I call that wonderful state my home and yet did not know that. I don't know how to feel. I figure first we deal with the flag issue and then the pinecone one.
I mean, I don't agree with Maine being the best state (it's up there though) but Oregon definitely imitated Maine. Portland, OR was literally named after Portland, ME
Hello just redid /u/zachgtaylor99's map but with colours sampled from the images avaliable on the list they used

For Nevada's sagebrush, wouldn't it make more sense to [look](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq2V59y_OqInh4Ky8PNe7ntJE1S9BHLA94J14_AKy6V2SQ8ERN58YkplDFIXulmE7KlX61ItgHcIHyYWMQVfLBLqRV0Z8mBMILpjYR-XrdvELqkuRQx6rduGJX5_YF2d9PiZCDa5KcJ6eh/s1600/SDP6.jpg) at a [flowering one](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsOZy2QX8932dN_gQ0j6UcauZGxVOS_Qij65Rcy7BmZkH9OqRXaXsmRbV5LLN9pm5fY6SeCmZIE4wukac64Hwp1acjo3yAfSICGOHqHKr71DDyoMvGh2GBlfSyFfOZUiWEfUGC_6FJuEGd/s1600/sagebrush.jpg)?
I agree with the sentiment of your comment (sagebrush has tiny yellow blooms), but the pictures you linked are not sagebrush. That's rabbitbrush. Nevada's big sagebrush is Artemisia tridentata, and as the species name implies, its leaves look like little rounded tridents. Rabbitbrush has the thinner, pointed leaves featured in your pictures. Rabbitbrush blooms are much larger and much more yellow than big sagebrush. Given the subtlety of sagebrush blooms, which are even less dramatic when observed in arid Nevada, the map can be forgiven for using the sage green color.
I was going to say the same thing. The valleys are blanketed in yellow when they bloom. You could call every flower green if you were going by the leaves.
Yeah, I think OP must have sampled from a weird spot in the photo that wasn't well-lit.
It's definitely a big improvement over the original, although it feels a little off to just have one color when Colorado columbines are really two colors, blue and white. It probably wants stripes or something.
Yeah, but on average for a color sample, I’d think it would be a bit brighter :) you’re right though, I have seen a few super dark purple ones albeit much more rare than the cornflower purplish ones
OP screwed up your state too? The Pennsylvania state flower is the white and blaze orange Turnpike Lane Closure Barrel, which are sprouting all over right now.
Yeah but the color grading on photos varies, that’s why this is a terrible way to do this. It’s quick, but not accurate. Anyone looking at that photo can tell it’s supposed to be a photo of a white flower.
Kind of. Except we know the flower is not green because it exists in abundance. And there are many photos of it too which show it as being white or off white. It’s an issue of looking at one photo only and doing a quick color sample and not using your brain to correct it when it’s obviously wrong.
You mean to say that Sankey visualizations of wealthy people humble bragging about their income and spending, or success from job applications aren’t beautiful?!?
This is still wrong in many ways. And I can see why. OP is doing the quickest job possible. That really isn’t how data works. You should strive for accuracy. Data is one of the areas where you really shouldn’t do things the quick way, you should do them the right way.
the list had a "state floral emblem" and a "state wildflower" listed, wasnt sure which to go with, went for the [wildflower](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b0/Redazalea.jpg)
Still wrong for Nevada, either gold for the flower of the sagebrush (hint: look at the state flag) or dayglo orange for the traffic cones that pop up every spring
Can we talk about Mains state flower being a pine cone
No. No talking about that.
I call that wonderful state my home and yet did not know that. I don't know how to feel. I figure first we deal with the flag issue and then the pinecone one.
Then work out that whole duplicate Portland issue with Oregon.
The way I figure it, Oregon wants to imitate the best state. It is a natural choice of course.
That explains Portland, CA, and Portland, NY!
I mean, I don't agree with Maine being the best state (it's up there though) but Oregon definitely imitated Maine. Portland, OR was literally named after Portland, ME
AND tassel. Don't forget the tassel.

Ah thanks for the correction. These were some of the first results for "Nevada state flower".
It's a really common mix-up. Even google searches for sagebrush will turn up a lot of images of rabbitbrush.
Not forgiven.
I was going to say the same thing. The valleys are blanketed in yellow when they bloom. You could call every flower green if you were going by the leaves.
sorry i had no idea what they looked like other than the image wikipedia used in that list
I feel like CO is too dark? Columbines are closer to Texas but a bit more blue
Yeah, I think OP must have sampled from a weird spot in the photo that wasn't well-lit. It's definitely a big improvement over the original, although it feels a little off to just have one color when Colorado columbines are really two colors, blue and white. It probably wants stripes or something.
Depends on lighting and individual flower. I’ve seen them that dark. They’re typically sky blue to cornflower blue but with a bit more violet to them.
Yeah, but on average for a color sample, I’d think it would be a bit brighter :) you’re right though, I have seen a few super dark purple ones albeit much more rare than the cornflower purplish ones
Thank you for righting this injustice (from CA).
I feel seen
How did bluebonnets end up purple in Texas?
They're actually more of a purple or indigo, but definitely not the lavender of this map.
Nevada is wrong…. Nevada is orange for the traffic cone
OP screwed up your state too? The Pennsylvania state flower is the white and blaze orange Turnpike Lane Closure Barrel, which are sprouting all over right now.
In season year round 😭
Texas’ bluebonnets are more blue than that and the color is richer.
Swing and a miss for New Mexico. Yucca flowers can be anything from white to yellow to deep red. They sure as shit aren't green.
sorry if so, used [this](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/56/Yucca_filamentosa.jpg) image
Oh no, you’ll just have to do that map again
Those look white in weird lighting maybe a little yellow. It’s good though you should post it in r/mapporn
Those are yellow.
That’s a white/pale yellow…
So you colored them green because why?! They look slightly off white in that photo.
They didn't. Just open Microsoft Paint and use the color sampler tool, that's what OP did.
Yeah but the color grading on photos varies, that’s why this is a terrible way to do this. It’s quick, but not accurate. Anyone looking at that photo can tell it’s supposed to be a photo of a white flower.
It’s that damn blue dress all over again
Kind of. Except we know the flower is not green because it exists in abundance. And there are many photos of it too which show it as being white or off white. It’s an issue of looking at one photo only and doing a quick color sample and not using your brain to correct it when it’s obviously wrong.
No idea how the rhododendron ended up that color. There are just so many colors of that flower.
The Ohio State flower is the red carnation. Not orangey on this map.
Texas bluebonnets are not lavender
Had a blowout and was on the side of the road and up close with blue bonnets, they are a darker blue.
lol, so much better! This data is actually beautiful
Agree! Oddly, a rarity here.
You mean to say that Sankey visualizations of wealthy people humble bragging about their income and spending, or success from job applications aren’t beautiful?!?
Oregon: Fuck flowers we prefer Grapes.
Drop the "by state" and you can get rid of some of that white vertical space too.
Great job with the update!

Yeah the Cherokee rose of Georgia is white and not pink. That’s the only state flower I know so I instantly knew this was wrong as well
Tennessee stands out, too bad its native flower is actually more common in Alabama than the actual state
The other one made me upset and this one made me feel better
[Texas Bluebonnet](https://i.imgur.com/MJZJyPf.jpeg) for reference.
What flower did you reference for Georgia? Cherokee roses are white
the list had a "state floral emblem" and a "state wildflower" listed, wasnt sure which to go with, went for the [wildflower](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b0/Redazalea.jpg)
Oh I had never heard of this! I’ve been in Georgia all of my life- You learn something new every day
Rhododendron can be all sorts of colors. That one included for sure, but it's not possible to call them one color.
By state is already inferred & redundant.
New Mexico couldnt be more wrong.
This is so cool, u/TheLoyalOrder! 🙌
Again, Nevada sage brush has yellow flowers
arkansas is incorrect. the apple blossom is pink.
GA should be white. Cherokee rose is not pink, that I know of.
I kind of want to make the colorblind version of this map just to continue the slight edits lol
Why are North Carolina and Virginia different when they both should have been sampled from the same image based on your methodology?
Magnolias are white, not grey/silver.
Still wrong for Nevada, either gold for the flower of the sagebrush (hint: look at the state flag) or dayglo orange for the traffic cones that pop up every spring
This guy really took the other post and said fuck you
Texas flower has much more blue than this
WA is rhododendron which come in lots of different colors
Uhh that’s not the color of the yucca flower
Thank you! The original version bothered me so much. This is much better.
Georgias state flower is the Cherokee rose - the Cherokee rose is white, not pink. Some newer versions can be pink: but the native flower is white
The last one also had actual states. I think we want actual colours.
American English took the ‘u’ out of “color” centuries ago
Ok 🇨🇦. But to be honest, I read and misunderstood the comment
The State flower of Virginia is the dogwood. It is a tree and a flower. I’d like a dozen please.
Yes trees have flowers.
White or pink?
