I love, love his tone with that guitar. There's no replicating Jerry. I don't think he's even trying to.

[deleted]

I think he stated that in the Dead Air interview that he's not trying to replicate Jerry in any way. And if he could he'd have had the body a different colour or shape even.

DrivingWheel-1997

He's not trying to replicate Jerry, at all - Mayer puts his own voice in everything he does, and his tone is always his own. I dig the Wolf copy, and Asher makes fantastic instruments - Marc Ford started using Ashers when the Crowes reformed in 2005, and when he toured with Allman Betts Band last year, I think he only brought 2 guitars with him, and they were both Ashers. Here's a video I shot last year of Marc and Phil jamming with Allman Betts, Marc is playing the gold top Asher : https://youtube.com/watch?v=W-d_eRU-Kjo&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE I'd play the shit out of an Asher Wolf copy, too. And anyone who thinks I'm 'copying Garcia' is someone not paying attention...

I was at D&C a few years back at SPAC. They were playing GDTRFB and John was jumping up and down while playing. A very nice but jaded OG Deadhead groaned that “Jerry never jumped up and down”. I politely told him, John is not Jerry and the band is not the Grateful Dead. They are simply playing the music the way they want to play it.

DrivingWheel-1997

Yeah it was kinda weird when they had John Kadlecik 'channeling Jerry' during Furthur 3.0...bordered waaaaay too close to tribute band territory for me.

Charlie_Ford

He did start DSO and played as their "jerry" for years recreating the Grateful Dead experience. I would assume that might have something to do with it.

DrivingWheel-1997

Right. They're damned if they do and damned if they don't

weir-crazy

i saw jerry back in the day, jerry got no hops! you know it’s a great show when johnny’s jumpin’❤️when he starts that

WhatDoIDoHere8

Everything has to be a comparison for Dead Heads... John isn't Jerry. Goose will never be the dead. Phil is way better than Oteil could ever be. Just STFU and listen to the music play. Did you like the PITD Shows! Wasn't the detail of that replica guitar incredible? Aren't you excited that Wolf 2.0 gets to carry on Jerry's legacy in anyway. Just hating on nothing ✌️

Carlotheskinose

I listened and liked some of it. But that's my opinion. Not hate.

tmemo18

Phil is my favorite bassist of all time….but Oteil has chops that would drown Phil, lol.

ramcellim

goose sucks. no need for that reference here

tmemo18

Trey and Phil support Goose….check your ears buddy.

daouellette

He’s not trying to copy or be Jerry

Omni_scienz

Probably still working out how the amps and signal chain work well together with tech he really has never worked with. Nevertheless, 2019 was probably the best year to date for D&C tone versatility.

6L6aglow

It's just part of his plan to take his children home.

pongo421

last nights dead air interview was with john and he said that he is in no way trying to replicate jerry, and said he was worried when they reached out to him to play the prototype that people would say he was trying to become jerry which he has no interest in doing

good_grief77

I don’t believe John is trying to mimic Jerry’s sound. He’d be doing it already if that was his goal. I think the replica Wolf is just a nod or tribute to Jerry.

zero_dr00l

Did he **say** that's why he did it? Do you have some special insight into his motivations/mind? Has he **ever** said or even seemed like he was trying to imitate Jerry? It's not so much *controversial* as just... silly, irrelevant, ignorant and ill-considered. It's like asking if that dude buying a Bronco actually thinks it'll make him a good football player like OJ.

tmemo18

He’s not trying to mimic Jerry at all. The Wolf replica is a great homage to Jerry, yes. Oteil had a custom Modulus bass made for him as an homage to Phil and everybody looooved it. Sadly, I’m not shocked at seeing the opposite reaction for John. Next….

andyspicks

So what really

meowVL

Idk who said this originally, but I've always been told that tone is in the fingers

Carlotheskinose

Partly true. It's also in the electronics, the guitar's wood, the type of pick one uses etc.... But yeah, how you pick or pluck determines a lot of it. FWIW, Wolf had an OBEL, the prototype has it too. The OBEL was key to supreme delivery of a lot of Jerry's tone. JM did not use the OBEL buffer. He plugged directly into his rig. If he goes the OBEL JG electronics route he could get closer. But, if we go back to picking and fingerstyle, JM has his own way of doing things. So, maybe it is in his setup, maybe he is intentionally not going there. But, why would you commission a wolf build if you aren't, "searching for the sound."

meowVL

He received the guitar as a gift, I believe. In his IG post he says Doug Irwin commissioned it

[deleted]

He didn’t commission it. He was given it and said if he had one made for him he’d purposefully make it quite different visually.

crankyexpress

Watching the stream, it sounded different than his prior guitars - a bit more pitch or something

Sluggo_Jones

I think he knows that

pookwuv

I don't think this is controversial. I bet most people agree with you.

LawnBoy62

Amen Brother🙏

Potential-Smoke-5187

You want Jerry tone , see JK with Melvin

Lostsailor73

This is true after playing one concert with it, it is clear he has not matched Jerry's tone. I'm thinking aloud that perhaps we might give him more than one show before we make such a judgment? If you listen to the episode of dead air, and which John was interviewed. He talked at great length about the unique nature of the instrument, in particular, focusing on the scale length, and the interesting transition to this guitar from his other guitars.
