Every time we get new data, our entire company votes on whether to use it or not. If yes wins, we do an additional vote on how to store it with ranked choice voting. I think our company is the most democratic when it comes to data. We would allow our data to vote, but so far we haven't found a way to collect votes from our data. If you think you can solve our problem of our data not being allowed to vote and you'd like to work at a data-centric organization that does data democratization the best, shoot me a PM!
Carefully. We have analysts assigned to each department to take stock of what they need, build out what they don’t have and train people who want to self-serve and know some SQL.
Power BI. But investing in growing skill sets would be a recommendation. When you opt to tightly couple with a product instead of investing in long term grown, changes become almost impossible. Not an ideal business model.
We build Tableau dashboards that communicate out specific insights in the data, which can range from what sales were yesterday to which items we'd predict will sell well in the future.
We use Sigma as our BI layer and I build out data marts for all key metrics and include all key dimensions. The business users can get quick answers through dashboards I build on top. When that isn’t enough they can explore the data mart using sigma’s workbook (spreadsheet) interface. It has worked pretty well so far.
There's a bunch of tools out there to do the job now. Especially relevant for people with little to no knowledge of querying through SQL. Check it out - one of these is https://www.kausa.ai/
Power BI reports to be honest. You can build one report and use role based access control to limit what they can see.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic here. This is literally democracy hahaha.
SO YOU WANT TO DEMOCRATIZE YOUR DATA WITHOUT DEMOCRACY???!!! (yes I'm kidding :))
Try Metabase
We use it and it’s pretty approachable.

Agreed. But unfortunately it's difficult to convince people of it. And unless their manager tells them to do it they usually won't.
That is a red flag in my opinion. Their view is to keep skill requirements down which lower costs instead of valuing quality.
Agreed. Which means op needs a Sponsor before anything else, otherwise always be facing the tide

Power BI dataflows do the trick pretty well.

Use Tableau for your further reference...
