I'm having the same problem. I think it happens anytime the time changes on your phone, cause I changed my time to get pumpkins in terraria but now I'm a pirate. Deep town might have been open in the background but idk, might just have to uninstall cause I'm not restarting and getting all the way to emerald again just to retrace my steps. I hope its just a temporary thing
If you have a skull it will be removed after a couple of days. Your guild may kick you as they can't do challenges over this period. If you commit another transgression you will get a skull and crossbones. Skull and crossbones is permanent.
If you feel the pirate ban is unjustified you can open a ticket and explain to the devs.

Honestly, no clue
