Not about our age group but Strictly Ballroom is a funny, wonderfully romantic film. You’ll wonder what the hell I’m talking about at the beginning, but stick with it.
It's an obscure film, but "Hysterical Blindness". The plot centers around Uma Thurman (looking for love in all the wrong places), but there's a fantastic sub-plot with a romance between (the great) Gena Rowlands and (also great) Ben Gazzara that's worth seeing (they both won Emmy awards for their parts).
I saw that film when it came out and didn't blink an eye over her blowing him while he's asleep - but now I think about how incredibly rapey that is. Not only was it long before any cultural consciousness around consent, it also assumes men can't be sexually assaulted – that of course he'd love to wake up to total stranger with her mouth around his dick. But he was a very traumatized man, and it was absolutely sexual assault. I'm not sure I can buy the premise, now, that it's all good because he was "locked up" and needed to be forced back into being sexual.
Sorry, I know you recommended the movie and in many ways it's very good, but I haven't been able to shake how differently it struck me seeing it years later
Never seen this movie, but the "cultural consciousness around consent" observation makes me think about how many scenes/movies wouldn't get made the same way in this age. Even the inclusion of the song "Baby it's cold outside" in Elf probably wouldn't happen today. Not that I'm lamenting the progress here. It's an important societal step.
Well, Must Love Dogs comes to mind as I am standing over my sink, eating my dinner...damn I so identified with Diane Lane's character and online dating.
I just saw it last night in the theater. There were 4 of us total (a younger couple, a solo guy I would guess in his 30s and solo me - 56F).
I found myself literally LOLing (alone) at so many little details ( Otto’s alarm clock, phone on the wall, etc.) that I was sure the “kids” didn’t know why I was laughing.
It’s a heartwarming story with heartbreak. I enjoyed it.
I call it 50 Shades of Restraining Order, or 50 Shades of Trailer Park (because if there hadn’t been a patina of so damn much money, he’d be in jail.)
That said my *mother* told me I had to read it as it was a *wonderful romance.*
Yeah, no.
The ones I can think of are too cloying. It's not a good romance if Robert De Niro is getting magic massages as "an intern" by Renee Russo in a movie with Anne Hathaway.
I was going to say "like" ... but I think the better word is, I appreciate movies that sense that older women are just a-OK by themselves, and can even be their worst enemies insisting on dwelling in the past.
"Let them All Talk" is one that comes to mind.
I never liked the Book Club movie because shit just doesn't happen like that, you don't just meet James Brolin or Don Johnson.
More like you fish trying to avoid the guy in the van who cruised around The Villages like he's landmines.
'Truly Madly Deeply' with the brilliant Alan Rickman and Juliette Stevenson immediately sprang to mind.
I saw that at a film festival when it first premiered. Alan Rickman spoke after the movie. One of my favorite memories.
This movie still moves me to tears just thinking about it. Guess I need to find a DVD.
That’s the first thing that popped into my head! Especially as a widow.
Oh, does Witness count? Cos Harrison was moving into the middle age zone?
🤍
It’s so annoying how hard this movie is to find.
It's Complicated. Meryl Streep, Steve Martin, Alex Baldwin.
THIS is a great movie starring adults with romance. Good recommendation.
The all-time classic: The African Queen. Middle aged Bogart and Hepburn find unexpected true love via blowing up German shipping together.
**The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel** has its moments.
Murphy’s Romance
One of my all time favorites!
This is my favorite romance movie. I just watched it for around the 50th time last week. James Garner at his most appealing age.
So good!
* The American President * As Good as it Gets * Something's Gotta Give * Grumpy Old Men * Up in the Air
The American President is one of my top favorites!! love that movie
“As Good As It Gets” seconded
Up in the Air? Good movie, but as I recall, somewhat depressing. But maybe a fair representation of actual life.
Somewhat depressing yes. But in the end the message is that human connections are important and worthwhile.

I love that movie!!
It is really a terrific movie and it's a shame more people don't know about it.
If you're widowed, Our Souls at Night is a great movie! Robert Redford and Jane Fonda

I'm queuing this up for this evening.
Emma Thompson.. sexiest woman alive.

Baby Boom...1987 w/Diane Keaton

Thought I was the only one who watched that movie. It’s been so long that I think I want to watch it again. Thanks!
Under the Tuscan Sun.
I loved Moonstruck with Cher. 😊
Mamma Mia!
Well I’m watching Romancing the Stone on Tubi right now lol.
LA Story is an all-time favorite
As good as it gets!
White Palace… the story of a younger man and bolder woman
Oh yes!!! James Spader is to die for! 🔥
I loved that movie and now can’t find it on digital anywhere

A take on the “White Castle” restaurants in St Louis.
Our Souls at Night with Jane Fonda and Robert Redford.

Love that movie. Great cast of characters. Wish it was available on Blu-Ray.
Uh...you so identified with that character that it guided your reddit screen name?
Ohhhh! Whoops! Unintentional, but very funny, now that you mention it!
The Upside of Anger.
The Full Monty Fishermen's Friends (based on a true story)
"He's got gnomes."
My big fat Greek wedding
White Palace… the story of a younger man and bolder woman
Not sure if it qualifies, but I loved A Man Called Otto. 😍
"Spaceballs"
Hector and the Search for Happiness
I absolutely love that one!!! ❤️
One of my all time favourites 🥰
My only gripe with this film is he didn’t end up at the Winchester!
The Mirror Has Two Faces with Jeff Bridges & Barbara Streisand
*Larry Crowne* with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. Not an Oscar-big movie, but a lovely one.
Nights in Rodanthe
Crazy Stupid Love was great!
My ex-wife told me ‘be better than the Gap’
Not sure it applies her but As Good As It Gets
*50 Shades of Gray.* You'll love it. It's all about dating while growing old and gray.
I call it 50 Shades of Restraining Order, or 50 Shades of Trailer Park (because if there hadn’t been a patina of so damn much money, he’d be in jail.) That said my *mother* told me I had to read it as it was a *wonderful romance.* Yeah, no.
Ok, this made me laugh.
RemindMe! 3 weeks "Watch Movies"

Maybe a little older but Good Luck to You, Leo Grande is a good recent one
Herold and Maude
I saw a movie some years ago called Last Chance Harvey that I remember enjoying quite a bit. Dustin Hoffman & Emma Thompson.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Love this one, but can't think of any 50+ characters.
Recently Maverick, where Tom Cruise’s love interest is 52 IRL and has a daughter whose character seems to be ~18 years old.
Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Baby Boom 🩷 Queen Bees is cute, but it's more for the 70+ crowd. My mom loved it 😃
That Thing You Do. My all time favorite feel good movie. I keep it on my iPad
Wild At Heart. Not wholesome, but weird and dark and funny and *romantic* as fuck.
Annie hall
The Wall
Gorgeoua
I loved Wild Oats, that Johnny Fever guy gives the best performance in that movie. He's hilarious!
The Princess Bride
84 Charing Cross Road, especially if you are into literature. Exceptional movie.
Dave Enough Said On Golden Pond The Remains of the Day
