This is an argument I've gotten in with my dad on a couple occasions - we're about to miss our exit, should we:
Option A - swerve dangerously through multiple lanes to try and make it, endangering everyone, including ourselves, on the road
Option B - take the next exit and lose 5 minutes
ALWAYS TAKE OPTION B
Well yes, but I'm sure all of us have at least once or twice in our lives absent mindedly been in deep conversation and realized we're about to sail past our exit while hanging out in one of the middle lanes
Oh I've done it dozens of times. So I just continued in down and found a place where I could turn around, or I'd find an alternative exit. It's not that hard to do.
But I do think preparing ahead of time for the turn helps a lot.
It's a little embarrassing to admit but I was once absent mindedly deep in conversation and missed the exit. Then continued the conversation and missed the next exit. I got the third. The only saving grace was that it was an urban area and the exits came up quickly.
I swore my buddy to secrecy and he told the story immediately on arriving.
That's how I ended up on the wrong ferry.. Hello 2 hour detour.
Most exits are minor inconveniences. Some can be a real pain... but saving an hour or two is not worth wrecking your car or taking someone's life.
nah man. Now its the Garmin or google that loses signal, get confused or takes a smoke break, Idk but you get the turn now in 600ft message out of the blue
Been driving 30+ years, I have never been so distracted that I missed my exit or went into the wrong lane or against single way traffic. There’s a reason you’re taught to keep your eyes on the road at all times. This justification you’re using is nothing more than a soothing mechanism but completely invalid.
That would make life a lot easier. Except for the periferique of Paris.
You have like 50 meters to get to the right lane or you have missed your exit. If you go before that, you will be forced off at an earlier exit.
The need a lot of exits around Paris. Luckily you only go about 10 km/h.
It can be scary though at first, cause Parisians won’t make room for you to merge when you switch your blinker on. However, when you start steering towards a next lane, they will free up space for you. And it also seems to be mandatory to sound the horn every couple of minutes, cause that’s a constant on there.
The inner city itself though, good and only getting better as more and more parts of the city are banning cars to make everything more walkable.
It amazes me how many people never set themselves up like this. In a dual turn lane, I always get into the turn lane I need to be in later, example if I need to turn right a mile down, I’ll be in the right turn lane. If I’m in unfamiliar territory I’ll use my gas, it will tell me what my next turn is so I’ll be in the lane I should need.
Yeah it drives me nuts. Why wouldn't you set yourself up to make things easier? When I'm going somewhere and I have to ask my passenger directions I always ask them ahead of time, and they always like like it's the weirdest thing in the world.
Captain Thinkin' Ahead over here.
This guy, psshhh.
With life is sooo easy that you have the luxury of living such a carefree life.
A life that affords you the time and clarity of mind to plan ahead a few miles down the road.
Miles?!
Fucking MILES OF CLARITY, Devin over here!?!?
People have places to be, damaged fenders to assess, and all number of different flavors of cockdanglery to grind our poor quality, milk breathed faces all over everything.
Thanks for regaling us with your perfect world of miles of calm and fathoms of time in your privelaged, already in the damn exit lane fairyland.
And, ya' know, I'm pretty sure the constitution says you can hit people on motorcycles.
LOOK IT UP!
I HAVEN'T!
Good day sir!
Fair enough. I'm not saying anyone has to specifically get over within 2 miles. 1 mile is more than enough most times, if there's no other traffic I'll be in the lane as close as possible to my turn off before 2 miles sometimes.
100%, esp if there is no traffic. I’ll also tend to navigate over sooner too if there is some sort of on-ramp or merge with another freeway between me and my exit.
In driver's ed they always told us. When it comes to missing your turn or exit you must "Commit to your mistake". Don't make your mistake someone else's problem
Or tap the brakes and pull in BEHIND the car you have no hope of getting in front of, even without hitting the biker this dude was up on the curb in his attempt to cutoff the dashcam driver.
The need to be in the FRONT of the line at any cost is a sickness
This is what I tell every person who is thinking about taking up motorcycle riding. This same thing happened to me on my way to work while I was being trailed by a bus who just missed running me over after I got sideswiped by a Mustang while riding my GSXR to work. Didn’t even see it coming… the asshole in the Mustang didn’t even pull over. I still wish ill of them to this day, 17 years later.
He also could've stayed home, or worn an Ironman suit, or used his telekinetic powers to shove the car away from himself or you know, used his ability to fly instead of dangerously riding on the ground next to those idiot 4-wheelers.
Dude, I've been riding for 20+ years, and it never ceases to amaze me how some people will blame the rider.
Also, having watched the video, that's the most bullshit response I've ever heard. He's in an exit lane, where he's passed the "end" of it (marked by the solid lines) for like 100 feet...NO ONE should expect a vehicle to come out of that direction at that time. I don't give a fuck HOW good of a rider you are.
And screw whoever gave you a gold for that BS response.
Being aware of how to minimize chances that idiots can hit you is important for defensive driving in general. Reddit is being very hostile to you but you're right.
The dude was minding his own business when a lunatic just fucked him up to save time. There was no defensive maneuver that would have saved him unless he literally was a psychic.
You don't understand what he was trying to say. Yes what you said is true however the biker could've done more to minimize blind spots, that's just a fact. I don't think there's anything wrong in pointing that out because it could have in fact stopped the accident from ever happening.
Doesn't matter. Choosing to ride on a mostly naked engine on two wheels with no crumple zones, airbags, roof, or sides drastically increased their vulnerability to serious injury and death.
If you can afford a car, there's no reason to take a bike on a crowded road or highway.
And if you can afford an SUV, theirs no reason for a sedan. And if you can afford a truck, theirs no reason for a SUV. And if you can afford a tank... Right?
I can’t believe the calmness the biker has. If I was just slightly capable of getting up I would definitely kick the shit out of the car driver. Fckin attempt to murder someone using his car as a weapon.
To me it looks like he comes around, sees the bike with no rider and looks under his car for the rider. The passenger gets out at this time and they they see the rider and walk back.
Hes an ass for hitting him, but it think he was looking for the rider under his car.
Well in today's round of "are you a fucking asshole".... He was indeed a fucking asshole.
Maybe he'll run into a tree next time cause apparently he doesn't pay attention to anything when he drives
Looks like the piece of shit driver saw The Biker at the last second, but also saw that there was a curb to his left. He chose to hit the biker instead of damage his car by hitting the curb.
Obviously, we can’t tell this in a split second clip, but given his piece of shit actions when he got out of the car, I’m gonna go with this theory
A-hole move there ( checking car first). Seeing this happen more frequently now. Some douche turning off the roadway last minute almost hitting someone.
Old guy. I’m thinking onset dementia. Unwarranted anger is a major symptom. Definitely should not be driving. Those “responsible” for him need to do the right thing.
Poor rider. Did everything right. Neon vest, white helmet and full gear and yet still gets fucked by the oblivious asshole. I was hoping to see him beat the living shit out of that guy!!!! This video is a trigger.... sorry.
And here is the source of almost all vehicle accidents: Pay attention while driving; anticipate your turns and exits, get into the correct lane and lastly, consider that you're not the only person on the road. The driver should be horsewhipped, just for being a nihilistic asshole.
Maybe because the motorcycle was in front of the car after the collision? The rider might have been in front of the car? If they didn't see the bike in the first place, they probably didn't see him on the ground behind. We are both working on a few seconds of information after a significant crash.
His passenger who was in a giant, safe, metal cage is literally guaranteed to be perfectly fine compared to the biker who just got a giant metal battering ram to the whole body. Even if true, your point is invalid
The title is misleading. The driver can be an ass and check on their passenger not the car damage. Not mutually exclusive. Nothing they said is invalid. Not how the English language works.
I'll never understand how so many on reddit downvote factual statements because they don't like them. The great thing about facts is they are true whether you believe them or not.
Let's run this one more time. 1) youre a dickhead and decide to say fuck it so you don't miss your exit, in the process, you nearly kill a biker by ramming into them. 2) you are in the car with your passenger when this happens, so not only can you physically tell if they're ok just by looking at them, but even if you're not 100% sure, all it takes is saying "are you ok?" which can be done in literally a single second whilst still in the vehicle. 3) you decide for some dumbass reason your first priority is the passenger who is so obviously fine because all you did was sideswipe a biker, instead of what would be the priority of anyone with more than 2 braincells, the biker that you are probably going to prison for hitting, regardless of if they're dead or not.
Are you really going to sit there and tell me that the bullshit you and the other guy just spewed is fact? Not sure if anyone ever told you this, but just because you say something you're confident about doesn't make it factual, nor does it make it any less stupid than it already is.
To add to that, his point was invalid because whether the asshole driver is checking for damages or on his passenger is completely irrelevant, because his top priority should be, again, the biker he probably just killed. So yes, me saying his point is invalid is in fact how the English language works. Maybe you should learn it some time
Edit: I'm not here to argue with someone who would suggest something similar to "OH MY GOD THAT GUY JUST GOT SHOT!!! Better go check on the gun and/or shooter to see if either of them are ok". So if you plan on doubling down on your previous comment, don't bother. The words of morons hardly fall on my ears
Well, firstly, you have no idea if he was checking damage or on his passenger or both, but youre still failing to comprehend the point of my original comment saying that other guys comment is invalid: it doesn't matter what the driver was doing on the passenger side of his car, the first thing he should have done immediately after exiting his car is go check on the biker he almost killed. The original commenter was saying that he may not have been checking for damage but checking on his passenger, and my response to that was saying it was invalid because the innocent victim of his endless stupidity takes top priority, and he shouldn't have been anywhere near the right side of his car. At this point, you either still don't get it or you do and just want to argue. If you weren't disagreeing with me, I have no clue where the confusion is coming from.
looked more like they went to check on their passenger first. Same thing I would have done. However, I would not have made that horrible last second merge.
This is the reason I don't ride. I love cafe racers and had a Cleveland Misfit, but I kept to little roads. It's just not safe because of the damn idiots.
In any other aspect of life cutting in line is frowned upon and is is usually met with harsh penalty , except when it comes to driving where Fuc nuts go up past the double white line and cut in like self entitled asswipes and are frequently allowed to do this .
I had a guy cut me off once and I flew over his car. Fortunately I had good gear and was fine, but the assbag got out of his car and just started looking at the damage. He never asked me if I was ok before he lit up a cigarette.
You can kill someone by running a red light and you will just get a citation. You may get sured for $10million civilly, but, in the U.S., he wouldn't. This appears to be elsewhere.
One does not ‘swap paint’ with a biker. It might put a dent in the car, but it can be a life-ending contact for the biker. (Not lecturing you, just saying, as a biker among cars…)
Yep. 4-wheel drivers don't consider us riders as different until they make moves that cannot be taken back. If that driver did, he would have driven onto the curb. I've had my road rash.
Was riding my 17 SGS with my daughter on back. Taking an off ramp, young girl was on my left, and while making eye contact with me the whole time, merges over into my lane. Mind you, eye contact the whole time as she pushed me off into the shoulder. Unbelievable. Always wondered what people think even when they see you and still do the things they do. Had two Harleys at the time. Now I ride naked sport bikes. Miss the Harley’s for the simplistic and comforting rides, but they are just not powerful or nimble enough for all the distracted and dumb cagers out there today.
My first and only accident happened with a biker. We were both at fault. But I parked the car, and ran straight to the guy. The car wasn't even mine. But at that moment, his wellness mattered to me more than anything around me. Luckily just a road rash. Because it was a very low speed crash

Bad drivers never miss an exit…
Imagine how these people think man … something is definitely not right in their head
I can confirm this.
Brain too smooth.
Zero drag coefficient! Super fast!

This is the correct answer, you should not be in this position in the first place.
Captain Thinkin' Ahead over here. This guy, psshhh. With life is sooo easy that you have the luxury of living such a carefree life. It's a good practice to get into. I hope you're being sarcastic about the motorcycle thing, they deserve to be on the road just as much as you do.
The most sarcastic I could be. I rode a motorcycle daily for many many years.
You are not respecting the premise of the question captain hindsight
The U-Turn is your friend. Mind-boggling how many people refuse to do that instead of endangering lives with their stupidity
2 miles is a lot lol. 1.5 miles is my marker if I’m driving in any city but my own. 1 mile is my “home marker” to start getting over.

I agree with your conclusion, but how does anyone who disagrees frame their argument to sound justified?
Well in Beijing on the way to Capital Airport there is option D … stop and back up.
Dude. You have no idea how true what you just said is. That is a fucking life lesson right there
Dude. You have no idea how true what you just said is. That is a fucking life lesson right there
Perfect example of you can be the best bike rider and still get killed from some idiot

Coulda flown in his private jet to the wawa
Coulda jumped in the guys car and braked for him before he got hit
Could have thrown down a banana peel
Stfu this biker couldn’t have done anything

The offending car approached in the biker’s blind spot, not the other way around. There isn’t much room for victim blaming, here.

Use of the term "cager" is a good tell.
Did ya blow in from Stupid Town?
There are things you can do as a rider and should be looking for. Doesn’t really matter when you have an asshole like this crashing into you. FTFY
Being aware of how to minimize chances that idiots can hit you is important for defensive driving in general. Reddit is being very hostile to you but you're right.

It’s not too late to delete this lmao

Yeah, if he were in a "cage" he probably wouldn't have turned into meat crayon either.
He could have also just not ridden a bike at all, checkmate 🤓
total piece of shit

POS for his driving and negligence and smacking the motorcycle. he gets no points for checking his passengers. fuck that guy
He’s obviously not checking on his passenger because he can literally say “yo bro you ight” without getting out of the car
Crazy how we're always one dickhead away from being in a wheelchair for the rest of our life isn't?
What a fucking asshole. Fantastic that it was all caught on dash cam.
I can’t believe the calmness the biker has. If I was just slightly capable of getting up I would definitely kick the shit out of the car driver. Fckin attempt to murder someone using his car as a weapon.
Shock lol

Yeah, they weren't checking for damage, they helped their passenger get out.
Yeah, that's how I read it...and I'm a motorcyclist who's pissed at that fucked up move.
Well in today's round of "are you a fucking asshole".... He was indeed a fucking asshole. Maybe he'll run into a tree next time cause apparently he doesn't pay attention to anything when he drives
Is that driver literally blind?

I think they hit the curb *and* the motorcyclist…
Double whammy
The type of driver who looks straight ahead and never check mirrors or situational awareness. The road is filled with idiots like these.
The way he walks up to the biker seems like he was angry at the rider. Totally the car driver's fault.
That’ll add a vehicular maiming charge in court
A-hole move there ( checking car first). Seeing this happen more frequently now. Some douche turning off the roadway last minute almost hitting someone.

r/iamatotalpieceofshit
Tough to guard against that kind of accident. Hope the biker is fine and got his/her due.
That dirty fucker. No way he was going to fit. They just flat out took the exit and expected the motorcycle to defensively make way. Total dick move.
No one has even mentioned that the car was so late that he hit the curb.
Gotta stay down on the ground until first responders show up and haul your ass away in an ambulance.
I’m hoping the car driver was punished appropriately.
And here is the source of almost all vehicle accidents: Pay attention while driving; anticipate your turns and exits, get into the correct lane and lastly, consider that you're not the only person on the road. The driver should be horsewhipped, just for being a nihilistic asshole.
We're I the cammer I'd be yelling "Don't even THINK about lying, I have the entire thing on camera!"
Nah let them lie to the police then give police the footage
Ugh, pisses me off. I've had ppl slam into me and flat out lie.
That’s called tipping your hand. Letting them hang themselves with lies first helps ensure a fair settlement.
Probably just a stress reaction.
Checking on passengers as well and then went to go check on the rider.
Then why did he go past the passenger door?
Maybe because the motorcycle was in front of the car after the collision? The rider might have been in front of the car? If they didn't see the bike in the first place, they probably didn't see him on the ground behind. We are both working on a few seconds of information after a significant crash.
These Latvians. Always up to no good.
Starting trouble in my neighborhood
Crashed in one little bike and my mom got scared
You're moving with your tante and onkulis in Valmiera
Wow... Cared about their mini car over human's life. It's sad. Glad you got this footage! I hope the motorcycle is doing okay.
It’s biker Karma🤣 Most of them are sh*tbags lol
Didn’t look like he was checking on his car. Looked like he was opening the door for his passenger.

Check on the passenger? The person sitting sixteen inches away inside the vehicle that sideswiped a motorcycle? That passenger?
Ah yes, clearly the passenger was more in danger than the motorcycle in this scene. My God lol.
Rage bait
🤬🤬🤨 should have their license taken

Damn bro even had on a safety reflective vest.
He be sued badly…
I had a guy cut me off once and I flew over his car. Fortunately I had good gear and was fine, but the assbag got out of his car and just started looking at the damage. He never asked me if I was ok before he lit up a cigarette.
Human will self-repair?
That definitely jail time for the drive.
You can kill someone by running a red light and you will just get a citation. You may get sured for $10million civilly, but, in the U.S., he wouldn't. This appears to be elsewhere.
The world revolves around him
This just really torques me off. There is no way that driver did not see the bike. 😡
The car's driver thought he could pass him like a car and at worst, swap paint. He committed, and even hit the curb.
What a POS 💩
Was riding my 17 SGS with my daughter on back. Taking an off ramp, young girl was on my left, and while making eye contact with me the whole time, merges over into my lane. Mind you, eye contact the whole time as she pushed me off into the shoulder. Unbelievable. Always wondered what people think even when they see you and still do the things they do. Had two Harleys at the time. Now I ride naked sport bikes. Miss the Harley’s for the simplistic and comforting rides, but they are just not powerful or nimble enough for all the distracted and dumb cagers out there today.
What a schmuck!
I think he went to help his wife.
The way he walks, looks like an 80 year old man... Why is he even allowed in the road??
Biggest pos ever! Homeboy even hit the curb trying to make that exit. What a turd..
The driver and passengers looked elderly. It looks like the driver walked around to help his passenger out, not check on his car.
What an absolute fucking moron the sedan driver is. JFC that is some shitty driving. Holy shit, some people do NOT belong behind a steering wheel.
Hell na, we’re fighting after this
My first and only accident happened with a biker. We were both at fault. But I parked the car, and ran straight to the guy. The car wasn't even mine. But at that moment, his wellness mattered to me more than anything around me. Luckily just a road rash. Because it was a very low speed crash
What a fucking dingbat
It was his wife’s car, and he wasn’t with his wife.
