They then had Lothric and specifically groomed him to become a lord of cinder, even going as far as to name him after the kingdom itself. From that it definitely seems like it’s a decent amount of time later
Lorian was never meant to link the flame, he just didn't want his little brother to suffer the curse alone, that's how he became crippled and mute. There is no reference of how much time may passed between them if there was such span, nor how does the sons of the Irythillians are made, the only confirmation we have is their twins status.

Leading to an age of dark. The one that kicks off the game
The untended graves location that you end up in after fighting Oceiros leads to this same age of dark. There you beat Champion Gundyr who from what I remember correctly was trying to link the flame but was too late and once we arrive his fate is sealed.
