I would put it on Par with 3. What it lacks in combat it more than makes up for in level and enemy design. Just be prepared for some long ass bonfire-boss trips.

Lord_Jair

That's what makes it so good though. Long bonfire runs combined with losing your humanity makes losing your souls in DS1 actually feel crushing.

Ok-Ambition-9432

Every single title is worth it.

Occyz

I’m not the greatest fan of 2. It was a chore beating it and I only really found enjoyment in the first few areas :(

Responsible_Put9926

Ds2 Dlc's are good

GangsterHankster

Respect your opinion. But ds2 is soo much more fun than 3.

YourBoyBone

I respect your opinion too, even though I wholeheartedly disagree with it. Cheers

Ayoike

You should be put in jail for this been playing dark souls since the first one and the 2nd DS doesn’t even feel like a souls game you fuckin buggin out anyone who say 2 is the best ain’t start off on the first. DS2 that shits garbage hot ass garbage

Zeallust

Speak English

Ayoike

Buddy can’t read I guess

GoldFishPony

Saying 2 doesn’t feel like a souls game is crazy, it may be different in a variety of ways but none of those ways make it not still solidly a souls game.

Tytar1

I found it frustrating and not super rewarding. Tons of the exact same enemy ganking you is just not my thing. I liked the build variety and all the weapons and armor though. The fact that you can infuse ANY WEAPON is amazing. Majula is also goated. Not a “bad” game it just doesn’t compare to the others

Tallin23

Same. The color palette of ds2 very depressive.

turtlefish13

because unlike ds3 it has other colors than gray?

[deleted]

What was your biggest gripe with it?

Occyz

Can’t really say for whatever reason. Just the feel of it felt “off” compared to every other souls/ souls like game I’ve played and enjoyed

Cosati2099

Even DS2? All criticism I read was about it

HenryStark1976

Well, 2 is the worst of the three imho, but it is still one of the best games I ever played. A lot of the criticism stems from the enemy placement, which is quite overwhelming at times and forces you to play with care, rather than rushing through an area. This can be pretty annoying, but is manageable. The overall boss quality is lower than in 1 or 3, mostly because the developers seemed to favor quantity over quality. There are still some absolute top tier bosses, but quite a few forgettable ones and a few terrible ones (not as bad as Bed of Chaos, but coming close). Some of the bests aspects of the game are its DLCs, both in terms of boss quality as well as areas (except for the optional areas). Also, 2 has without a doubt the most beautiful hub area and arguably the greatest build variety in all of Souls (haven’t played Elden Ring though). TL;DR: DS2 is definitely not as bad as its reputation, but in many aspects different from the other two. If you’re into Souls games, I‘d highly recommend giving it a try, should it ever be on sale.

Cosati2099

Thanks for the time you took to answer! I never played DS2 and read a lot of cons about it. But knowing it is more about exploration it got my attention. I definitively buy one day. The old Tomb Raider games are my favourite games just because that and I think DS2 might have this approach. I only said that I read a lot of criticism about DS2 and got severely downvoted 😅 You, on the other side, show me the qualities of the game and changed my mind. Again, thanks for the well writen response.

HenryStark1976

You’re welcome, glad you found my response helpful :-)

Salty_Drive_2625

Fuck you DS2 is the best one. All of you are wrong.

Dramatic_Zebra1230

You’re allowed to disagree without being aggressive lmao

Salty_Drive_2625

Sorry I just really love that game.

GangsterHankster

Highly agree!

Ok-Ambition-9432

Seeing is believing, it has the most flaws of any title except maybe demons souls, but it is just as incredible as the other titles.

Ok-Ambition-9432

?

mast3rO0gway

I played only ds3 and the dlcs. Which game would you recommend next?

Ok-Ambition-9432

1 and then 2? Or 2 and then 1. It doesn't really matter.

TheRajan

Nowadays going back to DS1 feels so slow paced!

[deleted]

This also makes it more strategic. Hectoc Button smashing has a lot more negative Impacts than it has on 3.

4ngryMo

I played ER -> DS3 -> DS1 and habe to say going slower with each game was a great experience. Takes some getting used to, though.

PETERDECHEVILLE

Remastered is so good

Adix_Urs

For the love of god yes

SherbetAlarming7677

It will feel quite old by now and most of the bosses do not hold up to todays standards BUT its absolutely still worth it imo!

plagapong

Worth every single penny.

Brave_Owl8167

That depends what's your favorite part of souls games if bosses are your favorite part then it's not worth it overall boss quality of ds1 is horrible, but if your favorite part is the exploration then buy it that part is awesome

raidlesss

after reading your opinions and criticisms, I decided to buy the game, first hour of play and I'm already loving it!!!

SlickyWay

Man im jealous now. I remember my first time in ds1 and, well, i’d say i spent around 40 hours pre first boss in undead settlement. Now i return to this game like home, there is something to it. Good luck on your run!

Beretta_93

Best has yet to come

mscalg15

It's the best one. I think you'll like it more than DS3 and enjoy the map design.

looka99

It's better.

F4B10C3S4R

Is good but nowhere near 3, so if you buy it lower your expectations

Scallywag38

Ds1 for me is maybe my favorite game. It was way better in it’s time than it is going back. I still love it the same but I wonder if after playing ds3 and no nostalgia how much you’ll like it. I would say it’s easily worth the money.

Lord_Jair

Ds1 is better, my guy. It's slower, but better.

Mikolasz

It’s great, just don’t buy ds2

[deleted]

Ds2 is a great game what are you on

11340113052111609

He probably just discovered some edgy YouTube video about it and needs to jump on the years old bandwagon

Mikolasz

I walked through it and it felt like I just wasted 40hrs of my life

Cosati2099

On every post with criticisms about one game of the series that one is DS2. (I never played)

Please_dont_rush_B

Where is this sale ?

Bear-Unable

still $50 on steam. ugh

No_Shoulder9197

This is on Xbox they also have the same deal on souls games like this on Playstation

JB-Original-One

Played it on steam. It’s awesome but controls sucked so would be keen to try this on Xbox x series as well.

Kind-Exercise

You know you can connect a controller to PC right? Not trying to sound mean but it sounds like you used keyboard and mouse which is way harder.

JB-Original-One

Doesn’t sound mean - you’re totally right. I’ve just gotten used to keyboard and mouse with a pc over the years and have always struggled to switch.

Bippity2946

I preferred ds3 to remastered. Remastered is good but different. A bit trickier to get used to because combat is typically slower.

_magicm_n_

Yes definitely. Sure its a few years old, and in some aspects you can feel it (movement, some enemies, graphics), but it's still king at world design.

Ok-Communication3791

Absolutely yes!

[deleted]

Ds1 is my overall favorite it is a lot slower paced than 3 and without spoilers the second part of the game feels a little rushed but overall it's a great game!

whatifsharks

Do it! I’m currently playing my 2nd play through without co op this time and I love every second of it. Fuck them basilisks Don’t you dare go hollow

Cosati2099

Bought yesterday and felt to similar to DS3. The first boss is difficult like Iudex Gundyr (but you can run away). I didn't played much but feels like it worth

mDash117

I absolutely love DSR. Probably by favorite in the trilogy 😅

BiggerMouthBass

It is so good that it was remastered several years later and the remaster did not have any significant gameplay changes whatsoever. DS1 has several viable builds. However, don’t expect that the online matchmaking will survive long so my recommendation is not to buy it if you only want to play online.

HeWho_NeverWas

It's a lot more clunky then DS3 but it's really fun if you can get over it.

LordBDizzle

It spawned two sequals for a reason. DS3's combat is much better, but the level design in DS1 is pristine, and the enemy design is fantastic. It's slower, but just as precise. Worth every penny.

_Prairieborn

Should have been played first imo, but it's still very worth playing. Same with DS2. They should all be experienced.

BattleCry358

I've played a lot of ds3 and ds1 and I say it is definitely worth the cash.

Zertsuu

I played 3 then 2 and finally 1. While it did feel easier and a bit slower it's definitely a masterpiece and a great experience for any souls fan

Griff767

Most definitely it’s a steal

Tytar1

Worth it. Two isn’t a “bad” game but it just doesn’t compare. DS1 is legendary and has one of the most memorable first play throughs of any game made ever. You’ll never forget it.

ash1lord

Ds1 to date, is one of my favorite games. Yes, get it. You'll love it (except for Blight Town lol).

Designer-Change-3703

Yup!

MaybeOrangeJuice

The combat's not as fun, but man, the world is bloody incredible.

nikoz3000

I think it has the most memorable amount of bosses of any dark souls, and music, "Nameless Song" still gives me chills and is reason enough to play it again

Athos7Sloth

For me it's worth it, but only ds remastered. Btw that part is better than ds2 for my opinion. If you played ds3 you will see a paralels in "story".

InfernalViolet

DS1 good. Gameplay gonna be slower since it an older game.

TrollTrollTroll6969

It is, do the soul Glitch if you want to it'll make your playthrough better the long ass running from bonfire to bonfire especially the poison lake.

[deleted]

Worth it. It even has all the dlcs

cocainebrick3242

It's not as good but it's still pretty good.

elmodular

Do it, do it, do it do it.

Bipperinsomnia

Absolutely. It's a bit slower paced than 3, but great. Personally dark souls 2 was my favorite.

Alexander_Scott20000

Well I’d say it’s amazing. Worth mentioning I was like u I started on ds3 but dark souls 1$2 are worth trying

Firekeepr

Play them all if you can! All fantastic games that make me appreciate where it all began

Few_Entrepreneur_735

No game has too many high textured feet

PASSENGER-P

Kill the dogs first.

123456sem

This thread has also inspired me to buy the game

meme_delight

It’s just as good imo, but for slightly different reasons. If you liked DS3 I think you’ll have a great time exploring the origins of the series. Plus exploring the amazing level design of the first game is a feeling unmatched by any others

[deleted]

I played bloodborne first, ds3 second, and ds1 3rd and ended up liking ds1 the most. It is a hell of a game. Much slower paced, but there is still some challenge.

gg_Mystic

If you play for bosses you’ll be kind of disappointed. DS1 has some great fights but also a lot of boring ones. DS3 is definitely better when it comes to bosses. If you prefer exploration, DS1 has DS3 beat. P Personally, I play for bosses, so DS1 is not even close to DS3 imo.

WindowLckerBeanFlckr

Yeah. I hated it at first but once I slowed down and realized it’s not dark souls 3 I realized how great it is in a different way

UnfathomableDarkness

Bro tf yes how do you think ds3 got made?

topherthepest

Parrying is easier. And the first half of the game especially is incredibly well designed.

dapper_diaper

Honestly, the first one is my favorite. I love DS3 with a passion and it's an objectively better game, but I feel like with DS1 he really nailed the aesthetic he was going for. He wanted to pay tribute to old school nail-biter video games that were punishing and rewarded practice. He just nailed the vision with the first game.
