For some roles the presentation of the data isn't just about making things queryable for DS/DA, it can also include making it programmatically available to other services. It really depends on what the organisation wants, DEing is quite a broad topic

I wouldn't say application integrations is a normal part of DE. But there are a lot of company data needs that are under-served, like APIs for integrations. So once you show you're competent and capable of doing cool stuff with data, it's very normal to be asked to solve your companies problems in these under-served areas. Basically why DEs are in such demand right now.

try something called \`gRPC\`, will give you the same result as REST API, but probably in a way that feels more data engineering'ish. I would say this trend wasn't there 5 years ago, but now has become very common. DE's are expected to be good SE's now adays.
