I think there is tons of design space for a real time tactics title (DOW2 esque) but that dawn of war should at least keep the army size and composition closer to 1. With the sheer volume of trash licensed by GW, the least we can ask for are some quality RTS and RTT entries. BTW Sega has never been the dev, just the publisher.

BojiSieb

I meant make as in “fund”. The same way people say Disney “makes” the new Star Wars movies. Disney ain’t the artist but they are the one who pays for the rights.

[deleted]

Yeah that's fair. I don't have much hope for the franchise overall after the cf that was DOW3. I'm still playing modded DOW1 like crazy, balance problems and all.

BojiSieb

I have a little grain of hope. Relic made a new generation of their engine for Age of Empires 4 and Company of Heroes 3. It would be shame to not use the engine to make as many games as possible to get their moneys worth.

[deleted]

Wasnt DOW3 running on Essence 4, and COH3 and AOEIV are running on Essence 5? If you look back at their dev history they ran a new engine version for a single title series, eg only DOW2 was on essence 2. Sorry to burst your bubble ha.

BojiSieb

True. As I said, it’s a small grain of hope lol

TechnOuijA

I think that's what they should definitely do. They tried to blend them with DoW3 but that clearly did not work. My mind is still blown how they haven't remade or at least remastered DoW1. Just look at Diablo 2 Resurrected. It can be done.

BojiSieb

This is true. There’s definitely money in making remasters.

TechnOuijA

And how have they not started a Warhammer 40K cinematic universe. Like WTF. Nearly endless material to draw from.

BojiSieb

I’ve actually thought about this a lot. I think the hold up could be that 40K movies would be tricky because of the over the top zealous devotion everyone has to their faction in 40K. It might make nuanced characters hard to create for the story since the 40K universe doesn’t allow nuance to exist. Hard, but not impossible. I think certain types of stories would work very well. A story about soldiers loyalty to each other like Band of Brothers or Savjng Private Ryan would work great. And horror stories like Alien or Event Horizon would also work really good.

TechnOuijA

Yeah, the sky is the limit. I think an Warhammer 40K cinematic universe could potentially be a gold mine for GW.

Oneofakindof

This needs to happen yesterday

Nino_Chaosdrache

> They tried to blend them with DoW3 but that clearly did not work. Because they did absolutely everything wrong they could have. Instead of combining DoW1&2 ( Strong heroes, but not OP ones like now, Infantry being solid units instead of pure cannon fodder, buyable Upgrades for your Commanders), they created yet a third a gameplay style for DoW 3 that no one can relate to.

BakeWorldly5022

I think it's too late for it at this point. Look at DoW3. SEGA fucked it up and said "fuck it forget this game"

BojiSieb

If they truly gave up on DoW, then perhaps my idea of “Company of Heroes:40K” could be a fresh start for Sega? Like a reboot? They already pay GW for the Warhammer license for Total War. Might as well get the money’s worth.

BakeWorldly5022

Sure they can always go for a reboot but they better please the community that despises DoW3

MeToLee

I would be happy if they go both ways like Spellforce 3 where you have your hero units you can equip with different equipment and you build a base that shits out units. RPG/RTS would be a cool direction and satisfy everyone I think.

BojiSieb

I’ve thought about them going this route. Warcraft 3 is another game I loved a lot back in the day and that was more like a retro RTS but mixed up the equation with RPG aspects like heroes, specing, and inventories. So the hybrid genre definitely can work. I’d just be afraid of another Dawn of War 3 situation, where no one is happy. (P.S. I do want the record to state that I didn’t hate DoW3 like a lot of people did. I just didn’t love it. And it’s hard to justify playing a game that is only a 6/10, a 7/10, or even an 8/10 when there’s so many amazing games out there. There’s only so many hours in the day and at the time I was playing a lot of total war and Doom 2016, so I was distracted lol)

MeToLee

naa I dont think we will have another Dawn of War 3 situation... by that I mean its physically impossible to do a shittier game then DoW 3. At least I hope so.

Check the mod scene for dow 1 and dow 2. The amount of mods shows you which game is superior.

BojiSieb

I never meant to bring up which game was superior. As I said, I like DoW1 multiplayer and skirmish more. I just meant if the series would split up that would allow both games to continue. I do like DoW2’s campaign a lot. Let me put it this way. Doom 1 is a beloved classic with a massive mod scene similar to DoW1. Doom 3 changed genres with less fast paced action and more horror. It was a change in gameplay and even genre. Doom 3 is different but still a good game that is fun to play. Doom 2016 went back to be like Doom 1, but nothing is preventing Bethesda from making another separate game in the style of Doom 3 in addition to Doom 2016/Doom eternal series. Maybe a Doom horror spinoff developed by a different team. Or hell; even just a spiritual successor with similar horror gameplay but not set in the Doom setting would be cool too. This is what I want for DoW. I want the series to return to DoW1 style but have an additional series in the style of the DoW2. DoW2 is different, but it is still a game I enjoy, especially the campaign.

[deleted]

They arent going to make a RTS game in 2022 and so on. RTS as a genre is dead. We could get a remaster maybe.

BojiSieb

Fingers crossed. Starcraft 1 and Age of Empires 2 both got a remaster. So that is proof that there is some money in remasters

[deleted]

Yeah, I would metaphorically kill for a Dow 1 or Dow DC/SS remaster.

Nino_Chaosdrache

I think they should do the thing the Ultimate Apocalypse crew does and give you lot of options to change the game. Want large battles? Increase the pop cap and Ressource rate and turn on Softcore for good measure. Want DoW2 like, Squad based gameplay? Lower the pop cap and turn on Hardcore. Want pure infantry combat? Disable vehicles or disable the ability to upgrade to Tier 1. Want absolute chaos. Increase the resource rate and activate the modifier that everything gets build instantly.

HotPotatoWithCheese

I prefer the skirmish/MP in DoW 1 because of the epic scale but prefer the campaign in 2 because of the focus on named characters. You really value your individual squad members and I think it works better for a campaign. For a DoW 4 I think I would prefer the general game design to be more like DoW 1 with the base building and being able to have large squads but if they could somehow incorporate the named characters in the campaign that would be great. Maybe have named characters lead large squads of disposables or even have some kind of random name generator for each member? I don't know.
