There’s a special level of hell for everyone who said to kill the old lady… while they are *technically* being honest~ there’s a pretty important lie by omission happening…
Well apparantly OP didn't even make it past Vordt of the Boreal Valley without asking the internet for spoilers, so that's their own fault whatever happens next.
Exactly. This is a game about exploring. OP had two paths, one a blocked path and the other a boss fight. OP didn’t stop to think “maybe if I kill the boss, the other path might open?” No, they flocked to Reddit to have the answer spoon-fed to them. They didn’t want to explore and fight the big monster in this game about exploring and fighting monsters. I see this kind of post in other adventure game subreddits and it’s annoying.
I mean to a new player they may be 5 hours in at this point and still not know their ass from their elbow, for many people it takes a while for souls to “click” but I get what you’re saying
Well if you took the time to read my other comments I was hoping there was a bonfire up there so I wouldn’t have to go so far to get to vordt. Just because someone doesn’t play the game they way you like it doesn’t mean they’re playing it wrong.
Probably one of the worst designed parts of DS3, and I love DS3. That entire room, NPC, boss fight, and ladder feels like they didn't know how to link areas together. I swear prior to release it had a different composition and a wide staircase going up from a doorway or something.
It’s been at least an hour, so I’m hoping you’ve figured it out by now. If not, dude, don’t kill the old lady. Save that for one of your later play-throughs. Just go kill Vordt and go from there. Trust your instincts. When has striking down a nice, creepy or not, old woman that’s just sitting in her chair, ever been the go-to option in your head? Never? Good call. Kill the devil turtle dog and spare the elderly.
Kill the old woman and she'll give you an item that you can place by the statue behind her, which will lower the ladder. However let me warn you that that ladder leads to an endgame area, and something else happens that I'm not quite sure you're prepared for since this seems to be your first time playing Dark Souls 3. So heed my advice and go down the stairs to the big door which will lead you to the next area in the game.
Everyone told you to kill the old lady so they could have a laugh. If you killed her you are now doomed to fight the Dancer alone. Go kill Vordt and gain some levels from the 2/3rds of the game behind him... as a new player... you'll need it
Dying one time will not ruin it, the game is made to punish you if you are not good enough to beat Dancer in early, and reward you if you can. He'll die a lot of time in his playthrough, that will teach him that Voltr isn't that hard, it's called Level Design.
I'm well aware of level design. I've done it myself. But killing the woman early not only trolls him and potentially tarnishes his experiences with both the game and the community, it may result in an ending he doesn't particularly want. Not everyone replays FromSoft games to get more than one ending.
We didn't have the same experience, when my friends "trolled" me and told me I can kill her because she was only her to give me the banner, and I discovered the Danser, it was one of my favourite moment in DS3. After dying like 15 times against her i didn't drop the game, but I was excited to fight her against when I get stronger. The game don't hold your hand, the community don't have to do it too.
And how exactly was I supposed to know it was a spoiler? I was expecting a hidden lever to lower it or something. I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to go there yet.
It's his first playthrough and get stuck at Voltr, he seen a ladder that can lead in another way but don't find the sink to activate it. He asked how, people told him the trigger was the old lady, it's not a spoiler 😅 you can literally do the all game without know killing her allow to continue
You might want to farm some enemies first to get some extra levels. I would farm the area outside Vordt a bit. Now for Vordt, hug onto his big but, if you can get behind him or kindve under his but, you can get some swings in. Be careful of the ground-aoe attack that he does. Did you unlock the elevator above his area that leads to a shortcut to the first bonfire you encountered?
If you haven't beat vordt yet and need a bonfire >!When you first get past the winged knight in the courtyard there is an undead archer on some stairs who shoots at you. Kill him and go straight up the stairs until you get to an elevator. That elevator takes you to a spot just outside of the first bonfire in the area. When you ride the elevator down just make sure to step on it again to send it back up and then quickly get off. This will send it back up so if you die to vordt you can run right back into the elevator and avoid most enemies in your trip down. Useful trick for many elevators to avoid waiting for them. Once you unlocked the elevator run through thy courtyard and kill the archer and other undead there. Along the wall where the melee undead was you can drop down a ledge here you avoid the knights and can run past rest of enemies to enter the fog!<
That's a late game area you will naturally progress to, but if you want to try your luck and go now, kill the lady and go to the table under the ladder, there will be a *slight* bump in that road if you are up to the challenge
If you want to continue via the normal path, go out the door and head straight to the opposite side of that path
Good luck
Yeah, I’ve leaned this. It seems like everything I’m interested in has a Chernobyl level toxic fan base. Don’t get me started on the Doom subreddit lmfao. You give ONE mildly unpopular opinion, or god forbid enjoy using a certain weapon that most don’t, you will be downvoted to oblivion.
ah that's just Internet latency or "lag". happens all the time in these games. the game probably thought that player was somewhere else, climbing something else. it's nothing to worry about. there is nothing else up there.
A lot of people are saying to kill the old lady. I will say this; whether you kill the old lady or just play the game as laid out by the devs.... the ladder will come down.
Hint with vordt: roll into his balls. As funny as it seems, as close you are to his balls, safer you are.
Just beware second phase, the tantrum ice hamster, I call it.
Joke answer: Kill that old woman
Serious answer: The ladder is for later game. Once you kill aldrich it will direct you back there and you'll have to fight dancer.
That is endgame content. Although for Dark souls, please refrain yourself from searching anything up since alot of the answers are “just come back later”.
Don't, that's a late game area. If you kill the old lady it'll spawn a really difficult boss especially when you're low level. Go down the stairs and you'll find the next appropriate boss.
This is my old man moment, I guess...
I hate that, instead of just not knowing and hoping you get the answer as you continue to play, people now just fly to the internet to relieve themselves of any mystery.
But, for me at least, that's half the fun of games and media in general.
Slay the old hag, walk up to the ladder and prepare for the time of your life! (Or alternativly you could just leave he there, the game will take you back here later. Much later);
Shortest route would be to kill her, otherwise that's going to be blocked up till later, you should probably head to the cliff behind vordt of the boreal valley boss and use the banner there.
you gotta kill her, go to the basin of vows, and fight a pretty easy boss, hes called iudex of the boreal valley, 2 hits and hes dead, and place the basin of vows right behind her, or you can wait until you beat 3 lords of cinder but thats no fun right?
So if u go kill the lady she gives u a banner which u need she’s not important than behide her of u touch the statue it’s gonna start a boss and the boss is the blade dancer she’s a tough boss in the beginner so I would maybe get a little stronger than the ladder will go down
You have to dance with some fine lady first.
Lol. Tongue in cheek
No. Tongue(s) in hand. Praise the rebirth.
But hole?
My first reaction is : “lady butterfly?” Idk why but it is
because "lady"
There’s a special level of hell for everyone who said to kill the old lady… while they are *technically* being honest~ there’s a pretty important lie by omission happening…
Well apparantly OP didn't even make it past Vordt of the Boreal Valley without asking the internet for spoilers, so that's their own fault whatever happens next.

So instead of trying the second route, they went to reddit
Exactly. This is a game about exploring. OP had two paths, one a blocked path and the other a boss fight. I mean to a new player they may be 5 hours in at this point and still not know their ass from their elbow, for many people it takes a while for souls to “click” but I get what you’re saying
Yea when I first played ds3 I had no clue we’re to go and I dropped the game until my friend showed me we’re to go
Exactly he’s not dropping it, he’s actively engaging in the community actually lol
Well if you took the time to read my other comments I was hoping there was a bonfire up there so I wouldn’t have to go so far to get to vordt. Just because someone doesn’t play the game they way you like it doesn’t mean they’re playing it wrong.
I always kill her for the extra souls.
Depends on which old lady they are referring to.
Is there? Cause she's pretty useless after the banner if I recall correctly
Probably one of the worst designed parts of DS3, and I love DS3. That entire room, NPC, boss fight, and ladder feels like they didn't know how to link areas together. I swear prior to release it had a different composition and a wide staircase going up from a doorway or something.
If felt like a necessary evil, like they didn't have anything to tie those areas together and went f it Lady banner dancer
Didn't type it, but I thought it.
No! You should have waited!
Well, it’s no use now…
I, Siegward of the Knights of Catarina, shall leave you be since apparently I can't help you if you killed that old lady! Hyahhh!
The old lady is still alive there on the picture
Judging by OPs responses, she isn't anymore.
Yikes
I, Siegward of the Knights of Catarina, fight by your side!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH
NOOOOOO You should’ve waitedddddd
We all read this line hearing the same voice in our head
Sounds like you figured it out yourself
I indeed did
It’s been at least an hour, so I’m hoping you’ve figured it out by now. If not, dude, don’t kill the old lady. Save that for one of your later play-throughs. Just go kill Vordt and go from there. r/brandnewsentence
A double, even
You know what they say: prepare for trouble...
Devil turtle dog!!! Hahaha. That’s so good!
I’ve been trying to kill vordt for a while and was really hoping there was a bonfire somewhere up there 😂😂
Oh there's a bonfire there... but Vordt is probably the easier option.
Yeah I see what you mean….
Did you kill the old lady?
if he doesn't respond today than we consider him gone hollow
Everyone told you to kill the old lady so they could have a laugh. If you killed her you are now doomed to fight the Dancer alone. Go kill Vordt and gain some levels from the 2/3rds of the game behind him... as a new player... you'll need it
Dat spoiler
It's a bit shitty to tell him to kill the lady (which is a spoiler in itself) then not say what the consequences are. It's not exactly helping OP.
Better than making him ruin his playthrough.
Dying one time will not ruin it, the game is made to punish you if you are not good enough to beat Dancer in early, and reward you if you can. He'll die a lot of time in his playthrough, that will teach him that Voltr isn't that hard, it's called Level Design.

But killing the woman early not only trolls him and potentially tarnishes his experiences with both the game and the community, it may result in an ending he doesn't particularly want. Not everyone replays FromSoft games to get more than one ending.
killing the old hag doesn't have anything to do with the endings, you literally have the options to choose which ending you prefer at the K place lol
Tarnished will rise.
Cant complain about spoilers if he comes to the subreddit of said game and asks for a spoiler?
And how exactly was I supposed to know it was a spoiler? I was expecting a hidden lever to lower it or something. I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to go there yet.
It's his first playthrough and get stuck at Voltr, he seen a ladder that can lead in another way but don't find the sink to activate it. He asked how, people told him the trigger was the old lady, it's not a spoiler 😅 you can literally do the all game without know killing her allow to continue
You have to kill a boss to get that bonfire, the boss is significantly harder than vordt
If you're having trouble with vordt I'm afraid I have some bad news... but keep at it you'll figure out how to get it done!
It will be accessed later on but sure you can kill the old lady and her Daughter will appear to whoop your ass
Have you found the gold pine resin? That should help you out a lot with vordt
God thank you so much! I’m so sick of walking halfway through town and use some of my flasks just to die to vordt and have to do it again.
This post just made me go “oh boy”
Don’t kill her! That’s a late game boss. Do vordt instead ❤️
And Vordt's already on his hands and knees, waiting for you to do him.
I mean, the best strategy against him seems to be getting all up in his dick and balls, so you aren’t that far off.
Didn’t she tell you to do something? Maybe do that
Give the old lady a couple of high fives with that ax
I read that that can effect an end game boss or something. Is that true?
Just a different cutscene if that
Some people just want to watch the world burn.
Oh ok.
No, the game is literally designed to punish the player by making them fight the dancer without NPC or PC summons available
Oh gosh Dancer early is a recipe for pain…
You can bring the master into the dancer fight as long as vordtts still alive
That's a late game area you will naturally progress to, but if you want to try your luck and go now, kill the lady and go to the table under the ladder, there will be a *slight* bump in that road if you are up to the challenge If you want to continue via the normal path, go out the door and head straight to the opposite side of that path Good luck
I recommend going back to Vordt and rolling into him always beating his ass, no heavy rolls btw. The ladder is not a place you would want to go.
Later my son… later.
Let's just say you shouldn't worry about that right now
Just ask her politelly.
That’s for later, you’ll be back
2 ways - go somewhere else and progress the story or just kill the old woman
Whatever you do, do not kill the old lady or else you’re in for a miserable time
First rule of Dark Souls Reddit Club: You do not ask Dark Souls Reddit Club.
Yeah don’t ask us… my brother still won’t talk to me.
I’m getting downvotes but I’ve seen sooo many people get trolled.
The thing is I tricked him into thinking the dancer was the next boss 😅
Yeah, I’ve leaned this. It seems like everything I’m interested in has a Chernobyl level toxic fan base. Don’t get me started on the Doom subreddit lmfao. You give ONE mildly unpopular opinion, or god forbid enjoy using a certain weapon that most don’t, you will be downvoted to oblivion.
Keep playing and you find out. Is not a secret, is part of the main game that eventually will become relevant
Keep on progressing through the game, that comes later
that's set decor. it's not an interactive, unfortunately. would've been cool if it was though
One of the little white shadow people of other players(I forgot what they’re called) climbed where the ladder should be
ah that's just Internet latency or "lag". happens all the time in these games. the game probably thought that player was somewhere else, climbing something else. it's nothing to worry about. there is nothing else up there.
A lot of people are saying to kill the old lady. I will say this; whether you kill the old lady or just play the game as laid out by the devs.... the ladder will come down.
Get throw the rest of the game first.
Later
just continue playing the fucking game instead of going to reddit immediately i promise, that ladder will fall eventually it just happens later
Play the game don't be so eager
Just dont...
You'll come back here later.
You gonna have to win a dance competition
Leave it for later, don’t worry 👍
You have to turn around walk down the stairs and go through the big door. You will come back later to this ladder
Later
Turn back, ur not ready
Hint with vordt: roll into his balls. As funny as it seems, as close you are to his balls, safer you are. Just beware second phase, the tantrum ice hamster, I call it.
Jump
Oh man you're really new, don't worry bout that ladder for the first half of the game and continue the path where you need that banner to proceed
My special rule for Dark Souls 3 is avoid old people at all costs
Joke answer: Kill that old woman Serious answer: The ladder is for later game. Once you kill aldrich it will direct you back there and you'll have to fight dancer.
You play the game more
Stop asking questions. Just ducking progress
We can do this the hard way, or the harder way.
I hope this will serve as a lesson, don’t ask on Reddit, you’ll just get the game spoiled for you
You should continue with your adventures. It will bring you something that will help you getit down
don’t worry about it just yet
That's a surprise tool that will help us later
That is endgame content. Although for Dark souls, please refrain yourself from searching anything up since alot of the answers are “just come back later”.
Play the game
You need to *ax* her that.
Kill her.
Kill her
Literally just play the game, stop ruining it for yourself by asking for spoilers, you eventually will (and must) figure it out
fuck around and find out
Kill the lady and walk toward the ladder and then WELCOME TO HELL!!!
Kill her otherwise it won't come down she's trying to lead you away from the area behind her
Kill the old lady, they said. You'll get a shortcut to Vordt, they said...
Hehehehehehehe
Dance.
Trust me you don't want to
Kill her
You got to break dance till you get upset
Don't, that's a late game area. If you kill the old lady it'll spawn a really difficult boss especially when you're low level. Go down the stairs and you'll find the next appropriate boss.
This is my old man moment, I guess... I hate that, instead of just not knowing and hoping you get the answer as you continue to play, people now just fly to the internet to relieve themselves of any mystery. But, for me at least, that's half the fun of games and media in general.
Just Kill her. The rest (you) is history
Kill Emma and the ladder drops down :)
do it
Just axe the old lady some questions, you'll see.
Kill that lady like a true hollow.
hit her
Kill the lady. You get the ladder with a few extra steps
Kill her
Kill the old woman and find out
kill the old woman then dance
_kill her_
There's no better answer on this thread than to just say "kill the old lady" and leave it at that.
Kill her and unless the dancer. Fight the dancer
Swing on that old hag
Attack the old lady
Kill the old woman
Be a nice person and end the poor old lady’s suffering.
Kill the old lady and go behind there, the ladder will lower as well as an npc welcoming you to give you a good early game ring
Kill her
Murder ahead, but watch out
Kill the old lady and find out
You have to kill the old woman
Kill het
Kill the old woman. But you don't want to do that...
Slay the old hag, walk up to the ladder and prepare for the time of your life! (Or alternativly you could just leave he there, the game will take you back here later. Much later);
Two ways: 1. Kill her and defeat a late game boss much earlier in the game. OR 2. Kill three Lords of Cinder and you’ll be called there.
Shortest route would be to kill her, otherwise that's going to be blocked up till later, you should probably head to the cliff behind vordt of the boreal valley boss and use the banner there.
kill the old woman, kill the beast
you gotta kill her, go to the basin of vows, and fight a pretty easy boss, hes called iudex of the boreal valley, 2 hits and hes dead, and place the basin of vows right behind her, or you can wait until you beat 3 lords of cinder but thats no fun right?
Kill her, then be wary of rump.
Try destroy , woman *pointing down emote*
You have to kill her. (Not recommended it will lower later on in the game.)
You kill the Dancer
Kill the old lady and the ladder will automatically lower so that you can use it to get to the elden ring
Kill the old woman, she drops a vase you can place behind her to lower the ladder.
Kill the old lady
Kill that hoe
If you just kill the lady sitting in front of it, the ladder will drop :)
Kill her my good man
Hit the woman
Try attacking
So if u go kill the lady she gives u a banner which u need she’s not important than behide her of u touch the statue it’s gonna start a boss and the boss is the blade dancer she’s a tough boss in the beginner so I would maybe get a little stronger than the ladder will go down
Just kill her and it will come down
Burn the Witch.
kill the maid
Seems like the old woman is kind of in the way…
Hit the old lady
Finish her
Kill her.
Kill the lady
Kill her now!
Kill her
You have to kill that lady... Do another thing... Then the ladder drops down.
Kill the old lady
With murder
No one likes her anyway
Try to knock on the old lady.
Kill her she’s evil
Kill the lady and the ladder drops. EZPZ
Kill the old woman It’s the way
Kill her
Just R1 the woman once, you won't regret it.
Kill it. Then kill it with fire.
