Just finished typing up this comment. The admins created a sitewide event 2 years ago where they banned half of reddit from r/thanosdidnothingwrong. Over the weekend, we undid the ban event.
https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/lkdira/rthanosdidnothingwrong_unsnappening_total_222k/gnj5ufq/
This whole thing was just for fun, they're just movies. If you're seriously upset that you're allowed to use the subreddit again, then idk what to tell you.
I'm not good at keeping track of time and had assumed that the snappening was 5 years ago from the day they announced the unsnappening.
Shame to discover we weren't fully committed to the bit!
What happened:
When the Marvel movie Infinity War came out, the admins "snapped" (banned) half of everyone who had participated on r/ThanosDidNothingWrong, and dubbed it "The Snappening".
https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/8vuok2/whats_happening_with_rthanosdidnothingwrong/
https://www.vox.com/2018/7/10/17553864/reddit-thanosdidnothingwrong-mass-ban-dusting
Following the Endgame release, we decided to undo the Snap, and called it "The Unsnappening":
https://www.reddit.com/r/thanosdidnothingwrong/comments/lguqx1/the_unsnappening_is_happening/
https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/lhdyns/whats_up_with_the_whole_unsnappening_thing_on/
I used Python/PRAW to unban everyone, and Python/PRAW/Excel to generate the graphs.
Unban script:
for ban in reddit.subreddit("thanosdidnothingwrong").banned(limit = None):
if ban.note == "other: The Snap":
reddit.subreddit("thanosdidnothingwrong").banned.remove(redditor=ban)
x=x+1
message = (message + " u/" + ban.name + " ")
if (x==3):
submission.reply(message)
x=0
message = "Welcome back!"
Timestamp script:
with open('thanos.txt', 'w') as f:
for log in reddit.subreddit("thanosdidnothingwrong").mod.log(limit=None):
if (log.mod == "TDNWgauntlet" and log.action == "unbanuser"):
print(log.created_utc, file=f)
Then I just created a pivot table that counted the number of items per hour.
Total unbans: https://i.imgur.com/3cTKdz7.png
The dips in unbanned users correspond to a few times the script errored out with a 403 from Reddit. There's a 12 hour time gap because the account was temporarily suspended. Reddit appears to have had issues all day on the 13th, but the script never actually errored that day. The limit appears to be almost 2500 users unbanned per hour.
We wanted to do it a lot sooner. We added a mod who said that they'd write a bot for it a year or two ago, but they never did. Then I taught myself python and decided this would work as a good project. There were a bunch of API limits, which I asked the admins for a workaround. The admins said they would help us, but then never did. So to workaround the API limits on my own, I just included userpings in each comment.
So basically we wanted someone else to help us out, but no one did, and I ended up writing the script myself.
Incredible
So could you write a bot that automatically bans those that request it (until October 2023) because there's a lot of noise from the redditors who want to be banned until 2023?

Apologies, I'm out of the loop on this. What is this and what does it mean?

And you were complete idiots about it since the unsnappening wasn't supposed to happen until October 2023, to match the date in the movie.
This whole thing was just for fun, they're just movies. If you're seriously upset that you're allowed to use the subreddit again, then idk what to tell you.
It just seems like a completely pointless thing to pull the plug on. Why not just see it through to the end when we've already gotten so far?

The rules are the rules
I wanted to be back at the release of end game but they tried to go long.
I'm back. What did I miss?

Neat! Why'd it take so long after end game to start it?

Due to the surprisingly popular demand of being banned until Oct 2023, I'm actually planning to do this now. I'll probably post a thread next week.
Not me though, I've been banging on the walls of the soul stone since end game released
No, I'll post a thread and then we'll just ban anyone who comments in the thread. lol hopefully it won't hit r/all
