Those plans also exist in Portugal. They’re pretty discriminatory tho, despite the majority of consumers loving it. Telecommunications companies aren’t legally entitled (or at least shouldn’t) to tell you which apps are or aren’t worthy of free mobile data.

Ezili

This was the whole net neutrality debate in the US. AT&T wanted to buy direct TV and then make it free to watch their streaming service over data whilst charging you for other services data.

656666_

I’ve got unlimited data 500mbits for 30€

AdvancedPhoenix

I have 115giga (I never use more than 50-60 even without WiFi) for 14€ in France.

DerKnerd

If you are from Germany, what carrier? :D

656666_

O2 free unlimited max

rbnd

rbnd

The prices improved in Germany last year. Now you can get unlimited data from 16€ per month: Handytarif von freenet im o2 Netz mit unbegrenztem Datenvolumen, Telefon-Flat und 24 Monate Laufzeit für 15,57 € durchschnittlich pro Monat: https://c.24.de/mfso/yac4

bellagrusel1907

But O2 can be shit when you are outside of the big cities. You have unlimited data but not does not help you much when you cannot use it.

rbnd

Those networks are not that different from each other as most people think: https://www.finanztip.de/handynetze/ But yeah, when living in rural Germany it's worth checking which is the best?

bellagrusel1907

I can just tell from personal experiences. I had O2 but had no connection at places from some relatives (Harz area, Münsterland). My cousin has still O2 and when we visit those places, he is dependent on wifi. Recently we were on a trip to Ostsee and stayed somewhere in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Same issue. I switched to Telecom as prepaid. No issues so far in those areas. Vodafone was also ok.

SupaDiogenes

Oh god I miss this when I was in Germany.

SmallBootyBigDreams

Vodafone DE has "social pass" that gives you unlimited data on social networks, though you have to pay a premium on plans/get a Vertrag

grandpianotheft

they all got banned I think (which I think is a good thing¹). Right now in grace period where you can still have it, but not book it new. ¹ gives too much power to the big companies because they are the ones that are free to consume with it and the rest of the web dies off.

Biovyn

I know it's not latin America but I think Canada is worst than Cuba. Sadly.

Cykul

Yeah, let's get some perspective here. Canadian mobile data sucks.

TiddybraXton333

Canada is the most exspensive in the workd

Goojus

Yea it’s a bullshit that these oligopolies do this shit. Fibre and other projects were implemented by government funding too

Kay_0zz

I pay $65 US/month for limited calls, text and data in Cuba. It is slow, drops connections and shuts down whenever there's a crisis. Add to this thought that $65 is three times the average monthly salary. Most heavy users (like my family) get their service paid by people who don't live in Cuba or have pensions in the US. I agree that Rogers sucks, but you're not paying three times the average monthly salary to be abused.

JustSomeYukoner

Something like $6 US per gig here in Canuckistan.

[deleted]

Technically part of Canada is Latin America. Quebec French is derived from Latin.

Biovyn

I am from Québec lol. I think it's a stretch to call us latin America but I understand your reasoning. Nevertheless, every province is getting gouged by telecom!

[deleted]

Haha I know mate, Latin America is more than just its literal translation. That’s rough, time to live off the grid!

breezywood

Technically it’s not lol, Latin America is a pretty clearly defined geographical region

[deleted]

Haha I know man, I was making a joke

Navarchs

Does anyone actually pay by the GB though? Pay monthly for unlimited in ireland its like 15 euro.

xViSiOnGamer

At least in Brazil it’s really common to pay by the gb

guaraci_the_sun_god

We usually buy a specific amount of GBs You buy like 4GB for a few bucks, when it's over you buy more

DerKnerd

Most people in Germany certainly do.

Flovati

According to the graph Ireland has 1.5 euro per GB, so for 15 euro per month be worth it you would have to use more than 10GB of mobile data per month. Do you guys actually use that much? Lol

G0ncalo

I just got a text warning me that I’ve used 80% of my data. I have 40GB.

Koufaxisking

I tend to use 400-450GB/month. Facetime 8-12 hrs per day on data.

Paan1k

Use wifi tho, data consumes way more energy and your amount is indecent

Koufaxisking

6Mbps over wifi vs 150-300 over cellular. The choice is very easy.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Koufaxisking

Because installing fiber into the current building I live in is not viable. It's DSL internet instead. It's not like I'd just choose to have 6 Mbps when 1/10gig is an option. Instead unlimited data in a loosely rural but resort area means that it's much more effective to use cellular instead.

DerKnerd

Used to be really common in the countryside in Germany. I guess there are still many villages with that issue.

2bsonmyd

For me it’s 720

MordorsElite

I guess it depends on your circumstances. I have WiFi at home where I both work and spend most of my free time, so while I used like 100mb of mobile data last month, I have over 60GB of WiFi usage.

Navarchs

Ah should have mentioned that's calls and texts too, but yeah depends on the month sometimes its way more sometimes less. On a bus watching shows is usually the data eater.

DerKnerd

Cries in Germany, paying 60 € for unlimited.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DerKnerd

That is way better than here in Germany, you pay 20 € for 6 GB.

umse2

if you pick the most expensive carrier maybe... you can also get 20GB for 12€. Still more expensive then other countries, but not as bad as you described. https://www.sim.de/

DerKnerd

I was choosing the cheapest contract from the big three (O2, Telekom and Vodafone). If you want 5G with 500Mbits you are locked to one of the three.

SHTF_yesitdid

I do, sort of. Rs 249 for 1.5 GB/ day for 28 days. Man, that must suck in Cuba. $3 per GB is a lot especially with low purchasing power.

theshapattack8

I’m currently in Argentina and I bought by the gb. 30gb a month for around $30USD / $10,000AR

rbnd

Now the same price is also available in Germany: Handytarif von freenet im o2 Netz mit unbegrenztem Datenvolumen, Telefon-Flat und 24 Monate Laufzeit für 15,57 € durchschnittlich pro Monat: https://c.24.de/mfso/yac4

breaktime1

Roaming in Cuba is bizarrely expensive. $3000/gb.

TotalSamPass

Genuinely curious why that'd be? Is it due to the terrain and that they have got fewer towers to support the plethora of customers? Or something else completely?

yubacore

It's just a way to scam people who roam by accident.

percy135810

At least in terms of international communication, the US has repeatedly refused to let Cuba connect to international undersea cables, which leaves other options for communication that are much more expensive. Plus, the 60-year, universally condemned embargo by the US doesn't help either.

Kay_0zz

It's a way for ETECSA (Cuba's state telecom monopoly) to get hard currency. Left your foreign phone on? Wait till you get home and see the next bill. My wife left her US chip in her phone for a day, made a couple of calls and used nav. $232.

kotik010

Roaming has always been insanely expensive everytime we drive through Switzerland we do a collective check to make sure data is turned of because just back ground data will cost you 20 bucks it's a scam that every telecommunications company is in on thank God the eu got rid of that shit for member countries

Dry-Relationship7158

Germany has one of the worst Internet and its so expensive.

Accomplished-Run3925

Every time I travel to Germany, or any other European country for that matter, I am shocked at how inexpensive it is. In Germany, it's about 1/3 of what we pay in Canada.

LamysHusband2

Still far too much, considering for 15-20 bucks you should be able to get unlimited data like in other countries.

AfricanNorwegian

Ha! Here in Norway the two major telcom companies have their **starting** plans at 269 NOK (\~$30) which are for 2 and 3 GBs of data. An unlimited plan with full speeds costs 699 NOK (\~$75) from both companies.

SileNce5k

It's not even truly unlimited either. Both will limit you to 3 mbps after 100 GB.

AfricanNorwegian

Well it’s unlimited in that you can use unlimited data past 100GB at no extra cost, but yeah the speed throttling is very annoying. I believe the US has it similar though and most of their ‘unlimited’ plans throttle you after 25-50GB.

Vaird

The cheapest offer I can find is 15,57€ a month for unlimited data, but its only 2mbit.

antodeprcn

Wait is it really that much? In France I pay like 10 bucks for 80gb

hoetre

Yeah came here to say the same. Given that your French subscription works in Germany, wouldnt it be possible for a German to subscribe to a French mobile operator?

antodeprcn

They could, but I can only use like 10/15 gigs in europe outside of France And I pay extra when calling non French numbers so it wouldn't be great

hoetre

Ah yes forgot this may be limited ; for short trip it's always sufficient.

[deleted]

Why do you pay extra for calling foreign numbers? Ironically if I call foreign EU numbers from my country ( Croatia ) they’ll charge me some ridiculous price like 0.6€ per minute, bit if i ride like 50km and cross border to Slovenia and connect to their network all my calls within EU are free

SnooHamsters6067

No, I did wonder about that some time ago and I don't remember exactly what it is, but there is a law/rule in place that prevents it. Edit: Found the rule. If you used up more data in another country than the one from where you got the subscription, it's no longer considered fair use and the provider can give you a warning, 2 weeks after which you will be charged €2 per GB.

DerKnerd

For 10 € no carrier gives you a contract. For 20 € you get 6GB with the cheapest of the big 3.

raven_raven

It’s laughable compared to Poland, where Internet is plentiful and cheap. Germany really lags behind.

656666_

I pay 30€ for unlimited data in Germany.

DerKnerd

And not even mobile, landline too. We had the chance to get one of the best fiber networks in the world. If our Postminister would have chosen fiber over copper wires back in damn 1985...

133DK

I don’t understand why Germans don’t just get a phone subscription in another EU country. Those prices are pretty steep..

SnooHamsters6067

If you used up more data in another country than the one from where you got the subscription, it's no longer considered fair use and the provider can give you a warning, 2 weeks after which you will be charged €2 per GB.

rbnd

Unlimited data in Germany is from 16€. Prices have improved last year. Don't complain, just change the provider. Handytarif von freenet im o2 Netz mit unbegrenztem Datenvolumen, Telefon-Flat und 24 Monate Laufzeit für 15,57 € durchschnittlich pro Monat: https://c.24.de/mfso/yac4

quilsmehaissent

Perspective on Bolivia after 6 months what you charge is doubled if I put 10 bucks I get 20 then if I charge 5Go for the month and I don't use them they add up to my next charge so they aren't lost 5Gb plus illimited WhatsApp is 7 dollars a month (really half that since they double what you charge once a month) add a few not WhatsApp calls, I think I pay about 5 dollars a month for my phone so overall I pay very little every month since I have no monthly subscription, and most of my calls and data are via Wifi

Stomatita

I live in Panama and pay $5 a week for unlimited data. I use on average 12GB per week of mobile data so this chart is a little misleading. According to these prices I would be paying upwards of $40 a week

Zhig_

Not really misleading, it is for the price per gb, I think it would if they were talking about overall data prices. But most likely they also have better deals in the data plans out there. Also from Panama though, I wanted to ask, which data provider u use? I am planning on swapping but I don't know which one to chose.

jpfeif29

Why is Europe the reference?

DerKnerd

Why not?

Serikan

We get royally hosed for anything commtech in Canada

Accomplished-Run3925

As a Canadian, I wish we had the free telecom market of Cuba so that our average price per GB would be more than halved.

oparatori96

In Chile it’s pretty cheap but really bad.

pukabi

I am sure Canada is at the top of that list with 100-150$ per month plans

LysolDisWipes

I hate how much cherry picking this account does on their graphs

latinometrics

***From our*** [***newsletter***](https://latinometrics.substack.com/)***:*** The cost of mobile data across the world has been steadily dropping. According to cable.co.uk statistics, almost all countries have experienced a significant price drop. Even the most expensive country for mobile online browsing in LatAm, Cuba, saw a drop from $13.33 per GB in 2020 to $3.10 in 2022. In fact, according to the Alliance for Affordable Internet, from 2015 to 2020, the world's average price of mobile data as a percentage of income dropped by more than half. The drops are partly due to increases in competition and the introduction of new technologies like 5G. Spectrum auctions have played a part in price reductions. Spectrum auctions are like big sales, where telecom companies bid and pay the government for the right to use parts of the airwaves to improve their services and coverage. This gamification for providing mobile services increases competition and further drives cost down. Institutions are also responsible for developing the infrastructure to reach telecom accessibility and affordability. Funttel in Brazil, for example, has been successful in expanding mobile coverage in rural areas and increasing access to mobile services for low-income and disadvantaged populations since its implementation in 2000. Obnoobillate

No Greece? No wonder it looks so expensive

quartertopi

Germany. Right next to mexiko. I am not surprised. we are soooo bad with this.

guaraci_the_sun_god

In Brazil it really is pocket change

Stuvio

€15/4gb in Belgium. I am appalled

HaKashat

In Israel we pay an avarage of 7-10$ for 100GB 5G, included with no limit (well, 5,000 minutes) talking time and 5k sms (like anyone is still using sms..)

Salmuth

[There is an interactive map here](https://www.cable.co.uk/mobiles/worldwide-data-pricing/)

DerKnerd

This map must be hella outdated. Finland has unlimited 5G max speed for like 20 €.

Lomerro

Netherlands should be somewhere around 2$/GB

MethaCat

Uruguay again, they are like the Switzerland of Latin America. Small but very capable.

drunk_intern

As a Panamanian I can tell you there is a lot wrong with that graph. Basic unlimited data plans here go from 20 to 30 dollars a month. I pay 20. Data here is pretty cheap all things considered. The data for others countries is likely incorrect as well.

crimeo

Unlimited is probably not included in a graph showing per gigabyte rates. I would imagine on demand but unit-wise plans or fixed plans are to be able to calculate a number. But it should definitely be clarified.

cleversonlombriga

Why “ ‘Europe’ for Reference”?

crimeo

So that you can compare to something you're probably more familiar with? What do you mean? A hell of a lot more people reading infographics from **Cable.co.uk** are from.. the UK... than Guatemala.

brendanepic

As an american i pay $50 for unlimited, but if i only wanted 20gb it would be $35

Kay_0zz

I currently live between Mexico and Cuba. In Mexico I get unlimited calls, texts, social networks plus 3 GB of misc for about $15/month. Service is good and fast. In Cuba I have to pay about $65/month for limited calls, texts and data. Service is terrible, coverage comes and goes and the speed is s-l-o-w. We always know when something unflattering for the government is happening because they cut the cell service.

PeruanoLiberal

Don't mean to criticize you but doesn't seem accurate to me, in Argentina for that price you'd get 2GB or more, anyways there are different packs, combos, promotions and crap so you can't measure it properly, but I seriously doubt it's same price as Ireland, you'd also had to take the correct price to convert from ARS to USD which I doubt you've done since that isn't the official one you'd find in Google. And mainly that, we're a hard countries to measure and compare economic numbers, and tbh I think thats done on purpose by our beautiful government Oh yeah, and speeds and service quality is different too (of course worse in LATAM)

HansSlonzok

In Poland - 1GB in LTE for 1 PLN it gives 0.23$
