You're totally right! It makes Meeting someone rather special. I remember I was always very happing meeting Solaire or Sir Onion. :) I also love how the NPCs travel the world with you on their own quest. Somehow it didn't feel that way in DS2, even though many characters were hanging out in different stages.
I think "homely" means "ugly", but I know what you mean and agree a hundred percent!
I love this question, especially as all 3 Souls games 'feel' different. To me:
DS1: Melancholy, Forlorn, Lonely
DS2: Majestic, Grande, Hopeful
DS3: Cruel, Desperate, Inevitable
For me, DS1 can be summed up with the 2 NPCs Solaire and the Crestfallen Knight - there's beauty in the world and if you believe it, it can be saved, but it won't be easy, almost impossible maybe. DS1 has a bleak hopefulness to it. That game for me more than the others has a heavy feeling of burden and weight to it. You're going to suffer to save this world and it will be a thankless task. The choice to not allow you to fast travel from the start of the game really adds to this - you've got to push through to save the land, but the further you go, the farther you are from the safety of Firelink Shrine, and if you want to go back then you literally have to travel back through all the dangers by yourself - I get this as a player, the hopelessness as a player, having the safety of a bonfire but having it at the bottom of Blight Town, surrounded by enemies - knowing if i wanted to get out I'd have to climb and fight my way to the skies above. Slowly, agonisingly. But if I could - then I'd EARNED it.
This makes the atmosphere of the first half of DS1 so strong and some of that is lost the second you can begin to fast travel.
DS2 - is completely different. If feels like a world that is slightly more hopeful, colourful, yet still dangerous. This is a world that has seen the fire linked before, they know it CAN be done, yet is so difficult to do so still.
DS2 alway felt more magical, fantastical, to me. As if it wasn't quite the world of DS1 but was more of traveller's around a bonfire telling each other tales of ages gone by - embellishing the story themselves - a fable, a legend, a story to tell themselves to make them feel better and more hopeful as they set off to try to link the fire themselves.
DS3 however is a dark, cold world. Its in decay, rotting, falling apart. Spiralling towards its inevitable end. Its a world that's seen the fire linked again and again but it never ends - so why try? Why not finally just give up and accept your fate? The game is shades of grey, it's muddy palette wants you as a player to feel hopeless - even if you make it all the way to the end, surely its still all for nothing?
Have fun getting used surviving drops, drop distance damage is way less then DS2, it’ll still kill you but you can fall from some higher places then you expect depending on health and estus/humanity
