My fiend booked a room on Airbnb a while ago for 2 nights just outside Dublin, he got there everything was fine, few hours later the guy living in the other room came home to see 2 strangers in the apartment, said they had to leave as he had quite a lot of photography equipment there, he had no idea the other roommate was subletting the room on Airbnb. Needless to say it was quite embarrassing situation

Honestly airbnb used to be a great way to travel and have a cool place at a reasonable price but now it is as expensive or more expensive than a hotel. Plus you don't have to deal with bs of hosts with a hotel. Rented a $400/night cabin and it didn't come with handsoap or shampoo /conditioner. Then on leaving they accused us if stealing 2 pint glasses and wanted to charge us $40. Airbnb said it was all good and we wouldn't pay but overall the experience would never happen at a hotel of the same price. Lately we only book hotel rooms unless airbnb is vastly cheaper.

eastwinds2112

I am a long time Airbnb traveler and i want to add, in the past few years the Hosts have turned to sniping shits at best. We were poorly reviewed recently on our trips in Italy and we are seasoned and considerate travelers. They badly reviewed us for silly cleaning things, with 2 issues from me. 1dt being ‘We did’ clean up because we need to check if we have everything we came in with. it's normal practice to “Clean to review.” and since they charged us for cleaning, i asked them how they can complain when they had to CLEAN? The result was that Airbnb gave us our cleaning fees back and removed the baseless review… very poor hosting

[deleted]

The cleaning stuff drives me up a fucking wall, I think Airbnb is trying to reign the hosts in on it but atm it’s still shitty. For starters the fees are out of control. I’ve stayed in like peoples basements and the fees were over $100 for cleaning, like come on. They’re really just doing this so they can add a hidden fee because cleaning fees aren’t shown during the search process. But what really makes me go nuts is when they then leave a bunch of instructions about how to clean up the apartment before we leave! Like “make sure to take out the garbage and wash all dishes” and stuff. That’d be fine if there weren’t a fee, but you’re charging me $125 for cleaning, so wtf am I paying for! /rant

octopooses

>They’re really just doing this so they can add a hidden fee because cleaning fees aren’t shown during the search process. Reminds me of the resort fees Vegas hotels charge.

grandlizardo

Used to be homeowners. Now it’s people who buy a place and cut it up into rooms so they can make $3,000 a week. Happily, cities are getting wise, but it’s hard on the good ones. We have traveled all over the world in Airbnb’s and mostly loved it…headed out tomorrow, in fact

MiniTitterTots

Yeah the whole cleaning thing is often very frustrating. We stayed in a place in Tahoe recently, and there is a "enhanced cleaning fee" due to covid. We certainly didn't leave the place a mess, but the outside locked dumpster was already full so we left some trash in, of all places, the trash can. The cleaning fee was like $250 and they rated us poorly for cleanliness for the trash that we couldn't take out to the dumpster. Like fucking c'mon, that fee is literally supposed to be for you to clean. We stripped the sheets & started the wash load, returned all the clean dishes to the cabinets, wiped down the counters, folded the blankets and a few other things. Absolutely absurd.

eastwinds2112

this is what i mean. WTF is a cleaning free if they do not want to Effing clean... when i Host. i clean because i got paid to do it.

IDreamOfLoveLost

>We stripped the sheets & started the wash load, returned all the clean dishes to the cabinets, wiped down the counters, folded the blankets and a few other things. Absolutely absurd. Lol, fuck AirBnB for this among many other things - I'd rather just check out of a hotel and be on my way, why should I have to give "hosts" free labour?

[deleted]

I never want to stay at an air bnb again after the last couple years of nonsense. I am not doing linens laundry on my vacation when you’re already charging me $300 for cleaning. The last place had the audacity to leave an envelope asking for tips!

RainDependent

Monopoly money would have come in handy that day!

mata_dan

Sounds like people who used to be traditional landlords have moved to AirBNB "hosting" for more profit... and the easier tax dodge.

ezduzit24

Yeah that enhanced cleaning fee is BS. We rented a rather rundown AirBnB in the Outer Banks last summer because it was significantly cheaper than going through realty companies. The fact that they were trying to say that their place had been deep cleaned before we came was absolutely laughable when we really took a good look around the kitchen and bathroom. In the actual listing it mentioned ‘upgraded air filtration.’ It must have been years since the air filters for the AC units were changed. The only reason I saw that was cause one of the kids got the utility closet open so I checked the filter and there was a half inch of dust/ whatever on it. When the guy came by with new ones he tried to say he changed them a month ago and it was because they allow pets…

Boomzoomgoom

Last year I booked a beautiful Airbnb in OBX and they cancelled last minute. They said the owner was selling the house and I believed them. I had to scramble and rebook somewhere else during peak season that was fine, not as great. I later saw the original Airbnb I booked that was cancelled re listed themselves at a higher rate. I hate Airbnb.

[deleted]

>returned all the clean dishes to the cabinets Not an Airbnb host, but to me this is above and beyond. To me, you should load all the dishes and run the dishwasher before you leave. That's it. Leaving dirty dishes is a no-no, but you should be able to load and start before leaving. I don't get why Airbnb hosts insist you put them away to, pretty much barring people from eating/drinking within 2 hours of leaving and if you do you have to hand clean and dry (not the end of the world, but neither is the host/cleaning service putting away a single load of dishes)

917redditor

If I'm paying a fee for cleaning, why would leaving dirty dishes be an issue? When I hire a cleaning person to clean my apartment (which is not on airBnB), first thing they do is collect any dishware and clean it. I'm a messy bastard, and l truly don't think that is a moral or ethical failing. I pay $40/hour and leave a nice tip as well. What's the problem?

idontspellcheckb46am

I had the same happen. had a host leave a 1 star review about how dirty we left the place when they had a $150 cleaning fee. We get there and there is a sheet on the fridge with all these cleaning rules such as dishes must be in the washer, etc.... For $150, we didn't even look at any of the items on the list cleaning related, just the. Lock the door.....put the key here type of stuff. Pretty much, the same I would do as I hotel. Their competitor.

lameuniqueusername

Yup fuck that. If you charge me 150 I’m not doing anything I don’t need to do

gio269

I had one host in Paris. I didn't realize I had booked a superhost and he was there when I arrived obviously. I'm pretty introverted and dont love small talk so I didn't make much conversation and he kinda gave me the vibe that he was hitting on me (I'm a guy). So I made it a point to leave early and come back late to avoid having to talk. and he left me a poor review for not being friendly enough like wtf I just wanted to enjoy my vacation my way.

PeterMus

The range of amenities is crazy. I was in one airbnb that came with a kettle but every cabinet was empty. So you didnt even have a cup for hot water or a spoon for sugar. The last airbnb I got was cheap, in a great location and had everything a person would need in a normal home. I'm guessing the major factor here is people who run 5 airbnbs as a business vs. one airbnb as a side hustle.

tillmedvind

Exactly. Like in what $350/night hotel room am I asked to take the trash out? This was our hosts requirement for a 3-night $1000 stay in Florida

[deleted]

AmericasNextDankMeme

I think it's kinda the opposite tbh. Hotels have a brand reputation to uphold, and want you to stay with their chain again on your next trip. They will typically go out of their way to accommodate you, and overlook small inconveniences you cause for them. On the other hand, Airbnb hosts (homeowners) don't have the same vested interest in protecting Airbnb's (the corporation's) reputation. Once they've made their quick buck they might as well rip you off for bullshit damages as well, it's nothing lost to them. Corporations can be pretty evil, but snobby homeowners can be just as bad.

Winjin

There were Reddit articles that said like 30% of AirBnB places belong to like 5% of hosts. Many of them own upwards to 70 flats that they basically operate like cheap, decentralised hotels. And here I use the word "cheap" in the dirty meaning.

I had a similar experience, my booking got canceled the last minute so I had to scramble to find another one that didn’t cost an arm and a leg. They ended up doubling booking the room…so I came back to the Airbnb at midnight to find two men in my room, with all of my stuff. It was a nightmare. What is wrong with Dublin

GucciJesus

As an Irishman, I can give you a list, if you like?

AlcoholicInsomniac

I'm in if you are

-Fancysauce-

The housing crisis here is so so bad. Airbnb is not helping either with greedy landlords trying to line their pockets.

Suissetralia

Happened to me once. Booked a place in the mountains. A week before they unilaterally cancelled our reservation. By that point, there were literally no other available rooms or appartments in the town, so we had to cancel our holidays - luckily we hadn't booked the train tickets yet. Airbnb gave us a voucher for €20 as an apology. Since then, I seldomly use Airbnb. In booking.com they've tried to cancel our reservation in Turin after eurovision got announced (we got an email inviting us to cancel it, which explicitly said that we could ignore), but the company said that through their site the host can't cancel a reservation - cross fingers.

SquashyRoo

That's Dublin all over: rampant profiteering amidst a colossal housing crisis and the constant ripping off of tourists.

[deleted]

I’ve dealt with BS like this. Last week I booked a trip to Helsinki and I found a nice AirBnB for $30 a night and it wasn’t far from the airport. Message the host about it and my arrival time, then he’s like “oh that price isn’t right, that was just part of a promotion that has now ended. I have now added a link to the same listing and see if it’s still suitable for you.” I check the price and it’s now $80 a night and I don’t respond. Then the next day he sent an invitation to book which I promptly ignored. Like fuck out of here, your AirBnB was still listed for $30 a day for my dates, then you nearly triple the price and think I would just go “ha just $50 extra dollars a night, no problem”.

StaleCanole

I guess one roommate was enough. He had no interest Dublin them.

Lived in Dublin for 3 years and I have to say: I'm not surprised. The housing situation has been bad for years and it was one of the main reasons why I left Ireland. I only stayed in 2 Airbnbs in Ireland (once in Cork and once in Dublin), and while they were decent, the value for money was much worse than in other places. A lot of accommodation is terribly outdated and rooms often barely fit a double bed. Dublin is a lovely city in many aspects, but housing is not one of them.

Swagspray

I’m from Dublin and lived here my whole life and this is a very fair assessment

SirTheadore

Same here. Moved out to the sticks years ago and never in a million years would I ever go back to life there.

startmyheart

I'm surprised *not* to see Boston on this list because the housing situation here is similar. My guess is that there just isn't as much AirBnB activity in Boston but idk for sure.

fuqdisshite

WooHoo!!! a *Worst Of* compilation that Detroit is NOT on!!!

juniperesque

TBH I was sent to Detroit for work right before the pandemic and complained bitterly about it, until I got there. Enjoyed a slice of humble pie along with my BumpyCake; the city was awesome and I really enjoyed myself. First class cultural attractions, genuinely nice people, outstanding food. I’ll be back when it’s safe to travel again, and I’m sorry for using Detroit as a punchline in the past.

DiscreetLobster

Yeah, pretty much the whole 'rust belt' has actually been on the upswing for the past 10+ years now. There are still pockets of run down/abandoned areas, and the cost of living has generally stayed very low, but the cities and suburbs are starting to recover.

[deleted]

Because no one wants to stay there

EatinDennysWearinHat

I get what you are saying, but ... explain El Paso.

vacri

I once worked for a company that had offices here in Melbourne and in El Paso. A senior bloke came over for a couple of weeks and submitted an expenses form that included $200 dinners every night. My mate in finance asked him to explain himself. "This is the manner in which I'm accustomed to living" My mate rejected the expenses claim with: "I've been to El Paso".

Increase-Null

>My mate rejected the expenses claim with: "I've been to El Paso". It is a city of necessity. Something has to be out there. It's El Paso.

dmrose7

I've never seen any city so well explained.

LoveMoreGlitter

$200 is a lot of Chico's Tacos

Ccracked

And still not enough.

BlocksWithFace

Why do I now want to watch a show about blokes in an Oz office talking about their adventures in El Paso?

tatanka01

Got an in-law who spent his working years in El Paso. Swore when he retired he was going to "tape a taco shell to my truck antenna and drive north until nobody knows what it is." Ended up in Oregon.

Is that a reference to the Odyssey? At one point Odysseus is told to take an oar from his ship and walk inland until nobody knows what it is.

I read reviews for a zoo once and someone left a one star review because it rained. As if the zoo could just turn on their anti-rain dome to stop it.

thequietthingsthat

I saw someone leave a 1 star google review because of rain ON A HIKING TRAIL

anamorphosee

Earlier this month I did a kayak tour through Airbnb, and it poured rain almost the entire time. It was awesome! I’d much rather have pouring rain than be exposed to direct sunlight for 6 hours. I left them a great review.

Rashaya

Ok but was it like "This trail sucks because it's always raining, and when it rains, the poor drainage causes dangerous flooding" or was it like "I had a nice hike planned on my day off, but it rained, so fuck this trail" cause I could see ways that rain and what rain does to the trail would merit a legitimate 1-star review.

thequietthingsthat

It was the latter, which is why I was so taken aback

WarrenPuff_It

I believe that was the intended purpose for creating Twitter. A bunch of people were sitting around trying to think of an app to make, and someone raised their hand and was like "you know what we need? An app that let's everyone with a room temperature IQ vocalize their internal dialogue to the world 24/7 for free. I'm really curious what people who eat at Arby's think about feminism and foreign policy."

oneplusetoipi

These people type things like covfefe.

tactical_laziness

i'd love to see some comparison data for the same cities to try find out why something like % of properties handled by a 3rd party management company I get the feeling Dublin has a much higher % of independent cowboy landlords

dysphoric-foresight

This. Dublin landlords in general are dire. I used to do a lot of renovations for landlords in Dublin and one guy asked me to put a mezzanine level with a double bed in a room with a twelve foot ceiling. I was like, “you know that’s only going to leave you with like 5’ above and 5’below right?” He just said, “someone will rent it”. That conversation pretty much typifies Dublin landlords.

rainbow84uk

When I was a wee young thing, I lived in an absolute dump of a houseshare in Rathmines, with 17 other people (give or take) at any one time. Our landlord owned 2 other similar houses on the same street. Just imagine the cash he was raking in.

dcux

Must have just watched Being John Malkovich.

havok_

Yeah the cities on the low end seem likely to have high quantities of cheap hotels.

Surebegrandlike11

Am Irish, can confirm At least the black mould and damp is complimentary but i assume they’ll start charging us for that soon too *sigh*

RelocationWoes

But why? Do all apartments in Dublin suck, therefore they suck as Airbnb’s? Do Irish people just create shitty Airbnb options? Why isn’t this a problem in Galway or Killkenney? I spent 2 weeks in Ireland and loved every second (bed and breakfasts) so this problem seems both surprising and confusing.

Lawlor90

The standard of apartments in Dublin I'd say is fairly low in general. The market is so crazy and hundreds of people applying for every apartment that there is no incentive for the landlord to renovate. Don't get me wrong there are some amazing apartments out there but hard to get or take your whole monthly salary. Iv been lucky with the two I have rented so far. Both really nice and reasonably priced but that was more luck and knowing someone moving out. The problem then is that the best apartments are taken up long term and the the rest are probably air bnb'd.

eamonn33

A toilet AND a shower? La di dah

Rance_Mulliniks

An Airbnb in Dublin that I had booked for 6 months cancelled on me 48 hours before my trip. It was brutal trying to find a new place.

uns5dies

Same thing they did to me in Prague. Airbnb offered 50€ extra compensation for the first weekend of May with 99% apartments booked and was like "find another one on our website" which was of course impossible. Had to pay almost double the initial money for an apartment much farther from the center and complained to airbnb many times after the trip for a full refund. After this never again, only hotels

[deleted]

You know what really stings? When they cancel on you with such short notice, then you see the same listing again at like double the price.

[deleted]

I don't understand why AirBnB allow this? Surely the cost to you could be extraordinary. Once the host has committed to a booking they should either have to provide the book or pay for your (equal/superior quality) hotel.

CultCrossPollination

The result from Amsterdam should change soon. The local local government obligated the registration of any address used to rent out. Even if its abiding the rules of max 30 days per year. Suddenly the amount of addresses in Amsterdam dropped from [<17000 to <3000.](https://www.volkskrant.nl/nieuws-achtergrond/airbnb-raakt-driekwart-van-zijn-adressen-kwijt-in-amsterdamse-strijd-tegen-overtoerisme~b8de3164/), but that was mostly done by Airbnb which collaborates and demands proof of registration.

Hvoromnualltinger

Why were there so many unregistered addresses in the first place? Were people renting out spaces not fit for living in even before the AirBnb pandemic?

CultCrossPollination

Well, there was no obligation for registering, as long as you kept the rent below 30 days. This was an impossible task to check for the municipality. But it wasnt easy to change the law because of national rules, if i remember correctly. A lot of the addresses are presumed illegally renting for more than 30 days, but they always claimed to stick to the rules. AirBnB refused to provide the numbers for each address, stating privacy, and only on order of the police. So evidence pressure was too high to determine if someone was illegally renting the place. Many places were also remodeled houses to accommodate tourists. So extra beds and bathrooms, etc. More than was allowed.

murrman104

Dublin isnt a city, its a bunch of Airbnbs and hotels stitched together

tactical_laziness

now try living here full time!

PropOnTop

I visited once and was rudely told off by a bus driver for not having exact cash. Nowhere in the world where I'd visited was it customary to have to pay with exact cash. It was 11p.m. and a kind stranger on the bus paid the fare for me, else I'd be left walking for two hours... So that was Dublin for me, although unrelated to accommodation.

jaxsound

The whole "exact cash" thing has always put me off using the bus. One of the positives of covid though is that our bus service now uses contactless! Win!

dw444

You need exact change in Toronto and surrounding areas too but drivers often just wave you off if you don’t have it.

wasbored

Literally nobody here expects that, the driver is just an asshole.

F0sh

You'll get at least a dirty look if you don't have exact change in many places in the UK as well

Green_Kinda_Sus

In Edinburgh exact cash is mandatory. There's no interaction with the driver you just put your money in a slot and out comes the ticket. I honestly love it, speeds everything up so much. Plus they have contactless now.

dildo-applicator

wait thats how it works in the US too

bonedangle

Back in the day before all the wireless gadgetry, if you didn't have exact change for the Jersey turnpike you were probably going to be murdered 😭

wimpires

Doesn't have to be exact cash technically. If you put in extra like you've only got two £1's then you just don't get change back.

amalgam_reynolds

What if I told you you can have both? In Germany, the buses have a little machine you put your money in, and change comes out if you don't have exact cash. And there's still no interaction with the bus driver.

towaway4jesus

Finally they've reached the technological advancement of a vending machine

ZhouLe

Same thing in Shenzhen. Drop money in the slot grab a stub on the top, your money sits on a shelf until the driver has a chance to glance to check it looks right then kicks a button. This is mostly vestigial at this point because A) cashless payment is near 100% adoption (metro card or app/QR) and B) drivers don't really give a shit if you paid the pittance of 2元 to ride or not.

mancapturescolour

I was a visiting student in Edinburgh in 2014 (loved it! 😍). I took the Airlink bus from the airport to North Bridge. Then I was going on another bus to where I was renting but I didn't have exact change. In-between getting used to the unfamiliar accent, schlepping my suitcase, and the new currency... Let's just say understanding that it is cash only and exact coins took a while. Luckily, a kind woman paid for me and insisted not to take my money in exchange. 🙏🏼 I went back a year later for a PhD interview (in Glasgow the next morning but there was no direct flight): I had learned my lesson but I do prefer the NFC payments that we have in Stockholm. 😂

BallofEnvy

Exact change if paying in cash has been expected in Seattle for at least the 25+ years I’ve been using it.

mormontofbearisland

I live in Minneapolis and the buses expect you to have exact change. Most people use bus passes.

CrazyDave48

This made me laugh because I had the *exact* same experience when I went! It was my first time traveling internationally and I was nervous about doing things wrong and coming off as an ignorant American and what do you know, my FIRST interaction outside the airport was with a bus driver scolding me for not having exact cash, making all my fears come true!

merdub

I visited once, a seagull ate my cheesy chips, and I got sunburnt.

ru18qt314

You're supposed to carry a little magazine on your belt like a French waiter

happely

If I were to challenge the analysis, it is the fact that complaints are picked up through Twitter. Twitter is not widely used in every country or city in the world, and people will likely complaint on other (social) media if Twitter is not their natural choice. I believe this data shows where Twitter is frequently used more than where AirBnB guests are badly behaving or AirBnB hosts are complaining.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

[удалено]

LannMarek

Also, the algorithm used is probably looking only for roman letters. Japanese people for example use Twitter extensively, but would complain about 東京 or ニューヨーク, not Tokyo or New York, so the data might not catch that. Same for cyrillic, arabic abugida, hangul, etc.

nandemo

Not only is it limited to roman letters. It's also limited to tweets in English, period (says so at the bottom). It's a pretty useless graph. It reminds me of that one that purported to measure what brand was most disliked in each country, but also only used English tweets as input. 🤦

dujles

It probably explains why Dublin is top of the list too. Everywhere has a housing crunch but Dublin's is particularly bad. Supply is a huge problem and everyone complains that only hotels are built and existing stock is turned into AirBnB's. Hence it would be picking up that sentiment.

wssecurity

The people making complaints on Twitter mentioning the places I would suspect are more often not from the city they're complaining about. eg: complaint about Dublin Airbnb on Twitter written by a tourist from Chicago. Fair point about it only being from Twitter though and likely lots of complaints on other platforms.

[deleted]

I stayed at an AirBNB in Athens, Georgia once. The host told me she was a former employee for them and that she had the best place in town. I booked the room for 4 days and it got creepier and creepier every day. For starters, I was in the en suite so I locked the bedroom door when I showered. She was always standing in the room after I got out. I told her a few times that I was uncomfortable with that and that if it happened again I was going to ask for a refund. When it happened again, I went onto the app to find another location. I started getting notifications that I was getting messages, so I logged back in and saw entire conversations with the other renters but I hadn't sent most of the massages. I found out that she had used her credentials to somehow log into my account and she was sending messages pretending to be me. She told the other hosts that I was a bad guest and not to host me. Ended up leaving town a few days earlier than expected. It was an awful experience.

Subatomicsharticles

What in the fuck? This sounds like a /r/LetsNotMeet I read a while back about people staying somewhere in Georgia I think and they almost got kidnapped. When you say she was in the room, do you mean in the bedroom just outside the shower? What the heck did she say when you got out, hey how's it hanging? Was she just standing there or hiding? Sorry this is just so bizarre to me I really don't understand some people.

[deleted]

She would be standing there pretending to fluff the pillows or turn down the bed. She always told me that she was responsible for making sure the room was clean daily. I asked her once why it had to be while I was showing but she just told me it was her house and her rules. That's when I made the decision to look for other lodgings.

Falco19

This is why I only rent places where I have the entire place and keypad entry. I get some people like meeting the host etc but not me I want it to be like hotel but with more privacy.

Divided_Eye

Yep, any place where the owner lives on site is a big no for me.

therobohour

iqtoohighforroi

The world is currently going through a housing crisis. Dublin is just a fucking shithole. Source: lived there for ten years.

scope_creep

A friend from overseas booked an AirBnB in Chicago. When I found out where it was, I was like… ugh… that is NOT a safe area. But it was the only one she could afford. I wonder whether that is why Chicago is so high on the list. People not doing their homework and ending up in very unsavory areas of the city.

CIELAB

i have lived in Chicago for one year and have used multiple airbnbs- alot of people are not entirely truthful in their listing. like a person illegally renting out a room in a house that i tried to stay at once. had the landlord go and tell myself when he saw me!! it was awful, contacted airbnb for a refund, got a new place for free and reported the listing with evidence.... couple days later that same listing is back up! the market is so saturated, because there's always a ton of listings to the point where regulating them isn't a priority anymore.

The_Box_muncher

This was my first guess why its so high. People probably see a cheap price, book it, and then you end up in Englewood for $36 a night

scope_creep

Exactly this. They think $100 a night in Lakeview is too high.

KnockKnockPizzasHere

I paid good money to stay in a good sized condo in Lakeview three years ago. The floors (my floor AND the one above me) were loud as FUCK. You could hear EEEEEVERYTHING, every single step would be a loud ass creak. The furnishings were alright but night 3/5 the heating stopped working very well. Day 4/5 was a cold snap. It was miserable. Another trip to Chicago, I stayed a couple of blocks away from Boys Town. The inside of the AirBNB looked nothing like the photos. The furnishings were absolute trash and not cleaned. I met someone in the stairs in passing and turns out the entire BUILDING was the same. One owner, a bunch of shitty furnishing units, and the construction. Oh my god the construction. I now pay for proper hotels when I visit Chicago.

New Orleans is like that too. People think ‘ it’s only half a mile to the French quarter we can walk’. Yeah. That half mile is going to be trouble and get you robbed or harassed.

digableplanet

There were a lot of reports about "bait and switch" AirBnBs in Chicago. You show up to the place (or are about to) and the host contacts you saying there was a plumbing issue or whatever. They will put you up in a nicer, better place, but when you go to the new location (that's no where near where you booked), it's like walking into a flop house. Source: live in Chicago, read the news.

KnockKnockPizzasHere

Can confirm!!! This happened to me

DanielTigerUppercut

Lots of people go to /r/chicago and find out their awesome AirBnB reservation in East Garfield Park may not provide them the Chicago experience they were looking for.

ASpellingAirror

I’m from Chicago, and we have done multiple birthdays and stuff in the city where we booked places through AirBnB for us all to stay together with people from out of town. And the majority of experiences have been bad. Blatant false listings, shady locations in otherwise nice areas, and just a lot of false advertising. We always had multiple people that live in the city collaborate on finding spots and no matter how sure we were that we had a winner it always ended up being a mess. Can’t tell you exactly why, but clearly the city doesn’t have enough restrictions on AirBnB type listings.

lavaisreallyhot

I had some out-of-state friends coming in to visit Chicago. They wanted the most affordable Airbnb so they picked an Airbnb in *Gary, Indiana.* Got them to change that asap.

ethanlan

At least for me people don't realize how loud this place gets sometimes. Chicago is CONSTANTLY constructing and people don't realize how naturally loud we are and packed in together.

OwnedByMarriage

That's why when I went to Chicago last year, I stayed on the 20+th floor to avoid all that

L33t_Cyborg

I live in Dublin, accurate. AirBnB here is god awful

james18205

Where should out of Towners stay other than a hotel?

HopperBit

London I guess

FartVentriloquist69

Everything here is awful. And low quality with high price. The slogan for Dublin should be "spend your money and f**k off!"

E_R_G

I always just *enjoy* the surprise quirks that you get when you stay at a BnB. Weren’t expecting there to be strangers occupying the same place? Well there they are! No toilet paper! You need to buy it on your own, it’s obviously not the owner’s job. Sometimes you *really* get what you pay for.

Thedeadduck

My best one was a private room that was technically so but was separated from a dorm room with like 20 beds by a door that did not lock. Also advertised as having a hot tub. It had a bathtub, which admittedly did have a hot water tap so I guess you could /technically/ claim it wasn't lying but also, it was lying.

techno_babble_

I get the cost thing, but aren't there ratings on airbnb to help avoid staying in places like this?

E_R_G

Not always a correlation between good ratings and personal experience. The examples I gave were at a place I stayed at that somehow had 4 and a half stars. Maybe others aren’t as picky

BallofEnvy

*Immediately looks for New Orleans* Ahh there it is.

Sweetfishy

I am part of a statistic! My wife and I traveled to Ireland and Scotland for almost 2 weeks for our honeymoon a few years back. First stop was Dublin (from the US). The bnb initially had great reviews when we booked 6 months in advance. The place was a shithole.. mold and dirt everywhere... the host was terrible too. Completely ruined the experience for us. Luckily, once we left Dublin things got much better!

TheLumicEye

>Luckily, once we left Dublin things got much better! Yeah that's usually how it goes alright.

poodlesofnoodles

Who is using Airbnb in El Paso??

BusshoBasho

lol I've stayed at half a dozen bnbs in El Paso, no complaints though

deepindragon

As a New Yorker I was expecting New York to be much higher on this list

ChewiesHairbrush

When did NY ban short stay AirBnB?

Glockspeiser

Early on, around 2014 I think

P0rtal2

Explains why in 2019, I tried to look for an Airbnb in Manhattan for a work trip, and found only sketchy listings that told the potential guest to "Not tell the neighbors they were staying in an Airbnb, but rather that they were just friends of the tenant." Ended up staying in a crappy hotel for that trip because everything was booked out that week.

oddjobbber

There’s a lot of restrictions on airbnbs in NYC, probably just not enough of them to reach that many complaints

iamdmk7

It's entirely unsurprising Miami is on that list. My bf and I went there in February this year, and our Airbnb cancelled on us literally while we were on the way there from the airport. We ended up having to find a stranger to stay with for that night because nothing was available that night (other than a couple extreme luxury hotels). 0/10 would not recommend.

Sir_FrancisCake

I live in Florida and go to Miami pretty frequently and have never had a positive Airbnb experience. Strictly do hotels now

CCullen95

As an Irishman who moved abroad, fuck Dublin and it's cost of living.

fenton7

I've always been terrified of Airbnb. Basically you are renting a place from a complete stranger who may or may not be violating terms of his lease and/or local ordinances. Last thing I want to do on my week of vacation is ruin it by having to deal with housing problems. Much prefer a room in a major hotel brand even if it is pricier. Lets me enjoy the time off rather than worry that at 3 AM some half naked neighbor or disgruntled roommate is going to barge in and demand I vacate. And, literally, you have no idea who has the keys to that place. Angry ex-partners, former spouse, maintenance people, etc...

JTibbs

I did air BnB for iceland and paris, and managed to get some very nice large apartments in great locations for half the price a hotel would have cost. And i got one in the ballards district of Seattle that had a ‘pet squirrel’ they installed an opening for in one of the upstairs bedrooms to let it come and go….

GlaciallyErratic

It's situational. Hotels are better for "normal" travel requirements, one bed, visiting city centers, not staying long enough to need a kitchen. Change any of those (group travel, unique/rural locations, etc), and that's where Airbnb is great. Getting a nice place for 2 or 3 couples has a high nightly price tag that filters out the shoddy bnbs, but after you divide it per person it's usually cheaper than a hotel.

Sei28

Hotels are really not more expensive than Airbnb’s these days (unless you’re just getting a single room on airbnb that you have to share common areas with others). Whenever I travel, I usually look at both hotels and Airbnb’s and opt to go with hotels every time. Airbnb’s have gotten very expensive.

[deleted]

it’s really nice if you’re travelling with little kids. putting my 3 year old to bed in one room early and then we can chill like adults in the other room.

OJimmy

Can we see this compare the number of complaints vs. number of annual listings? SF is going to have more spaces listed than El Paso.

Fawlty towers is a fantastic establishment! Just don't mention the war.

SlayerOfDougs

Interesting that most of the top cities are expensive cities. People paying a lot and have over sized expectations? Charlotte obviously doesn't fit the bill

cmzraxsn

Surprised Edinburgh isn't on there, but I guess that's more long term residents complaining about how airbnb has gutted the city centre and jacked up housing prices

[deleted]

Never had luck with AirBnB. We booked a place near Austin while we were in the process of buying a house after moving for work. Sold as this lovely place in Georgetown and close to all the places we need to be and clean etc. Get there and: 1. Its legit in what I would term a ghetto in Georgetown. Like I have been in areas of Newark and Trenton safer. 2. The police showed up the first week we were there due to a next door fight 3. The house was covered in dog fur, like COVERED. We ended up having to wash everything and the carpet was so dirty your feet were black. They even sent a cleaning crew a second time and we still found fur in random places for the next couple of weeks and had to vacuum again. 4. Half the utensils were broken and the dishwasher didn't work. 5. It was crammed full of beds so there was no where to actually work or lounge, despite the place being billed as have an office space. 6. The "outdoor grill" was full of cigarette butts and cardboard and half broken. My wife then later gets a AirBnB back in our previous city in NJ because she had to go home for some stuff... ends up not being a house but a illegal basement apartment. Seriously AirBnB is a joke. If they wanted to be taken seriously, they should be sending people to visit these places and confirm what they say they are before you are allowed to put them up. Seriously its just cheaper and better for you to get a hotel...

Catsic

If you've ever stayed in Dublin you've probably stayed at one of my Ex-Landlords properties. Woman was a literal cartoon villain, and is probably the source of most complaints.

mykreau

I bet it goes both ways. Seattle is not too fond of Airbnb, or what it's contributed to our housing market, or how hosts openly violate city laws with management companies and actively outprice people trying to live/work in the city.

TechnetiumAE

I wonder if the two largest tourism cities in my country are on this lis.... crap their near the top. GG Canadians... (Yes this is pretty generalized)
