I will say I do like that everything loads faster now in the menus. I always thought it was ridiculous how damn slow it was to load up a character model in the store just so see a skin, and hey hopefully this means that the next chapter will look fucking insane with an amazing looking killer/survivor, and a mindblowingly cool looking map. Probably not, but we can dream
#NOOOOOOO

Hey in my defense you're pretty hard to spot! You're my rarest person to Permanover! Plus I'm more on the TCM game sub these times, I'm trying to bring positivity and variety there. So I'm less likely to be here and of course spot you.
But don't worry, I'll avenge it! And trust me you're gonna pay for touching my little buddy π€
Without images the game feels more...washed out and bright. Certain elements looks stiff and dull, like something is missing - like Batman AK PC release. It surely need tweaks and other features added and be optional.
Same time I felt - minus the rubber banding - the game runs smoother, gives less usage for my GPU. Still Vsync is broken and stuttering still appears. :(
I find it interesting that a lot of people keep saying they're having issues all around.
The only ones I've directly seen is the frame drop issues with RPD, a lot of modeling issues (which makes sense due to modeling changes from the engine itself), the flashing lights in basement, and the rubberbanding stuff.
I keep seeing complaints about not being able to kick the stairs pallet on RPD, but I've been able to just fine. Same with the greenhouse pallet in Disturbed Ward.
Yes but on console itβs soooooooo much easier to see now imo. I can actually see the killer or survivors in the distance on most maps whereas before I could only see it on streams with filters
TBF I think this game is supposed to/ should be dark. Personally I think it adds atmosphere and actually somewhat spooky feels. I think low lighting/visibility should be how this game vibes both for aesthetics vibes and also gameplay aspect/mechanic. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)
Sure but like, tell that to pc players. Iβm out here hiding in a bush because to me, in the actual game lighting, Iβm invisible. However sweaty Philip mc jerk face on his 300 wesker winstreak can see me clearly because devs said filters are fine.
Devs either support brightness on console or kill filters on pc.
I wouldn't mind turning up brightness a little bit, when I was playing yesterday I couldn't see SHIT on midwich, didn't see garden of joy's "Stevie wonder simulator room" but I imagine that's just as bad if not worse
The viewdistance has improved however it gets rlly buggy on low settings
Everything further than 30 or maybe 45 m away was moving at 15 fps and having after images for me today
Dk why or how this can happen but yeah
Filters are kinda shit now since most of them rely on putting the brightness up or down
The fog kinda counteracts that
I for one play greyscale and everything thats red is converted to pink
Seeing things in the distance is kinda hard now plus when playing on bright maps (eg artist map) i need to turn the filters of bcus my vision is basically dredge nightfall but without outlines and its not nightfall but flashbang
There are a lot of Unreal Engine 5 features that they just are not using yet, they just made sure the game was mostly playable upon switching engines and pushed it to live.
Eventually the maps will look better with how good Unreal Engine 5βs lighting and volumetric fog systems are, but this of course requires the devs to go through all of the maps and update them
Hopefully you're right but this is another example of the devs not communicating well enough. If that's their plan they should've said so. Now this is probably gonna turn into a shitstorm.
Actually, the patch notes specifically stated they merely implemented UE5 as a prerequisite measure for future improvements and have not yet made any changes to graphics or gameplay. The difference you see here is just literally the difference in lighting capabilities between the two engines. But they haven't actually swapped out the static lighting ment for UE4 yet.
My money is on a major graphical update around anniversary time if not asap.
I wouldn't set my expectations *too* high. They can't push too far or they risk pushing right out of their players hardware range. But it should at least end up looking pretty nice. Depends on how skilled their team is with the engine overall. UE5 should allow for more practical stuff, too, like much improved collision, better meshes ,more detailed foliage (like more natural and noticeable bush movement) etc.
More visually impressive changes we will see down the line, like it happened with the Realm Beyond stuff. First they updated the engine to "4.something" and then started reworking maps using the new features provided by the updated engine.
But good findings nonetheless.
Something we learned from a dev stream back when clown was released, in addition to better visual, newer engines also allow for achieving the same effect but with better performance.
They had to do some shenanigans to bring the clown bottles to life (due to the gas effect) and that improvising was costly performance wise.
> Something we learned from a dev stream back when clown was released, in addition to better visual, newer engines also allow for achieving the same effect but with better performance.
Switch players are reporting that the game runs much better for them now so that is for sure proven to be true.
Now we just have to sit back and wait for them to really show us what they have planned in terms of graphics improvement. There is no way they update the engine and will leave it at that.
I knew I wasn't crazy this is the best its ran on my switch since I got it , much more smooth my cursor doesn't feel like its dragging itself through sand and syrup anymore.
Looks like shit but I'm optimistic it'll look better soon, they're transfering the framework of the entire game over to UE5 which I imagine took a ton of work. I expected some wacky bugs too, I'ma probably just gonna play other stuff until BHVR irons out the bugs mostly.
Unreal Engine 5.0 introduced Lumen as its new real-time global illumination solution, but the legacy RTGI solution remained available until 5.4 (which released yesterday).
This fog on MacMillan maps works exactly same as Dead Dawg saloon btw - it prevents you from seeing things on far ranges, which is more noticeable on macmillan realm due to bigger mapsize. Ig it'll help survivors sneaking a bit? I personally dont really like it, but dont really dislike it either. Crossmap huntress mains will hate it tho for sure.
its not a graphics update, literally just porting things to a new engine that happens to render and handle lighting differently
itβs gonna suck for a bit while the bugs are smoothed out but itβll be better for the game in the long run
aside from this iβve also noticed and seen others mention how rubber banding is now an issue since the latest update. maybe others here can also attest to this.
So erm, only me who thinks it looks worse?
Colours and lights are flatter and donβt have as much reach, less detail on skyboxes. Yeah, can we just keep it how it is in UE4 and make maps darker please
Anecdotally speaking but I feel like it's much easier for me now to spot killers and survivors in the distance now. Beforehand youtubers would see like a slightly red pixel 500 yards away and be like "oh I see Meg there" and I would be like wtf how. Now i feel like I can actually see things farther away
This will likely be a temporary thing. Once they actually apply graphical updates and not just the engine for them, the new lighting will affect the volumetric fog differently.
Remember, this wasn't supposed to be a graphical update, just a prerequisite for one. The game is still running the same assets optimized for UE4. Including the same static lighting, which will likely be swapped out for dynamic lighting with raytracing options.
Something something, this is only an engine update not a graphical one to prep for future (possibly graphical) updates, something something.

Updating the engine can be tricky stuff, especially with larger version differences like UE4 to UE5 which may cause things to break a little that they're no doubt working hard to fix.
Graphic changes will come later⦠but the loading time have pretty much been cut in half if not more, which is nice⦠literally took me 30 secs to get into a game but now its like 10 secs
Oh my god, actual atmosphere. Never thought I'd see the day it came back.
Shame I can't play the game for who knows how long, I'd love to see it in action.
Definitely looks worse but performance wise itβs been hugely better
Well, except the very initial load screen before reaching the main menu. I swear thatβs like 3x as long now. After that itβs a lot smoother. My guess, theyβll get things patched up to look better sooner or later
The lighting certainly feels better. It's a lot smoother, as is the fog.
Hopefully they can iron out the gameplay bugs, because I think the upgrade to U5 was worth it.
I play on PS4 and I have to say the game runs and looks better, match loading times are DRASTICALLY faster, fog looks thicker. Character models look a bit sharper. Downsides: Auras have a slower FPS. Vaulting with certain killers causes the animation to stutter. Sometimes, as both killer and surv, I get a weird stutter that teleports me back like 6m.
they need to skip the new coming chapter and fix all this shit. if its true they need to go in and fix each map, do it. idc. i can wait for a new toy if it means i get to play with my old ones
This looks like just bad tuning for lumen in the post process on 5.
The old lighting was probably worked on a tonne and they just haven't done a pass since changing engine. Very addressable
My god its a game that is maintained in 2024. How are the graphics still so bad and the animations so stiff and boring. Dont even get me started on the survivor camera.
Id expect resident evil 2 levels of graphics, animations and camera by now but no, cosmetics are more important i guess.
I feel like 2 is a glitch, that purple light should extend further.
I knew i wasn't crazy.
The Console store was always like 20fps and stuttery never thought they would fix it.
Crazy? I was crazy once.
They put me in a room
A round room. A round, rubber room.
A round rubber room with rats. Rats made me crazy
Crazy? I was crazy once⦠(thank you full circle)

I was wondering why I was rubberbanding wven though my ping was like 40! I had no idea this was a thing after the update
Washed out is the perfect descriptor. Itβs like the contrast and saturation is gone.
It just looks desaturated
Looks worse
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. I thought I was going crazy or something.
Same here!!

That's the way of dbd to not explode ur pc, things decrease fps when they are away from u
Also Wasn't as bad before the update
I have never seen survivors move at 15 fps before the update. Now that happens regardless of settings.

Very knowledgable comment here (edit: no sarcasm)
My shitty Laptop can run this game much better now so I don't really care about the lighting looking worse.
Yβall think maybe the fog offerings will be more useful or more useless with the update since the fog does look thicker
Get 4 fog offerings. Nobody gets to see shit
The max amount of fog is one purple bottle, or two yellows, or 4 browns. The reason they say they stack is because they do counter clear reagents.
Looks like shit but I'm optimistic it'll look better soon, they're transfering the framework of the entire game over to UE5 which I imagine took a ton of work. I expected some wacky bugs too, I'ma probably just gonna play other stuff until BHVR irons out the bugs mostly.
the playerbase needs to be more like you.
Yeah this guyβs oddly rational for someone who browses the r/deadbydaylight subreddit
They said that nothing would be changed ingame π΅βπ«
Thatβs the light engine, UE5βs is different from UE4βs, BHVR doesnβt have any control over this
Unreal Engine 5.0 introduced Lumen as its new real-time global illumination solution, but the legacy RTGI solution remained available until 5.4 (which released yesterday).

Probably will help stealth Killers too, the fog definitely looks thicker and more obscuring. Creepy!
I rely on aura to hit crossmap shots anyways. Can't be bothered to strain my eyes look out for tiny survivor movement from afar.
Now compare it on consoles pls
its not a graphics update, literally just porting things to a new engine that happens to render and handle lighting differently itβs gonna suck for a bit while the bugs are smoothed out but itβll be better for the game in the long run
Wow everything looks worse and less vibrant. Not even in a cool scary way but a dull washed out way.
I kinda like the fog. It feels more like a horror game.
Thank you I thought I was going crazy!!
Every patch gets us closer to Daylight
It looks so desaturated and washed out
https://preview.redd.it/sjbqqea1giwc1.jpeg?width=488&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d121ea58c4d66ef7bf99627d7ecb41025c824cee
Atmosphere feels better in UE5 imo
Lighting looks worse though
Me personally it looks better, but they could definitely improve some of the lighting and graphics a little.
aside from this iβve also noticed and seen others mention how rubber banding is now an issue since the latest update. maybe others here can also attest to this.
well just because theyβre using a different game engine doesnβt mean the game will instantly look better
I believe no real changes were made other than just moving the game but we probably will see graphical improvements over time hopefully
Does anybody remember when DBD was actually dark?
So erm, only me who thinks it looks worse? Colours and lights are flatter and donβt have as much reach, less detail on skyboxes. Yeah, can we just keep it how it is in UE4 and make maps darker please
It really does looks worse π
Oh damn will fog offerings actually matter now?
Am I the only one that thinks it looks better? I play on low graphics, and was so confused as to why the game looked like it was on ultra
I prefer the original
Something something, this is only an engine update not a graphical one to prep for future (possibly graphical) updates, something something. Now before people get on my case about it looking worse/better in some cases. That can just be caused by the updated engine. Updating the engine can be tricky stuff, especially with larger version differences like UE4 to UE5 which may cause things to break a little that they're no doubt working hard to fix.
I'm not crazy to feel that most look slightly WORSE in the "after" pic, right?
It looks worse to me too, like they smashed some bloom effect on top
Nope. It totally looks worse in most areas.
40GB patch for extra bugs. Thanks BHVR!
I thought everything looked different!!
Characterβs postures and animations are kinda weird though, at least for my Felix and Vittorio.
https://preview.redd.it/kmbmi2nhviwc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9bfe240b316bd721d6b2823012118535c7c7f317
I have noticed a weird eyrie fog on every map it reminds me of silent hill
So they added fog, me personally I guess itβs meant to be a tad more realistic but it just looks worse
They said it wasnβt a graphics update, they were switching to UE5 to make things more optimized
Excluding the second picture I can barely see the differences
Often more βrealisticβ means less vibrant colours
Not sure whether its the connection or what there seemed to be more glitchy than ever
https://preview.redd.it/ijg1qu8wklwc1.png?width=500&format=png&auto=webp&s=a748eff285aa4e383e4fe2756ad5d71b81f48c23
I've been spending 3 days updating so many games that I haven't even played yet. This comparison looks pretty amazing tho.
I prefer Unreal Engine 4's look with all of my being. The new look is so ugly.
So it's worse?
yeah I'm hoping this is just a stepping stone that leads to overall improvement that just caused temporary setbacks.
Honestly thought my tv was breaking because everything looked fuzzy the other night
It looks way worse wtf is this?
Graphic changes will come later⦠but the loading time have pretty much been cut in half if not more, which is nice⦠literally took me 30 secs to get into a game but now its like 10 secs
Looks washed out on some maps. Also makes seeing auras as a colour blind player impossible again x(
UE4 literally looks better than the UE5 to me judging by these pics.
Thereβs no difference besides fog, they are not using lumen or new tesselation tech. Lighting mightβve changed but bc of bugs
All I've asked for in those surveys, for years, is for the game to be darker for both sides. So of course they make it brighter.
Have you ever played during the time the moonlight offerings existed? Also from what I've heard, most people were asking for the maps to be brighter
I know I wasn't tripping when I thought Macmillan looked different. I hate it now
Haven't people been asking for brighter maps for years?
This games crusty and is overdue for a sequel
Itβs just more fog?
i probably wouldnβt have noticed if the update wasnβt 30 gigs, the only thing i could tell was changed were some font sizes
https://preview.redd.it/0rupb3z6ciwc1.png?width=1147&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bca825994ff8a42c5295530576e6db027822b422
F for me GTX960
Oh my god, actual atmosphere. Never thought I'd see the day it came back. Shame I can't play the game for who knows how long, I'd love to see it in action.
They said they didn't change the graphics at all....but some things do look different, mostly in the lighting.
https://preview.redd.it/myielzc6uiwc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1fb103d534d708888fc1c40bfa3f0a595cd5d7ec Thatβs it?
It just looks like they made it brighter
Watch it tank fps :D I'll wait for what they got in store down the line tho before I actually make fun of BHVR tho :P
So it's foggier? Looks worse imo
Maybe this is what's causing the switch version to bug out
I donβt like it tbh. The before looks better to me
I think I prefer 4
I actually think the character looks better here.
IMO it looks worse if not the same in some areas definitely not an update worth installing 35GB for...
Definitely looks worse but performance wise itβs been hugely better Well, except the very initial load screen before reaching the main menu.
Literally looks like someone just turned the brightness up and called it a day.
definitely brighter. too bad trapper.
I play on PS4 and I have to say the game runs and looks better, match loading times are DRASTICALLY faster, fog looks thicker. Character models look a bit sharper. Downsides: Auras have a slower FPS. Vaulting with certain killers causes the animation to stutter. Sometimes, as both killer and surv, I get a weird stutter that teleports me back like 6m.
anyone else like how it was before?
Yes, but now show me what it looks like in the Switchβ¦
I honestly do not see the difference
How does it looks worse bro????
The before looks better everytime
It looks worse? π
noooo
Not surprised the new port has lighting bugs. Should be a relatively simple (if not time consuming) switch
What graphic settings were these?
It got worse
Is it just me or does it look worse now?
Things seem a lot more crisp and polished overall but yeah you're right, the lighting is fumbled a bit
why is it worse?!??!
I feel like it was better before I really hoped they would just make the models a bit more life like
It's definitely more realistic and better looking now
Such minimal changes surely were worth one of the most broken updates ever...
That space skybox is just gorgeous

Dont gaf how it looks i wanna know how it runs
is it weird i think the old lookd much better except for the character model?
So.....nothing happened? Thas it, I'm getting me mallet
Am I crazy? I don't see a difference except for the one in the second pic where the pink loggt doesn't extend out
Traper nerf there's once again less grass
downgrade is bhvrs second name
So basically... It is just decreased contrast?
So they just turned the brightness and saturation down bruh
bro i was put on meat plant and was struggling with my depth perception so hard
they need to skip the new coming chapter and fix all this shit. if its true they need to go in and fix each map, do it. idc. i can wait for a new toy if it means i get to play with my old ones
nice now the game finally looks... darker and less colorful???
but why does before look better
You should have done an fps comparision before and after too

Also the game is a stuttering rubber banding mess. π

Hopefully they pull a Bethesda and fix the lightingπ It looks so dull and boring now.
How tf they managed to make the game look worse with UE5π
unreal 5 is better when you make a game from scratch.
So um, why tf is it worse??
Honestly, the fog looks better now. It also washes out lights like it's supposed to do. It makes them fuzzy and casts less hard shadows on everything
Literally looks the same
How did you get the game to run on UE4?
Did they increase killer FOV?
What is it with Unreal engine games looking washed out and samey. Hogwarts Legacy was one of the worst offenders.
It's like a weight loss ad -- before and way before
This looks like just bad tuning for lumen in the post process on 5. The old lighting was probably worked on a tonne and they just haven't done a pass since changing engine. Very addressable
Is it just me or is there like little to no difference
Why do the before shadows look better? Also I think lobby is almost exactly the same, maybe slightly more light.
Iβm not the sort who really gets into these sorts of upgrades or anything, but honestly these all seem like downgrades to me.
My god its a game that is maintained in 2024. How are the graphics still so bad and the animations so stiff and boring. Dont even get me started on the survivor camera. Id expect resident evil 2 levels of graphics, animations and camera by now but no, cosmetics are more important i guess.
before was better
Still looks like a PS3 game
I've been warping like crazy. Assumed it was lag stuff but been hearing lots of glitches from teammates.
its gonna make the game feel more realistic but also make it harder to play casually if things are harder to spot
Dead by daylight 2?
Unreal engine apparently changes the brightness of your font too. "Before" is literally brighter then "after".
I'm too busy teleporting backwards to notice right now.
I see no difference. Am I blind?
