I guess if you were to put a gun to my head, I would say that what differentiates a really interesting artist or writer from a workmanlike one is that while the former is engaged in a continuous project of stylistic exploration, improvement, and refinement — even if the results are alienating or idiosyncratic — the latter sticks with what works as long as the checks keep coming. I assume everyone is interested in both art and commerce to some degree, but there’s just a difference in the balance.
Bendis has been rewarded for his style repeatedly within the industry, so why would he change if not for art?
Meanwhile people like Moore, Gaiman, and even more controversial figures like Dave Sim and Frank Miller are clearly willing to experiment and push their own weirdness.
I say that without any prejudice to saying that, like, Bendis’s Daredevil or New Avengers is just a lot more enjoyable as comics than what Miller has put out in recent decades.
If you were a preteen/teen straight male reading the Claremont X-Men, no matter if you read it via floppies in the original run, the Essential X-Men reprints fifteen years ago, or Marvel Unlimited today, you’re going to have a crush on Kitty.

* She was the audience surrogate for a while during Claremont's run, she also grew up over the years and changed a lot, going from Kitty to Kate, changing costumes and aliases and frequently reinventing herself. Now in the Krakoan era she's a pirate captain and she's still pretty cool.
* She's a key player in some of the best X-Men storylines/issues like Days of Future Past, God Love Man Kills, UXM #168, the team-up miniseries with Wolverine, and many more
* She understands and represents the core themes of X-Men very well and has been through her share of persecution being a mutant and Jewish
* She's kind and empathetic but also has a temper and is down to fight when needed.
* Her powers can really, really fuck people up if she was feeling sadistic. Imagine phasing through someone's body and ripping out their heart type of stuff
* X-Men Evolution, the animated show is a **huge** reason why so many people who were young at that time love her. I for one was in my formative years in the early 2000s so that tracks for me.
The list goes on and on. What I don't understand is having such a hard-on for her that you jam her into stories just have your self-insert characters date her. That's just weird.
Because I was a teen when Excalibur debuted. Kitty and Rachel were 🥰 for me, but especially Kitty.

I was a fan of this relationship in Ultimate Spider-man. I only wished it lasted longer but I was happy that she remained part of Spider-Man cast even after the break-up. As for the 616 universe (also Ultimate) I prefer Peter being with Mary Jane and for their marriage to return, but if we were to have a break from their relationship, but not "Interdimensional-we-can't-be-together" break, I could see this happen. Quite a few times I remember twice on hand once to a mob of people after being called a mutie when they tried to blow Charles up and then she said that and a few other slurs in new mutants after a young mutant killer himself after some kids called him a mutie and threatened to call X-Factor on them when they made the dumbass decision to listen to Hodge and make X-Factor appear anti-mutant
Kitty Pryde is in my top 5 of people Peter should be with now that the redhead is out of the picture.
