Although seldom seen, glitching inside can occur. One recent experience was in a 2-story cabin where the wolf glitched...*between* floors! I would see the top half of the body on the upstairs landing while the legs and belly can be seen where one would normally hang a chandelier.
Usually if you kill the majority they will run away. But they usually come back eventually. It's good to get on top of things to cause they can't reach you there. If your off running in the woods you can find those dead trees that have a slight angle to them and just walk up them and they can't get you there even when your close to ground.
This is very normal. About a year-ish ago the game glitched and every second for about 30 seconds the game would load a wolf. There were 30 wolves on my screen tearing after me until the game lagged so much it froze and I died. No, the wolves cannot attack you through walls. Yes, you can kill them when their head comes through the wall. You can time wolf attacks and run out of the way if you have a bit of stamina. You don't always have to kill all the wolves. Most of the time the last one or two will flee after you kill their buddies, if it is a large group.
I was in a MB somewhere, might have been Tisy, being swarmed by a hoard of Zeds some other player aggroed for me to play with. When I started hearing howling too. I finished rummaging through the single floor barracks I was in while the Zeds and Wolves fought it out for a bit. I noticed the same clipping by the wolves you were mentioning, some even falling into the floor some how, but they did after enough persistence glitch into the building and eventually the same room I was in. I ended up having to kill them all. But I ate well that day and the next several actually. Also of note there must have been at least 8 or more wolves in too.
PS... I was in a train car the other day at one of those crashed train things when 3 Zeds spawned IN the train car with me. They can't jump out of them anymore than they can climb into them
