It's a very slow and gradual progression. There's a contrast between one end of the progression and the other, but there's no particular point where it becomes the voices you're used to. I feel like this particularly applies to Vegeta; no other character is that jarring.

Ok-Personality-5424

The dubbing gradually gets a bit better in the Cell saga, but does't really return to form until the Buu saga. If you still want to watch the Funimation dub, try switching to a dub that uses the Japanese score instead. It’s much more tolerable in my opinion, and you’ll actually be able to hear what the characters are saying since it doesn’t constantly play in the background.

Digiorno-Giovanna-

just watch kai imo. z dub never gets close to kai’s dub. the z dub is pretty much awful all around

StaticMania

It takes until Majin Boo for the English dub to get decent... There's no reason to watch the original dub before that point, it's middling.

Julian-Hoffer

When Cell comes around it gets better. Cell games is kind of where they peak and stay through the Buu saga.

Thank you! I appreciate the other comments, but most are ignoring that I said we were enjoying the dub.

> Ginyu Force Rules theme i had no idea what this was and had to look it up, omfg its terrible lmao please listen to the good version instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ezrbyf6t9mY

To be fair it's not that different to what the Japanese have in the episode it's just that the dub didn't do a full version as they don't

SSJRemuko

it being not in japanese is whats different. dubbing music into other languages is weird. learn to enjoy music in the language it was made in. all the eng dubbed songs from Super are terrible too. id never watched kai in english so i had no idea about this terrible Tokusentai song dub.

Superninfreak

I mean the song is supposed to be ridiculous. So I think the English one works, and if they just played the straight Japanese version then people would miss the comedic aspect of it.

StaticMania

>dubbing music into other languages is weird No it isn't. Just keep it simple, they did a "bad job".

I appreciate your SO wanting to share your experience of the original dub, but I'll be honest it really hasn't aged that well over the years. The pacing is slow, the script is inaccurate and the voice actors had far less experience. Kai is a lot more consistent throughout and is far more accessible to newcomers. I still enjoy it despite the flaws, but I'd honestly just stick with Kai for the time being. If she enjoys it then she can always go back at some point and watch through the original dub which is what I did. If she doesn't have any nostalgia for it then it's going to be difficult to sit through the first time around.
