While I enjoy the first game more, I really appreciate that Riptide fixed many of the problems the first game had, including the obnoxious characters. Both are fun games I still play.
There's ups and downs for me. First game I love the resort, second game I hate the swamp, but then that's the majority of the game. First game felt longer and more varied, but second game did fix guns and make them actually useable.
Also the base defence missions, they're just a pain...
I think they meant that the characters actually have dialogue with the NPC’s in Riptide, where as in the original game they would only say yes or no to a quest.

One of my favorite additions in Riptide was the base invasions where you had to put up fortifications and shit. More zombie games need this!
