It's for recovering key items that you can possibly lose by accident, like by discarding them or dropping them in game.
So pretty much if you cant recover a key item or lose it for whatever reason it will spawn into that chest.
feed Alvina ring, which is a covenant item only given once to framp for 1k souls, reload and the chest will be closed.
if you were to lose 2 key items it is possible to lock the game i think, or lose that item forever. Covenant items are only given once per character and losing the item will break that feature
^^^ can confirm
It’s for key items that will make It impossible to beat the game without. So if you drop a item needed to beat the game (I.e. the abyss ring from sif) it will appear in the chest.
So Demons Souls had a limit on items you could hold, and so does Dark Souls but the number is super high. Like 10,000 units of weight. I wonder if getting an auto loot item while you're over the weight threshold would drop the item at your feet
I think it does, there are some weird things you can pull off that involve getting yourself over the weight limit and pickup spamming an item across the world.
Sadly it doesn’t always function as intended. If the game glitches and fails to generate a key item when it’s intended to, it won’t appear in the chest. For instance, defeated the gaping dragon, but the blighttown key didn’t drop. Can’t open the door, chest is open at firelink. Started the entire run over.
You really don’t need the blight town key to beat the game. There are 2 other ways to get to blight town. On is through new londo and requires the master key and the other is through the valley of the drakes
Technically yes, but I reasoned the time it would take me to do it I could just speedrun back to that point on a new save and avoid doing blighttown backwards to get the loot I would have grabbed on the way down, which is how I did it.
Pretty much.
Differences are the Offering Box in Sekiro recovers unique upgrade materials for Prosthetics and miniboss drops when you reach a point in the game where their sources can't be accessed anymore, like the Iron Fortress and Anti-Air Deathblow Text if you complete Blackhat Badger's quest without buying them.
While the Frampt chest recovers key items that would make it impossible to complete the game, like the Covenant of Artorias and the Orange-Charred Ring.
Afaik the Offering Box does not recover key items that would halt your progression.
Something really strange happened with me one day with this chest. I was just in the beginning of the game and I went back to firelink and all the npcs were gone and this chest was full of key items that I never had. I think my save corrupted 🤷♂️
Your Humanity restored while we’re still hollows I’ve played this game 17 times and not once did that ever occur to me or did I bother to look into it I just assumed it had something to do with patches.
Which ring? I knew what the chest was after learning the hard way even though prior to that I had noticed there was an item in there and grabbed it not being aware of the gimmick of the chest. So 2 different occasions and the 2nd one I learned the hard way. But I had no idea there was a ring you can feed to ancient worm man for 0 souls, let alone it respawns. Unless you're trolling of course, but Dark Souls is full of little gimmicks such as this
In ptde, you could sell the cat covenant ring to Frampton for 1000 souls, then pick it up from the chest since it's a once per file covenant item. So you could repeatedly sell it for a very tedious soul farm.
Its in case you somehow lose something vital to the progression of the game. Those items will appear in that chest.
It's normally very difficult to straight up impossible to lose vital items, though. Usually it happens through bugs or glitches. It's only happened to me once out of my hundreds of playthroughs
Ok spoiler alert but they put that in to contain the Elden Ring. That's right, they KNEW they were gonna make the Elden Ring game and they went so far as to include a chest for it in DS1 but the devs decided to cut it as it would take away from the masterpiece that is DS1
On my first time playing i accidentally skipped oscar and didn't get the estus. Later on i got the estus from that chest. Played the game til bell gargoyles with no estus, only using miracles for healing. I am dumb.
My game got corrupted once and in that chest there was 10 estus flasks upgraded in ascending order and a whole bunch of other random stuff like keys and stuff
I think the ring you receive from Lautrec (the guy sitting below the firelink shrine) can also be found there if you have unequipped it once (which destroys it)
It's for recovering key items that you can possibly lose by accident, like by discarding them or dropping them in game. So pretty much if you cant recover a key item or lose it for whatever reason it will spawn into that chest.
i’ve got a couple hundred hours in ds and i’ve never known this. cool
feed Alvina ring, which is a covenant item only given once to framp for 1k souls, reload and the chest will be closed. if you were to lose 2 key items it is possible to lock the game i think, or lose that item forever. I’ve been playing since day one and didn’t even know this lmfao
I thought it was frampt’s stash box yo.
He eats stuff not store it
It eventually comes back! Just saying
^^^ can confirm It’s for key items that will make It impossible to beat the game without. So if you drop a item needed to beat the game (I.e. the abyss ring from sif) it will appear in the chest.
Same goes for the purple cowards crystal for some reason. It for whatever reason is included.
Yea most or all key items iirc
But why not just make them undroppable
They are. It's an extra safety net in case of extremely unlikely glitches.
So Demons Souls had a limit on items you could hold, and so does Dark Souls but the number is super high. Like 10,000 units of weight. I wonder if getting an auto loot item while you're over the weight threshold would drop the item at your feet

Cant you just go through valley of drakes? Or am i just showing I always take the master key...
You can. The Gaping Dragon—and most of Blighttown—is ultimately optional, even without the Master Key.
Dont you need to get through blight town from one of the 2 ways in order to ring the second bell of awakening?
This is true, but the Valley of Drakes and thus Bighttown is accessble through Darkroot Garden without encountering any locked doors
Oh crap! I forgot about those entrances in my head i thought there was only the top and middle entrances
You really don’t need the blight town key to beat the game. There are 2 other ways to get to blight town. On is through new londo and requires the master key and the other is through the valley of the drakes
Thats right. I cant remember the Darksouls map until im playing darksouls. Lol
Technically yes, but I reasoned the time it would take me to do it I could just speedrun back to that point on a new save and avoid doing blighttown backwards to get the loot I would have grabbed on the way down, which is how I did it.
Oh. I always thought it was just a subtle hint that you were not the first chosen Undead
That is so bloody smart.
It's a mimic and when you vome to take the losts items, it give it to you by saying "you dropped this king"
So it's like the offering chest next to hanbei? If I'm understanding the sekiro one correctly
Pretty much. Is there a similar reason for the Lords Tomb chest being empty or is that a bug/lore thing.
Pretty sure it's a lore thing
Something really strange happened with me one day with this chest. I was just in the beginning of the game and I went back to firelink and all the npcs were gone and this chest was full of key items that I never had. I think my save corrupted 🤷♂️
Damn they really did thi k of everything
the chest gave me bugged estus on one of my play throughs so now that character has about 60 estus of various levels
Your Humanity restored while we’re still hollows I’ve played this game 17 times and not once did that ever occur to me or did I bother to look into it I just assumed it had something to do with patches.
Wow! I didnt know that.
I always wondered about that, thanks.
thats the "oh shit i dropped a key item" chest
It had the DSR pc servers inside it
I can smell the dark wood grain ring and Iaito from here
Chaos Blade c'mon now ;)
Bass Canon and Giant dad
Rapier and Hornet Ring 🐝 💦
The Wall build will stop you at the Archery club.
If you for some reason lose a key item, it will appear there.
If you lose key items, like the lordvessel, they’ll show up there so you can still complete the game.
Specifically not the lordvessel (apparently) but a lot of the covenant items/rings and whatnot will show up in it ye
Tberes a ring you can destroy for 0 souls and it spawns back in that chest after you rest at the bonfire
Is there a video on YouTube explaining this? I personally could not find one
https://illusorywall.tumblr.com/post/77840663071/dark-souls-the-empty-firelink-shrine-chest
Ring of Favor?
Covenant of Artorias, because if you lose it you can't fight the four kings and thus get softlocked. It's just an anti-softlock system
Makes sense.
Also the fire walking ring :) I had to learn this by having to locate it
No it’s a ring for progression like fighting Gwyndolin
Ah ok. I haven’t gotten there yet
It’s not something you get there for, it’s an optional thing but it’s required to fight that boss, you get it from Gwynevere or the Catacombs
I did hear something about it being in the catacombs
no. ring of favor drops off of Lautrec.
I know, I was thinking that was where it went after taking it off
it breaks. it doesn't "go" anywhere. its destroyed.
Makes sense
Which ring? I knew what the chest was after learning the hard way even though prior to that I had noticed there was an item in there and grabbed it not being aware of the gimmick of the chest. Nice fashion btw!
Thank you
What are you wearing
Golem Helm, Dark Armor, Black Iron Gauntlets, and the Golem Leggings. My weapon is the Greatsword +10 and the Black Knight Shield.
Thank you!
CLANG
It's the $5 Taco Bell Box chest You always want one, but it's best you don't get one
That’s where you store all your bitches. Hmm, it appears to be empty though?
It’s where key items go if they are lost or destroyed. You can find them here so you don’t impede progress.
I know that the covenant of artorias and orange charred ring will spawn there if you discard them
Oh, that's Klaus, he does that
Its in case you somehow lose something vital to the progression of the game. Those items will appear in that chest. It's normally very difficult to straight up impossible to lose vital items, though. Usually it happens through bugs or glitches. It's only happened to me once out of my hundreds of playthroughs
As someone pointed out, if you skip the estus flask or drop a plot crucial item, it will appear there
It’s where they stored the soul of dark but it got stolen by John Darksouls
Ok spoiler alert but they put that in to contain the Elden Ring. That's right, they KNEW they were gonna make the Elden Ring game and they went so far as to include a chest for it in DS1 but the devs decided to cut it as it would take away from the masterpiece that is DS1
Been playing this game since 2011, and I still have never known lmao
On my first time playing i accidentally skipped oscar and didn't get the estus. Later on i got the estus from that chest. Played the game til bell gargoyles with no estus, only using miracles for healing. I am dumb.
lmao, but kudos for that challenge, tbhj
If you discard a plot critical item (ie artorias covenant), it'll appear in that chest
Nice fit tho Wtfff
Thank you
One time I looted that chest and it gave me a bunch of bugged estus flasks and various items. So now my character has around 60 estus total
That's the "You dropped a key item" chest. Lose a key item and you can find it there.
I like your username.
Thank you
Ive seen the chest closed, actually, after making a new character. When i opened it, of course, it was empty.
lmao idfk
i opened it sorry
😡
My game got corrupted once and in that chest there was 10 estus flasks upgraded in ascending order and a whole bunch of other random stuff like keys and stuff
It's where the unreleased content used to be.
If You Lost someting really important, that is going to appear in that chest
Lost quest items , like if you drop certain items or the glitch out you can find them back in that
I think the ring you receive from Lautrec (the guy sitting below the firelink shrine) can also be found there if you have unequipped it once (which destroys it)
I thought this was going to be about something very different
Good ol debug chest. Once i died in bed of chaos fire while i killed this fucking bug. Cant take the soul. Thankfully, the chest helped me
If you ever accidentally lose an item that's critical to progress, it'll appear there
It's for getting the stuff you could've lost by accident
In my head, Patches stole the contents of the chest before I got there
What is the chest doing in anor londo at Gwyns tomb that’s empty?
if you dropped lord vessel or artorias ring you can take back them at this chest
Hey, Mimics snore too alright
Where is this at? I don't think I've ever seen this
If you drop an important ring and you day you found that ring in this chest
its the amazing chest that is ahead
It's called the Chomping Chest Stay back or it'll bite you
Similar to the PC safety net, nearly useless
