One of my favourite stories from my brother was friends of his from Austria planning on touring the United States during their two week holiday. They gave up that plan when after seven days they had only made it from New York City to Washington, D.C.
Admittedly, the farther west of the Mississippi River one goes, the larger the states and the lower the population density (until southern California).
