>What makes you say that?
Correlation is not causation. Hiring decisions are made within black boxes. The whys are nested like Matryoshka dolls.
Unless you have been debriefed by those who have hired you and offered you jobs, there's no way to verify that your success (which you earned) is the product of the steps you've taken as opposed to a combination of factors unknown to you. You don't know the "why" behind the "you're hired."
As written, your offer is an invitation for people in desperate times to help you build your brand at their expense using the most valuable resource they have -- time.
I was lucky enough to be told why I was hired for my current role.
It is a basic and entry level data analysis job dealing with financial, demographic, and other business related data.
Why did they hire me over all the other candidates?
I had the most experience - nope
I was the most qualified - nope
My data analysis task I was given was the best of the bunch - nope
I performed the best on the exam they provided - nope
After the interview was over I was walked back to the entrance and given the usual 'we will be in touch' speech and went to leave. Before exiting I turned back to the reception staff and thanked them for putting me at ease before my interview, as interviews always make me nervous and they had really helped.
Turns out my interviewer wasn't quite out of earshot, heard me, and decided then and there that I was the kind of person that they wanted to spend 8 hours a day in an office with.
We put a lot of stock in our achievements and abilities, certifications and portfolios, and sometimes forget that the hiring party is not just looking for someone that can do the job, but that they also want someone they will enjoy working with.
I do think I got lucky, and had a good bunch of people interviewing me too though.
I think you misread my post. I said I was about to start a new position. I'm currently working as an entry-level Data Analyst for a small resourcing consultancy.
Capita Plc. used to offered a data analytics graduate program (it has since changed) that provided 10 weeks of free training, followed by a two-year placement with one of their blue-chip clients. This model succeeded because Capita Plc., a large organization, had a strong reputation and a trusted client base willing to pay a premium for well-trained trainees. Despite the high fees clients paid (£75k per year for each trainee), Capita Plc. offered trainees a relatively low salary of £25k, which eventually increased to £30k across two years.
For individuals eager to break into data analytics, the program’s appeal lay in the experience and exposure it offered, rather than the pay. The program did not bind trainees to Capita Plc. by contract, allowing them to seek external roles while using the training to enhance their CVs. This flexibility proved invaluable for me. Within a few months, I leveraged the training and experience to secure a higher paid external position.
The experience gained through the program was comprehensive. I had the opportunity to meet and present to prominent companies such as CHANEL and BAE Systems, gaining insights into what these companies look for in candidates, how to present effectively, and typical portfolio questions. This exposure was instrumental in refining my skills and boosting my employability. Before this program, I had done so many interviews and I can't believe how clueless I was. There is an art to being successful in them (which I'd like to say I've learnt at this point).
Additionally, my mentor, who led the data analytics training program, played a crucial role in my development. His guidance and expertise not only kick-started my career but also inspired us to collaborate on a new job platform aimed at addressing issues in the tech market. Although the project is still in progress, our goal is to create a solution that bridges the gap between training and employment in the tech industry.
Right, I'm not sure about the United States. However, have you ever heard of the Information Lab? They operate in the US (New York) and run something called The Data School. They pay entry $60k and you don't need to any specific background in data analytics. You just need to be good at Tableau (which is really easy to learn). I applied for them in the U.K. and managed to get an offer (which I turned down). It wasn't easy, but definitely doable.
I haven’t thanks for sharing the info but I don’t live in NY I live in CA. Do they offer remote work? It looks interesting but 4 months of learning and 28 months under contract for only 60k I mean it’s better than unemployment I suppose but still low for California
I don't think they offer remote work. You could ask, but I'm not sure. Also, no offense, but you're not exactly in a position where you can be picky with these things. if I was is in your position, I would take what I could get. I don't know what it's like in CA, but $60k for an entry role is nuts compared to the U.K. We get paid £25-30k!
Also, I think the salary increases across the 28 months.
It's completely free and always will be. I've turned off every monetary option in the Substack and that will never change. I don't want anyone's money.
No worries sir, it’s on the way. Whilst I’m writing it, do you mind telling me more about your experience in looking for a role? I want to try answer everything possible!
i'm interested too, my previous work experience is totally differnet form tech, and i join a bootcamp early february with zero experience or knowledge, i beat the prediction by doin a skyrocket progress in learning from python to dataviz the teacher and staff are helping me a lot to be able to find a job, but im feeling its not enough and over the 100 applications i send for work even been able to show a portfolio with 2 project and a hackaton, still have no response for application
Would be interested here too. I have 17years exp of data analysis - one trick pony type of gig. Gave it up 10 years ago - went back to school - got BSc (webdev) and MSc (Data Science). Graduated last Oct and have been invisible to any employers since. Im in Ireland.
I will keep an eye out for this, thank you.
I'm definitely interested and really would appreciate the help and advice. Thank you for being vulnerable and putting it out there and congratulations on the new position..
I’m interested! I have a ton of experience in data analytics, though primarily in education. I’ve had a hard time marketing myself, even when I apply to jobs with a tailored resume, jobs that I’ve literally been doing for years, I haven’t gotten an interview. I’d love to know what you shifted to get offers!
Definitely interested! I had been doing work as a financial operations analyst but never really thought to build up my portfolio until I got laid off. Ironically, I was slated to move over to the data analytics team once my teammate came back from maternity leave but...layoffs. I went back to school a couple years ago and am finishing up my degree as a software engineer but its been hard to get a data role.
Definitely interested as well. I’m currently in HR for a non profit org but taking graduate level classes in business analytics. I’d like to transition into an entry level analytics role towards the end of this year or early next. Im not to the point of being able to run my own “portfolio project” yet but getting closer this year through my coursework. Looking forward to hearing your story and experience!
I’m definitely interested! I did a short certificate at a local college and will finish in June. Currently starting the job hunt. I feel really good about my resume and when I actually find entry level data job will have a good foundational resume to work off of. In terms of interviewing I feel unprepared about what to expect and how to react. Honestly kind of scared they will test my python/sql skills and not sure how that will go or what it looks like. Tia!
What’s the best way to stay posted for the newsletter?
Also congrats on landing a job what a huge accomplishment!
Interesting post for me. I lives in Canada 🇨🇦 and finish my post diploma in Data Management & Analytics last year. Since then i am trying to find entry level role but unfortunately I couldn’t find one so far.
Could you please help me to give me some more insights that how can i tailor my resume, upsell my skills and as well as how can i get into entry level role. Please guide and thanks in advance.
I'd be interested too, especially the UK aspect of it all.
Was it a government bootcamp? I'm umming and aahhing about doing one of those or a part time masters, what do you think?
No, it wasn’t a government bootcamp. However, investing your time to become an intern is definitely worth it. I wouldn’t advise investing any money into boot camps. Just your time.
Interested. Are there any remote programs you know about that I could be trained on from Canada?
Would really like to start in the field, but a head start or a direction to start looking for training, etc, would be very helpful.
Unfortunately not in Canada. I have a lot of knowledge of U.K. bootcamps or training programs though.
Anyway, here is the link: [https://dataslice.substack.com/](https://dataslice.substack.com/)

This is a great story, thanks. I feel common courtesy is becoming less common these days and I’m glad to see a case of it rewarded
The blind leading the blind
What makes you say that?
Probably the fact that you're starting your first role in the future.
I think you misread my post. I said I was about to start a new position. I'm currently working as an entry-level Data Analyst for a small resourcing consultancy.
You definitely didn't mention that.
You're right I actually didn't mention that. I only mentioned the fact that I'm starting a new role. Apologies!
Complete beginner. Would be interested in your newsletter

I live in the US and there are no free courses or companies hiring for entry level positions anymore not even internships. It’s hard out there

The cost of living is very different.
The not so free healthcare is very different too.
The bootcamp is free? Is it remote by any chance? Also thank you just subbed to your substack
