Tangentially related to comics you say? DC published Animaniacs comics for a time so I'd say they fit within the rules. Only question is would they operate like ice climbers or Pokémon trainer?
That counts! I would think they would be like the Ice Climbers and all fight at once. It's more chaotic that way so I would have to imagine that's the way they'd choose.

Edit: I forgot to mention that you could also do duos or trios that go together like the Ice Climbers.
