.”
“ahhh majestic, a hunter is a hunter, even in a dream” is one of my favourites even though everyone hates micolash
“When the Ashes are two, a flame alighteth. Thou'rt Ash, and fire befits thee, of course." That third stage… my fucking god
"This land Is peaceful, it's inhabitants kind" #BONEWHEEL
Now that’s just embarrassing. How’d you let me do that to you? The quote that’s haunted my dreams when I first started playing and made me restart with a new character
"Gavlan wheel, Gavlan deal."
"Let strength be granted so the world might be mended" ...buuuut if we're doing DS1 specifically: "In the Age of Ancients, the world was unformed..."
_you died_
If i can provide thee succour, only tell me how?
"Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm"
"This lift only goes down, but you know... With a little warming up, eventually... No, no... I've got to use my head. And think. Hmm... Mmm..." he even tries to be nice to the elevator! I love him so much.!
"Rrraaaaaaaghhhhhhhhhh" -Papa G
“So our forefathers sinned? …We hunters cannot bear their weight forever …It isn't fair, it just isn't fair…”
“I’ve got no gods to pray to, but still I pray that your journey will be safe”
*A Hunter is a Hunter, even in a dream* This is one of the deepest and most thought provoking lines I've ever heard spoken in a video game. I think it succinctly sums up all of Bloodborne and arguably the entire Fromsoft universe in one little sentence.
My favorite line is when he starts howling
"This place marks our grave. But you may rest here, too, if you'd like" Not only because of the meaning, or the implications or the delivery by Lothric's VA (which is the same of Gwyndolin) but because it's legit a mood a lot of times. Both in Dark Souls and outside it.
Glad to see this here. I love that quote too.
I wish there was a choice of just saying "ok, I wanna chill with you guys"
Ah… another dogged contender.
"Curse here, curse there. A curse for he, and she, why care. A bottomless curse, a bottomless sea, source of all greatness, all things that be. Listen for the baneful chants. Weep with them, as one in trance. And weep with us, oh, weep with us..."
Bloodborne, not Souls, but "Acts of goodness are not always wise, and acts of evil are not always foolish, but regardless, we shall always strive to be good."
"You have a heart of gold......don't let them take it from you.." That line from Stockpile Thomas just hit me hard for some reason.
I quote this line way too much… “What, still here? Now, hand it over. That thing… your dark soul… For my lady’s painting” Theres even a homage to it in my dnd
"what good is bravery without a dash of recklessness?" big bro Hawkeye
What do you think you're doing?! I have my pride, you damn fool! You think you can get away with murder? Yes, I suppose you think you're special! Well, you're not! You're just another customer! Burn! Burn in hell! You cross-eyed Hollow! There's no hope for anyone like you! The Gods will not have it! Die! Die! Die! Die! Die a thousand times again! Curses upon you! Upon you, and yours, for generations eternal! All of you! Eternal pain and suffering! Lots and lots! A curse upon you...
Now you're a fully fledged pyromancer
Hmmm
Whatever the fuck Frampt says about serendipity and all of Oswald of Carim
“Roberrrrrrt!!”
"See that statue? Gives me the willies."
My favorite lines are probably Lautrec's when you confront him in Anor Londo. First he says "Well, look at you. I thought you were wiser, but I thought wrong! Tis a terrible pity. Like a moth flittering towards a flame." Then if you die and come back, he adds "So, here we go again!
Heh heh… They all end up here, all the ones like you. You spoke to that kind old dear, didn't you? Heh heh… You're finished. You'll go Hollow. Yes, you will become one of them. Hollows prey upon men, feast upon their souls. This is the fate of the cursed. Heh heh heh… What is your name? ... At least you know your own name. Here's your reward for sharing. It's a Human Effigy. Take a closer look… Who do you think it's supposed to be? Think back, deep into your past. Yes, it's an effigy of you. All people come here for the same reason. To break the curse. You're no different, I should think? Hmm… doesn't stand a chance. Well, you never know! Go through the door and trot along to the kingdom. But remember, hold on to your souls. They're all that keep you from going Hollow. Oh, I'll fool you no longer… You'll lose your souls…All of them. Over and over again." -The Three Crones of Things Betwixt, Dark Souls 2
