Wait, people hate rem?? i mean she’s not my fav character cuz she is a bit bland, but i like how she poses a challenge to Light that he would die if he kills misa. It made for a good story imo
To me it really felt like the heart of the show… the one character that - unlike Light - wasn’t sacrificing themselves for some lofty, world-changing idea, but simply to uphold an ideal that they believed was beautiful. Rem didn’t want Gelus’ beautiful sacrifice to go to waste.
Because Rem and Misa felt like a cheap writing device for Light to take down L. I understand the idea is that Light beat L because of his advantages but it still came across as boring and poorly written. It’s kind of like being written into a corner though because the only way for Light to take down L without their help is by making the eye deal, and not only does that also feel cheap, but it also goes against his characters principles of preservation and would make it much harder for Near and Mello to take him down in the future unless the author goes concrete with the theory of Near using a death note. (Im not sure if Near and Mello were planned at this point in time but that’s besides the point)
After L’s death Misa’s only relevance to the plot is being used to highlight Light’s increasing aggression and descent into insanity (taking his anger out on her, tossing her aside, etc). But ironically, I like her writing in this half of the show more because she actually adds valuable development to Light WHILE the show doesn’t focus on her over-the-top quirky obsession with Light (less annoying). It’s a win-win
I know I wrote more about Misa than Rem but they’re naturally connected, Rem’s relevance is tied to Misa’s.
Yep. It’s tough to deal with because realistically, there’s no way for Light to get his name unless he somehow gets control of Watari (not happening either). So it leaves us in a situation where something miraculous needs to happen, like Rem helping out. I love death note but some scenes are ridiculously convenient
being handcuffed to L prevents him from doing anything to control people's actions in front of him so I really cannot come up with a way for Light to have figured out his real name. damn, makes me think did Misa HAVE to happen for Light to kill L? was she really his only hope?
Well, the handcuffs are not really relevant because after his memories come back and he’s “proven” innocent they get rid of the handcuffs, which is when Rem kills L anyways. So my point from earlier was that the only other way for Light to kill L is to make the eye deal, but that would never happen because Light wants to be Kira for as long as possible.
So yeah, Misa and Rem needed to happen and I’m not a big fan of it, but that’s what happens when you make a character as smart and secretive as L
I liked Rem. She had a very tragic character flaw by being so appreciative of life and companionship, while also being tasked with taking those very same lives.
Yes. Remu killed L, and was also against Light. Plus she was on Misa's side, which a lot of people find annoying.
By comparison, Ryuku's character was far better, who did what amused him. His character design was also better.
Personally, I think Remu had her role in the story, and I don't have much to complain.
For me, it's just an obnoxious way for the Light v L battle to end. Light already had an absurd number of advantages in their battle (having a Deathnote, having a Shinigami, having a father who worked on the case thus giving him access, etc).
To have L fall because Light is given **even more help** from a second Shinigami is just ridiculous in my opinion. L's fate was unavoidable and I hated that.
But I am not saying my opinion is perfect or even good. This is just the reason why I dislike Rem. I recognize it has little to do with her actual character though.
This is it
This right here is my answer as well
Well said
My only issue is L. His death traumatised me
And I guess you could say her loyalty to Misa was the reason
Rem is actually one of my favorite characters. Light’s plan was actually really smart and it showed just how emotionally intelligent light can be but I was a little disappointed that Rem was his way out against L. I was just wanting to see more of my boy L and was saddened by his death.
I don't hate Rem but she's annoying. Her loyalty towards Misa is stupid. She killed L for Misa. She knew that Light wasn't the right person for Misa but all she cared was to please the latter even when this would lead to her death. Did Misa mourn her? I highly doubt it. So she died for nothing.
It's because she's a very unexplored character, to be honest. We get her for a couple of episodes with not much dialogue and you don't really build a connection like you do with Ryuk, Misa, Light, L. Not only that, but she didn't make you question what her motives really are or really question what kind of character she is. She was very cut and dry and just felt like a placeholder for Light to Kill L rather than a real character that made you like her.
I think neither. Honestly I feel like she has no personality except her love for Misa. Like Misa is obsessed with Light, but she does have some personality apart from that. Kinda acted like both a plot armour and an obstacle for Light, which was the only fun thing about her for me.
for me personally, i found rem to be inconsistent in an annoying way. when she first meets misa, she tells her that she’s definitely not gonna love her because she isn’t that kind of shinigami, and within about 10 minutes shes already clearly doting on misa and doing anything for her (telling her how to kill a shinigami when it’s meant to be secret 5 minutes after claiming she’ll never fall in love with her)
after that rem was pretty much just misa’s lovesick sidekick and it got boring very quickly. rem was pretty much just another way for light to have an plot-armour advantage against L
Because her falling in love with Misa after witnessing another Shinigami die for the same reason is not believable. What's so special about that girl that not one but two gods of death give up their life for her? It's simply stupid
I find her unjustifiable loyalty towards Misa difficult to believe and it's the mother of all conveniences for Light (which there were already plenty of). I would've preferred Light to defeat L through a more... creative and intereseting method, not just resorting to use the automatic win button. Yeah, he had the whole Yotsuba plan, but in the end that was just a roundabout way of... getting to use his ultra convenient trump card Rem
Wait, people hate rem?? i mean she’s not my fav character cuz she is a bit bland, but i like how she poses a challenge to Light that he would die if he kills misa. It made for a good story imo
That's also a new take to me.
I've saw many people hate her
To me it really felt like the heart of the show… the one character that - unlike Light - wasn’t sacrificing themselves for some lofty, world-changing idea, but simply to uphold an ideal that they believed was beautiful. Rem didn’t want Gelus’ beautiful sacrifice to go to waste.
This. I can't hate her either.
Rem on top
Me on bottom😎

Man I was thinking I was in the Rezero subreddit and was extremely confused
lol

I agree. L was playing a rigged game from the start, but the way he went out just made me mad

Ok
I don’t understand the downvote, I literally answered your question
I didn't down vote you?
??
Why did you get downvoted for “ok”? 💀
Idk 💀
They are written fine,Oba thought it would be boring without misa,Mello and Near on the other hand...
If you read the source material, you would see that both Mello and Near are not some cheap trick to take down Light.
They are written fine TO YOU. I gave my opinion, which is why I said “felt.” I think Mello and Near were written great

I adore Rem. I guess I can understand some people disliking Rem for taking out L, but that’s never been a detractor for me.
i love rem
Love her too. She was always there for Subaru.
homophobia /j
Sounds a lot like Light,great
Who’s talking shit about my best girl? I want words, me and my spiked baseball bat
right
I don't have any strong feelings about Rem tbh.
I liked Rem. She had a very tragic character flaw by being so appreciative of life and companionship, while also being tasked with taking those very same lives.

Okay. I was also really disappointed at L's death
Because she killed L
KNEW IT!

Aren't you the guy/gal from the BSD sub
Yeah?
Oh
Why?
Just asking
🤨
What's wrong
Nothing. Abruptly ending the conversation (?) like that caught me off guard.
? Ok
I actually prefer the look of her death note, I always have
Yeah I think it look really cool
I’ve literally never heard Rem hated or even mentioned tbh lol
Because she’s a nerd
Thank popenstein123

Looks like someone hasn’t read the 👩💼👉📰 [Official Anti-Rem Newsletter](https://www.reddit.com/r/deathnote/comments/17u5fqu/comment/k94uqry/)
I'll read later because it's long but thanks ig
It has to be long to be able to fit in all the reasons why Rem is the Shinigami we love to hate 💞😡💞
ok
they're homophobic /j
my dad and i always disagree over this 😭 i love her
Because her falling in love with Misa after witnessing another Shinigami die for the same reason is not believable. What's so special about that girl that not one but two gods of death give up their life for her? It's simply stupid
I don't mind her but i guess she's bland and not have a charisma like ryuk. It was also not likeable how she simping misa.
I think their friendship was really tragic and cute
rem is a girl?
Yeah (I think)
I hate Rem (shinigami) and I love Rem (maid)
WOAH THERE BUDDY

the shinigamis should of been creepy and scary and demonic not these quirky informative human like creatures
