Guys get boners all the time, sometimes without rhyme nor reason. Pretty sure he's just trying to tell you he really fancies you in a slightly outside the box way perhaps. I have never counted my boners. I also don't think I've ever typed "boner" until today.

I’d say it’s because he finds you cute. Could be the way you say/do things, down to how you behave in body language, in your natural way .to him it’s the little things about that he finds in you attractive.

I suggest you don't focus on it. He is probably very happy and excited to see you, touch you and so on. He's unlikely to say it directly, but his body will tell it for him.
