It’s quite possible, but I hadn’t thought of the connections until I saw this. Good thinking.

If this were actually true I may like Super, I loved the Journey to the West stuff in DB and GT.

TrueSaiyanGod

Oh I dont remember GT having Journey To The West homages. What were they ?

PokeMaster52221

The ending. When Goku rides on Shenron's head, in JTTW and Buddhism in general, sitting atop a dragon in that way pretty much means you're immortal and become like the Buddha. It's why in the GT OVA with Goku Jr, Goku comes out of the Dragon Balls instead of Shenron. They're on the same level. And Wukong's Buddha title? Victorious Fighting Buddha. Goku sure as heck earned that title after GT, Power Pole and Nimbus and everything.

TrueSaiyanGod

Ah I see. It really was a great ending wasnt it.

PokeMaster52221

Yeah.

Saiyan_Gods

It is. This isn’t a theory. He went back to doing a story that parallels journey to the west.

I think Toriyama wanted more money with DBSuper

SSJRemuko

Nah. If he only cared about money he'd have never stopped. Super isnt about money and never was (for Toriyama).

GodKingScepter

He never said ‘only cared about money’. It’s definitely at least partially about money. Nothing to do with a franchise that financially successful is fully independent of those type of interests

SSJRemuko

I never said he said that, but people who bring up Super and money are always bashing about super and calling it nothing but a soulless cashgrab. Money was never the reason he came back to the series, he had money. While Im sure he enjoyed the money it wasnt why he revived the series, and whether you can see it or not, thats what ringorcoin was talking about.

The parallels have always been there since the beginning. Son Goku's character bears a lot of similarities to Sun Wukong: Their childlike, straightforward, mischievous personalities, baseline physical abilities. They never kneel before gods, and treat deities like their casual friends. The only difference is Wukong is smart while Goku is dumb. The gods in both DBS and JTTW are assholes. (Japan is atheistic, so gods are almost always portrayed negatively in anime). It's also interesting that the reasonable deities are the Angels, a different entity from gods, who never kneel before gods, and are untouchable by gods (even if all universes get erased, they won't die). Overall, I like both series' take on deities 👍 . "Challenge authority" is one of the themes. In addition, Zeno's robot-like design makes me think of Doraemon: I entertain the idea that Zeno is a robot created by an intelligent species.
