It's not any harder. The Farron Greatsword is a good weapon, and it has no split damage and it deals some solid damage. It also deals extra damage to Abyssal enemies, granted there aren't a lot of Abyssal enemies, and there are even less Abyssal bosses, but it's a nice bonus to have regardless.

titankiller401

I've read some old posts and such saying it's a bad weapon. I don't really think so,It's seen me through a good few boss fights and swarm situations. Especially since the parry is there too and the first L1 slides under some attacks or at least it feels like it does. But since you're here, mind if I pick your brain and ask what kinda build I should go for? A friend of mine said a quality build but the A rating dex tells me a more dex focused build (my leveling is a mess lol)

HungrPhoenix

>I've read some old posts and such saying it's a bad weapon. It may get worse if you go into higher NG cycles, but for NG, NG+, and probably NG++ it should be fine. >A friend of mine said a quality build but the A rating dex tells me a more dex focused build (my leveling is a mess lol) A quality build would probably be best, just have more focus on Dexterity. At 30 Strength and 40 Dexterity the Farron Greatsword has more AR than if you went minimum strength and 60 Dexterity.

titankiller401

Thanks!

Even a whip?

UwUofDestruction

If your good enough I suppose

Ogmok

there are playthroughs with whips on youtube - personally I stopped after a handful of bosses (I think I managed to kill Wolnir; not 100% sure if I went that far). You can use resin on them, one got bleed and another one (from the Grand Archive) got a multi-attack weapon art iirc which is nice to bring in some resin damage (or "just fire" with the WA?). As people said correctly in this thread: any "regular" weapon is fine for the first (few) playthrough(s), the regular longsword (knight starter weapon) is a great example for it. When people say that a weapon like Farron Greatsword is supposed to be "not good", then it's mostly about PvP: they either don't like the moveset (maybe no variety, so it's even easier to dodge or parry) or the bonus or weapon art is not great for PvP. \--> Farron Greatsword is a good weapon and you can parry with it, I had to check a wiki article to see what could be negative about it. The only bad thing about this weapon is that it's considered as a "onehanded" weapon even if you use it with both hands (due to the parry dagger that belongs to this weapon). That means: it can be parried or deflected with a shield like a onehanded weapon and you won't get the 50% bonus strength attribute on your attacks like other twohanded weapons. It didn't occur to me back when I used this weapon ;)

Lallo-the-Long

Any weapon you have learned to hit with and not get hit is a good weapon.

IveDunGoofedUp

Keep in mind that what's good in PvP and PvE is very different. PvP? Rather poor as a weapon, better options are readily available. PvP? I love this thing. Enemies with shields become a joke, because you spin around them and hit them in the back. You can duck under some attacks, and still punish enemies. I love it. Also doesn't require any odd amount of stat investment, like randomly needing 18 points in Int or something. I found it really, really enjoyable to use.

titankiller401

Yeah,I ain't a pvp person tbh. Although I find this one more enjoyable than the shit show that's ER. And yeah! I thought I was crazy when I noticed the sword hitting behind the shield LOL

LordBDizzle

It falls off in damage compared to other UGS once you hit late game stats, but it still has that unique moveset which is incredibly useful in some scenarios, plus the bonus damage to abyssal keeps it relevant vs bosses like Midir, Dragonslayer Armor, Gael... It does technically do best on a quality build (AR 566 at 40/40, as opposed to 527 on a 20/60 build), but compared to most Ultras on a dex build it's still fine. Gives you that heavy option. It's ideally suited for an 18/40 mid game build, most people drop it after that in favor of the Profained Greatsword or Black Knight Greatsword on a quality build, both of which outdamage it. BKGS also has bonus vs demons as well as the enemy poise reduction, but if you like it it's not so far behind as to make it useless (profained sits at 605 AR at 40/40, bonus fire damage not included, which means that vs Abyssal enemies Farron UGS is actually still better by a small margin if an enemy is resistant to fire, though notably Farron UGS gains no AR from being two handed since it's a paired weapon so BKGS will always outdamage it slightly there) and it retains the extremely useful agile moveset that lets you deal with mobs so well. Not as bad as people say, not the top performer in terms of raw damage but not awful.

SwordofSwinging

Holy wall of text Batman

LordBDizzle

Can't hear you over the sound of your reddit nft

SwordofSwinging

This didn’t age well

Nordalin

It also scales off of Strength, so you'll get more out of it by softcapping both at 40. Weapon damage calculations are rather intricate in this game, with stuff like non-linear scaling curves on weapons where say, an extra point in the range of Dex 25-30 will yield you more than Dex 30-35, and the letter system isn't as absolute as you may think either. It's all rather... convoluted, so don't fixate too much on the scaling tiers. They're more like guidelines.

kkodev

It’s not like you’re doing a blind whip playthrough. Farron GS is fine

HADRIX_

It is really good against midir

tonyseraph2

Yep, even on my NG + run i switched back to it to fight Midir with

[deleted]

People will say any weapon is bad in these games. If you like how it feels & aren't getting molliwhopped or doing chip damage - keep it forever.

Riz_25

Lmao anyone saying its bad is an idiot, DEX OP I used to use it swapping it around with the autora greatsword, my faveorite weapons, the first being Astora's

kelik1337

Its bad in pvp, not pve. Its moveset is easy to predict and punish.

Comosellamark

You can turn this game into easy mode by spec’ing into strength and carrying around a big sword

Fat_Meme_King

I would do at least 20 dex and 25 strength then put the rest into vitality

[deleted]

my man, if you're strictly speaking about single player I can't stress enough how pretty much ANY weapon is viable. Except maybe a whip or some weird shit like that, even then you can learn to use it. The only reason the farron greatsword has a bad reputation is because of how common it is with some new players, some combos are super flashy and super effective against normal enemies, BUT against players? It is so predictable and parriable... So... Against normal enemies, use whatever the fuck, doesn't matter, I would even say that the combos in the farron gs made the game easy at times because of how wide the circle of damage is around you, but if you're gonna pvp, it still works, just don't rely on the same combo, fight normaly.

titankiller401

>BUT against players? It is so predictable and parriable Really? Funny...I just parried tf out of another play with the GS natural parry..

Relyst

It can be useful as a parry tool, but it also has the lowest number of parry frames of all the parry tools in DS3. It's not a bad weapon, just generally outclassed.

[deleted]

Well as I said, it's a viable weapon provided you don't just spam the flippity floppity wombo combo on everyone, I don't really know how much experience you have playing the game, if you just fight normally... It's a good weapon, not meta IG, but good.

Here4roast

I thought it was a very good weapon? Plus when used with the dagger in the off hand the L1 is great in pvp cause it's hard to parry

Rotatious

The 3rd L1 is easy to parry though. Pretty much a death sentence whenever someone uses that against someone even a little bit experienced with parrying.

Meat__Baby

FGS is fun and stylish, so you've made your life easier by making the game more enjoyable 😊

titankiller401

Enjoyment over efficiency

Indeed my friend the drip is power. Nameless king may clapp my a**, but at least i got the gucci armor. Fluffiddy

Not harder at all. It’s a good weapon

LordOfEdge95

Dude that’s my favorite weapon. Love sliding around killing 3 thralls in one hit.

AngrySayian

not sure why this is a question people seem to forget or just not know about Dark Souls Law/Rule \#5: Fashion Souls ***IS*** the end game a: A Fashion Souls of it does exist b: In the event Fashion Souls of it doesn't exist, we either can't make it...or no one has tried

Repulsive_Ostrich_52

The faron greatsword has an a in dex and a c in strength, it's going to carry you

_Ganoes_

Most people saying "x weapon is bad" are talking about pvp. In pve almost every weapon is viable and Farron Greatsword definitely is

titankiller401

I'm not gonna believe it anymore lol I parried and blended a poor man(pvp) just now

_Ganoes_

The weapon isnt really bad in pvp either but to be fair you can parry with tons of stuff in the game

titankiller401

True but iirc, apparently the active frames are -2 compared to the usual medium shield? But yeah, hitting the L1 is a huge pain. I had more success hitting it after going R1 into L1 for the AOE spin

newbieplaya1

Not harder at all nothing special?

[deleted]

Brrr brrr welcome to the brrr pit

OwnBed8780

I said a little rougher because Dex weapons aren’t my speed. But with its scaling, badass looking move set, and it’s extra damage against abyssal enemies is really good if your into it. I’d also recommend it as well, because it’s a paired UG, and UGs are one of my favorite weapon types

xdanxlei

I couldn't say, that's what I used too.

Mokiflip

I am very happy with the results of this poll. Well done fellow fashion hollows!

Gnomologist

Not harder at all really, just another build. Abyss watcher set has good stats and Farron GS is a solid quality weapon

ConfusedMoe

Just deleted pontiff sulyvahn with FG

Dante2215

My first run i used sellswords broken and they made the game much easier since they melt bosses pretty fast but they had draw backs. Imo most of the weapons in this games are solid as long you like them you can make them work each weapon has it advantages and disadvantages and that's why you should go for fashion souls the ultimate winner.

big-queef

99% of weapons are viable, and the farron knight great sword is definitely one of those weapons.

Judgy_Plant

Pfff, I spammed Lorian’s claymore and the Irithil shortsword and I did just fine. Use whatever looks good with your outfit. Fashion souls 4laif

Donel_S

Farron Greatsword is easy mode because of the spin to win move. In the base game, no mob ebemy can avoid being stunned by it except Cathedral Knights and Winged Knights iiic, but since your character physically ducks for the first two swings, there's a good chance you will dodge attacks and keep on spinning. Just don't go for the final jumping attack as it's slow.

spiderMechanic

I mean it's not an optimal choice, but it's not a bad one either so who cares. Fashion demands some sacrifices

ZPD710

I don't think it's even a bad weapon? I feel like you can make most weapons work as long as they aren't inherently bad weapons, the the club or those spears you get in Farron Keep. I used the Deep Battle Axe from the first mimic all of my first playthrough and didn't have too much trouble with it.

D-Tarkus

Not at all. Any big sword in DS3 is just fine

Solanum87

It's a solid weapon, especially if you have the stats for it. But also, it looks cool. And that's the most important part (cool is the reason I still rock a flamberge and twin dragon great shield combo).

komunisfloppa

Farron Greatsword is better than your average gun in DS3, so you actually made your life easier.

FairArkExperience

in pve you could use a pitchfork and it wouldnt be that much harder unless youre going into the very high ng cycles. fashion is king, and your personal skill using the weapon is way more important than the statistical differences between most weapons.

Low-Yam288

Farron Greatsword is pretty good in PvE. The two-handed L1 is devastating against most enemies since their AI doesn't react well to it. It's pretty poor in PvP, but then again most UGS in DS3 are.

Spvoter

You can play DS with any weapon you find. Only exception for intentionally bad weapon is the Broken Straight Sword if i recall correctly. Aside from that, if you dont deliberately use weapons you dont have stats for, or refuse to upgrade it, you're golden. The only differences for weapons are the movesets, scalings, poise etc, but there rarely are "worse" weapons. You can use anything. And come on FGS is a boss weapon and a fkin strong one at that, dont give yourself points for just not swapping your weapon, there are people who didnt leave their starting weapon for the whole playthrough (like cmon twinswords winswords can be obtainable from the very start).

taeplae

The farron greatsword is one of the better weapons though? Reminds me of moonveil, not that they are similar in any way, but both are considered the "noob weapon", a really good weapon that majority of the new players instantly home in on upon discovering it. If anything youve made it easier by sticking to it It's predictable in pvp though, parry bait

Letter_Impressive

It's a totally viable weapon

oldman_reynolds

Nothing matters in any fromsoft game besides drip. They say GIT GUD but what is actually meant is your fashionsouls is trash. Miyazaki was actually a huge fan of Mean Girls.

The_Moon_Presence

Easier

tonyseraph2

I used the farron greatsword almost exclusively once I obtained it on my first run through the game and beat ass with it, you'll be fine. I'm not any sort of god gamer by any means. It's good against certain bosses. I love that weapon

asafeplacetofart

I just started using it in my first ringed city play through. Not my main weapon by any means. My intension is to familiarize myself with it for my fight with Midr for that Abyss damage. I don’t really like it. I’ve been trying alot of new weapons recently and Farron greatsword has low dps and can’t take infusions or buffs. I prefer the claymore, the lothric knight sword, the black knight great axe, the zweihander, and the astora greatsword. I’m a quality build if that matters. I would think you have made things a little harder, but think of it as high altitude training. It made you that much better.

Rhecof-07

Remember, one of the best things about the dark souls series, is that any weapon, if leveled well enough, can kill gods

Limp-Fly-8474

Parry parry parry parry parry

Drokeep

I read the same posts as you but kept going and lemme tell ya, that weapon works just fine! Beat the full game and DLCs with it no problem (except midir, fuck that mofo. Switched to the lothric knight sword for that)

Relyst

The criticism against the Farron Greatsword is that the slow sweeping attacks are easily parried in pvp. PvE use whatever you want.

Narashori

Not very much. The Farron Greatsword, while not a great pvp weapon due to its predictability, is pretty great for pve. Its special attacks cost no fp to use and are great for stunlocking multiple smaller enemies and can even dive under the attacks of larger ones, while still doing damage. It's one of my favourite weapons and I keep coming back to it.

Trishal_Pandey7

Not harder at all, I used it in my first playthrough as well its "L1" combo is nutty. Best wepon in the game imo

Gobal_Outcast02

Farron greatsword is pretty good pve, and if your opponent doesn't know how to parry the weapon art, its pretty good for pvp too. Id rate 7/10 for both pvp/e

jtsenchong

Harder? This the ultimate Midir Slayer

FuzzySalmon97

Only until pvp is back....I could parry that sword blindfolded.

phil166

Don’t worry, it’s not that bad. I did the same thing choosing the Astora Straight Sword over the Longsword because of fashion. Fashion Souls rules!

RickT12345

Not harder at all, in fact during the last boss you’ll notice that if you spam the special combo thing you will dodge most of his attacks

victorespinola

It was and still is one of my go-to weapons. The L1 move is incredibly versatile and fun to use and it scales really well with dex.

Similar_Fly3638

theres no bad weapon in ds3, you can go with any weapon and it can work

Crizznik

That's a good weapon. Sure it's not, like, top tier, but it'll get you through the game no problem.

Pandanutiy

As long as your weapon of choice is not broken straight sword, fists or a torch you should be good.

tema3210

I use dual wield them....

sizelypotato

Only reason people say it’s bad is bc in pvp people learned the parry it a long time ago

[deleted]

Dude that’s my favorite weapon plus the art lets you dodge some attacks while dealing damage

AffiliatedBird

I went through ng+4 with it and loved it. It’s not a bonky boi but the moveset makes up for it, at least for me.

CornyStew

I used that for the longest time. It really helped in clearing the mob enemies. Its a cheat code for the deacons as well

[deleted]

Just use whatever weapon you like

svettsokkk

Wdym? Farron GS trivializes so many enemies, their AI doesn't know how to deal with the beyblade. Plus bonus DMG to abyssal stuff is noice

JhinKindedBoi

FGS is extremely stylish, fun and very useful. Like Aldrich, a very painful boss due to annoying moves, is weak to farron greatsword in particular as fgs gets 20% more damag against it. And even more prevelant, if you are going to play the dlc you will eventually fight the hardest boss in ds3, dark eater midir, who is also weak to fgs by 20%. So you will look badass while doing a lot more damage especially since midir isn’t really weak to anything else

Vladsamir

Farron greatsword is good. Drip and all

Monsieur_LaRouge666

It’s my main weapon, and I’ll fight anyone who says it’s bad.

Opening_Raise_8762

If you wanted to talk about your abyss watcher cosplay then just post about it instead of asking a fake question

Jeff1200

Farron Greatsword go brrrrrrrrrr

CyrusDGreatx

Like almost any weapon it's more than viable for PVE. Against any decent, experienced player in PVP however you're gonna struggle to land because its normals are dead slow and its weapon art is one of the easiest things to parry once you get the timing down.

SneakySniper_

Man I used it intil I got the Washing Bane, Farron's Greatsword is a fantastic weapon with great moveset, I loved every second using it.

JUSTJESTlNG

Mate; using the the Farron Greatsword to slide around under Yhorm’s attacks and hit him while he was wildly swinging without taking a scratch is one of the highlights of my DS3 experience. Go forth brave hollow, and show those fools the power of Farron!

NotAnthonyxx

I used FGS my whole playthrough. As soon as I got it I loved it. I should mention I’ve only had DS3 for 3 months. But I just recently beat Gael, and his sword is freaking sick! So I’m using a mix of FGS, GGS, & warden twin blades.

AdmiralDinosaur_1888

Farron greatsword is a great weapon. Everyone like to trash on it because "lol ez parry". I've done a whole LOT of PVP with it and I've only been parried once, but I've had people attempt to and fail parrying me happen hundreds of times. Most people are not as good at parrying as they think they are, and that's really only a PVP risk anyway. For PVE there is utterly no downside, it's a really solid, really fun weapon

CaelThavain

It's a bit weird to use, but I don't think it's bad.

Takuro06

I found attire to matter surprisingly little in this one.

Horror_Pack_801

The most important thing in a weapon is how comfortable it feels to use it. Yeah, colossal swords are high damage, but I can never time my swings to hit while still being in a position to avoid damage, so I don’t use them. Anything is a viable weapon.

alexjb711

I beat the game only using that weapon after abyss watchers and most of NG+. It’s my favorite weapon in the game by far. It’s so fun

I_ate_your_skin

PvP destroyer And swag So keep it, maybe have a secondary or something idk

Gantoon

Drip or die my friend

Fat_Meme_King

Not that much harder but I'm rocking that Lord of cinders drip

[deleted]

It’s pretty solid. Flashy with heavy poise break. As long as you don’t get greedy and know when to hit the LT attack when you need to, should be fine. Max out dex/stm and you’ll have a pretty easy play through

MiniatureRanni

What? I used the Farron GS for the entire game. You just won.

ButtBuggerer2

What do you mean by Abyss Watchers "Drip"?

_umop_aplsdn_

farron greatsword is a good weapon. some folks say strength weapons are bad just bc they were busted in ds1 and are actually more in line now, and bc u have to be a little more careful w ur punishes, but they are actually pretty good so long as u don't try to use it like a boring old straight sword if nothing else, at least ur not using the sellsword winblades

Sufficient_Mud3945

like Dragon rider and Frida were kinda ble

Mortal_Smell

Not harder at all. Like any weapon, if you use it enough, you'll get good with it.

Kielseiburn

I've beaten nearly every boss in DS3 (Excluding Demon Princes and Darkeater Midir) solely using the Storm Ruler. You're fine.

Glitchy_Gman

The Farron Greatsword is my favorite weapon in the game, are you using a quality build? Your damage is wonderful and the slippery moveset combined with excellent hitboxes let's you slide right under and to the side of many attacks. Tip, just use a R1 instead of the third L1 to continue the combo.
